That part where little John is "Drowning" always cracks me up especially since his character basically got saved the same way in the Costner version of the film (except in rapids and not a puddle).

Cary Elwes was such a good pick for Robin Hood. He's perfect for the swashbuckling hero, but he know just how deliver lines to sound like he's taking everything 100% serious no matter how absurd the situation.

Yeah, but I do have one complaint with Cary Elwes being the lead in this movie. This movie already is so similar to "The Princess Bride" in look and tone, and with him as the lead, it muddies the waters even more.

This is actually more of a parody of Prince of Thieves. Specifically the line, "unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent. " Also, how the Shreif of Rottingham is dressed. The hangman plays the same role in Blazzing Saddles, You would like other Mel Brooks movies.

So in High School, we used to play a game with a comb like they do at the end of the fight with Robin and Little John. We added to it that if you got it, they got to drag the comb over your knuckles (it was called Bloody Knuckles and it can also be played with just fists or with a quarter). Scarlet O'Hara is the lead female character in Gone With the Wind. And now I got to the part where you mentioned Princess Bride - I should have waited til I watched the whole thing. I consider is role in Princess Bride as comedy - sorry about that. If you haven't seen The Godfather (or know anything about it), then it's hard to appreciate the lizard scene (with Dom DeLuise but I don't know if you know who that is). There is also a Dirty Harry reference in there. For a Mel Brooks musical, check out The Producers (both versions are good so poll your members on what they prefer (1967 or 2005) ). I think History of the World is also a musical but I might be wrong on that. For other non-sense with some musical numbers, you might like Monty Python as well - I'd start with Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Monty Python and The Meaning of Life. Another popular one is Life of Brian. Amy Yasbeck was married to John Ritter before his death. Yes, that is Sir Patrick Stewart to us.
@JayBondReacts
@JayBondReacts 2 жыл бұрын
Woah thanks for all the info! We used to play bloody knuckles with quarters, it was brutal sometimes. 😂 I want to watch more Monty Python for sure. The only one I can remember really is Meaning of Life and a few moments from Holy Grail, although I'm not certain I've seen the full movie rather just clips like the Black Knight and the coconut trotting.

This one i saw when it was released and I actually had a standing cutout of the poster with Hotshots part Deux on the otherside. Through Airplane, and the great Leslie Neilson i found Mel Brookes and any of his movies are great, also the Naked Gun Trilogy and top secret. The nice thing about all those movies is the rewatchability. Ive seen them all many many times and still find new jokes etc. And actuakky today you mentioned the life saver and i never caught it. Again thank you Jay for allowing me to reconnect to feelings of watching it for the first time when I was a child through a fresh pair of eyes. The only thing that does it better is when I can sit with my son and show him them for the first time. Keep being excellent my friend.

I'm ashamed to say this was the first Mel Brooks movie I ever saw. Fortunately, I saw Blazing Saddles and the Producers, but I still find this endlessly rewatchable because I grew up with it. Every kid I knew in '93 was singing "We're men" - even if they were girls. It's clearly not in the same league as some of Mel Brooks' best, but it's very nostalgic and very 90s. It has all the usual comedic tropes from that era and always cracks me up.
@Chasmodius
@Chasmodius 2 жыл бұрын
While I love this film a lot, I think it's one of Brooks' weaker entries, because it relies so much on topical humor and film references from the 90s, particularly the Kevin Costner Robin Hood. Those jokes are mildly amusing if you know the context, but it means that it hasn't really aged well.

Dave Chappelle was a nobody when this movie was made. But Mel Brooks saw him on "Star Search" and liked him, so Mel gave Dave a role in this movie. And obviously, that opened up a lot of opportunities for Dave. Listen to any interview where Dave has a chance to talk about his heroes, and he will talk about Mel Brooks like he was his own father. Dave LOVES Mel Brooks, and minces no words about his appreciation for Mel Brooks and how much he loves, appreciates, respects, and adores Mel Brooks. In fact, it's said in Hollywood that if you mention Mel Brooks around Dave Chappelle and give him a window to talk, he will not shut up about how much he love Mel Brooks.

I also didn't like the mock godfather scene at the middle and thought it was dragged out, being the kid that I was at the time I watched it I had no reference to Marlon Brando and I didn't know what a legend Dom Deluis was (the actor that played the mobster in thescene - and probably the reason it was not cut, even if it did drag a little.. ), so the whole cotton ball and lizard thing went right over my head... (Marlon Brando put cotton balls in his mouth for the audition for Don Corleone , and while filming the movie, he found a stray cat around the set that he then decided to incorporate into the scene, reportedly no one could get him to do anything he didn't want to, even back then, so Coppola just added the cat in..)
