CLIP DESCRIPTION:
RoboCop (Joel Kinnaman) aces a high-level training simulation.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A powerful multinational conglomerate attempts to bring robotic law enforcement to the United States by transforming a critically injured police officer into a cyborg cop in this remake of the subversive 1987 sci-fi classic. The year is 2028. For a long time, cutting-edge robotics company OmniCorp has been supplying the U.S. military with drones for use overseas, though their repeated attempts to bring the technology stateside has met with fierce resistance. When devoted family man and upstanding Detroit policeman Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is grievously wounded in the line of duty, OmniCorp CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) attempts to innovate by recruiting top scientist Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) to transform Murphy into a prototype half-man/half-robot crime-fighter. When initial tests fail to provide the results OmniCorp had hoped for, Norton reprograms Robocop to operate strictly on software rather than human emotion. Later, Robocop finally hits the streets, and the citizens of the crime-ridden city welcome him with open arms. But as Murphy's emotions begin to interfere with his programming, he sets out to find the criminals who nearly killed him, and ensure that justice is served. Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle Haley co-star.

That's actually a pretty good description of "Virtuoso Violence" - which occurs when someone is trained to the point where fighting is as natural and instinctive as any other highly practiced action. They will not hesitate to think, because they no longer have to do that. Broad tactical decisions they think about, but the actual actions that make up a fight are just instinctive. Hence, massive advantage over untrained people who do have to think.
@FireInNight27
@FireInNight27 4 жыл бұрын
Basically ultra instinct as Goku in DragonBall
@ocek2744
@ocek2744 4 жыл бұрын
It's not a straight up advantage though, as acting on instinct also makes you more likely to fall to things like feints, or make the wrong decision before you have time to consider it. Generally speaking though, acting faster is usually a much bigger advantage than thinking on it since most actions can be simplified down to the same response.
@sempermilites87
@sempermilites87 4 жыл бұрын
@@ocek2744 To me there are three levels for soldiers/warriors. In the beginning as a "recruit" they do not have the basic instincts yet to fight faster than other's who have seen combat. They have to think about what to do next. Hence they are a bit slower. The next stage is "seasoned." At this level their combat instincts have gotten incredibly faster to the point where they don't have to think on what to do, it just becomes automatic. This makes them more effective than recruits, but like you said they may start creating patterns in their actions and become predictable and open to feints. The final stage is the "veteran/elites." At this level they have combined their first and second stages to create a warrior that not only acts on their instincts, but has such an understanding of their surroundings and control over their thoughts that they can think fast on their feet to avoid possible traps or feints. They start understanding their actions that their combat instincts do and realize that they may start being predictable while in the middle of combat. Apologies for the huge essay. This whole quarantine has allowed myself to have some deep thoughts about many things in TV and movies.

@@sempermilites87 You go from being imprisoned by your mind, to "no mind", to "higher mind". From having to think about each action, to being able to "just do it" on auto-pilot, to being able to plan tactics (and small scale strategy) that change with the evolving battlefield. (You're no longer "just doing it", you're making sure what you are "just doing" gets you closer to your goal) I only got to "no mind" a couple times in the ring, but I've seen some of the "higher mind" type action watching certain types of soldier fight their way to an extraction zone. "It's the illusion of free will." That, right there, has to be one of the most chilling things I have ever heard in a movie. Murphy *thinks* he's in control, but in reality he has nothing to do with it, it's all just programming tell him what to do and when to do it, no decisions. In the own movies terms "he's just along for the ride".
@Asghaad
@Asghaad 3 жыл бұрын
thing is for that to work the system has to do what Murphy would do .... just faster its predicting the response he would make anyway, just processes it faster and acts faster but the end result is the same EXCEPT it can make those decisions faster and thus negates the only flaw the human element brings while keeping the reason they put the human brain in the machine. its actually a PERFECT solution because it makes the machine base its decisions on the mental template of Alex Murphy creating the perfect hybrid conscience.
@Someone-is4lx
@Someone-is4lx 2 жыл бұрын
@@Asghaad actually, what it does is the software takes action, and sends signals to the guy's head convincing him he is in control, so if the company decides to kill an innocent person, the guy will be taken accountable, because he believes he killed an innocent person because he thought he was in control
@Asghaad
@Asghaad 2 жыл бұрын
@@Someone-is4lx maybe you should watch the movie then ... halfway through he starts to override the directives and at the end he literally violates the base core directive he shouldnt be able to ... its the hole in the system because for it to work it has to simulate what Murphy would do to not cause it to glitch out... to convince him to believe that he is in control it has to behave as if he was ... its two way street, yes the system takes over BUT to be able to function it has to abide by the rules of the mind its "driving", meaning the longetr it has to learn the behavioral patterns of the host the closer it will emulate him and the less likely it is to act differently to the host. In the end what you would end up with would be AI copy of the host indistinguishable from the original, just acting way faster.

The movie are pretty solid on its own, like a modern take on RoboCop a few years in the future than the original movies timeline. The plot and character are pretty good and the action are improvement over the original, if only critics and fans stop looking at it like it supposed to recycle the plot and action beat per beat I would say it would be more successful and we will have more sequel. I mean who wouldn't want more RoboCop action movie with more modern cgi, it would be a blast.

I think it'd be a much better explanation if they said in a similar way to the original that the system aims and calculates all the movements and deals with that side of stuff while leaving Alex in control and simply allows him to bypass his hesitation. Letting him go from thought to action the way a robot can but the reasoning and deduction skills of a human.

after the man's whole explanation I just want to ask "then what is the difference between him and a machine???"
@felixfeliciano7011
@felixfeliciano7011 4 жыл бұрын
There is no difference. Murphy is a publicity stunt more than anything, in-universe. The doc did this to save the human in the machine from being scrapped, but he subsumed a man's free will to please a corporate overlord in order to do it. Out-of-universe, this is showing the chilling side of the illusion of free will. That a machine can be programmed to kill is not surprising to anyone, but doing it in such a way as to convince a human operator that he is the one that is making the decision is all the more sinister. In the original Robocop, we forget that Robocop is a robot that has a human brain as its processor. He is NOT Murphy. He only has Murphy's memories. Over the course of the movies, he slowly becomes more human with more free will. He even changes his name that he gives to the OCP CEO from "Call me Robocop" to "Call me Murphy." The second one does the opposite, where it is clearly a human in a full body prosthesis, but over the course of the film, they strip away more of his humanity in order to make him a more effective robot. He becomes Robocop.

If we're being honest, humans "act" without thinking all the time. Repetitive tasks we do day in and day out we just stop thinking about doing and just do, and in high stress situations humans will frequently act without thinking about what they're doing. The doctor was colorful in his wording, but what it breaks down to is he tuned the software in such a way that Murphy couldn't distinguish it apart from his own natural instincts.
