PNP switch information for Volvo 850, S70, V70, 960, P80 cars. What's going on & how to deal with it

It is usually a cold weather problem. on the 86 and later you should carry a code reader to cancel the flashing arrow. Flashing arrow is limp mode and its 3rd gear. if you dive it home in third gear you will fry the clutch packs unless you are on a highway. really stupid volvo engineers decided to make limp Mode 3rd gear. way not 2nd? why not skip limp mode all together? the switch is on top of the transmission, not under the shifter like most cars. the battery tray and air box and some turbo piping has to come off. put it back same position shown by bolt head imprint. if from another car put trans in reverse and move the switch to where the reverse light come on.

I tried shifting rows and it didn't clear the flashing arrow. You believe I need to hook up the reader and clear the code before I drive it to the mechanic?

Start the car and let it warm up 10 min so the grease gets soft in the switch. then clear the code and shift to drive. if the blinking arrow stays off drive to the mechanic. If it comes back try shifting to neutral and do the same process that way if he problem is park or reverse you skip over that. either clean and repack your switch with dielectric grease of get a Volvo switch. do not use an aftermarket.@@rickkstir

hey, robert. big fan here. i have a 94 960, so i have been using the obd1 to pull diagnostic codes, but seeing you using that alongside the p-code reader now has me questioning because i didnt know those could be used on obd1 cars. or rather i didnt know they could store these codes! i'm interested now in getting one of these code readers. is it worth it?
