I always see hamster cages & bird cages in 2nd hand shops (good will) here in the UK. People think they're doing a good thing & helping a charity or helping someone who can't afford to buy new enclosures. They should donate old/used cages to rescue centres or remhoming centres.

i have a story- it's more like my dad's story though- so when my dad was a kid, he had friends that had a hamster, and those friends treated her like a literal toy. they would put her in a G.I joe truck or whatever and shove her down the stairs. their mom noticed that abuse, and she scolded her kids for that and decided to give the poor thing to my dad. he gave her a small cage, not sure exactly what size, but it was small, and his hamster had tons of tunnels and out-of-the-cage-time (mostly in a hamster ball, but it was in the 80s/90s so who can blame him?). my dad named her charlotte, after his grandma, and he loved that hamster. he would put her in his shirt pocket or on his shoulder and bring her to the store (he got kicked out lol) and he would feed her bits of pancake from his breakfast. and she lived for 4 years :) she was a syrian by the way!

I had that exact Habitrail!… well, three of them connected together, to be specific! They were an absolute pain to put together and take apart to clean though, haha. The joints were awful, and the cages were a pain to take apart for cleaning. The pans themselves were so shallow! The bedding would fall out everywhere! Haha.

Also I’m sad it didn’t have the wheel - wish you could’ve seen it! That wheel was so awful and unsafe - I never trusted it, never used it, and attached an external wheel instead.

I have two robos ( sisters ) were fine until I found blood on their bedding I separated them and was going to take one of them to their original home then I couldn’t do it and my mum agreed to get me two cages they occasionally see each other and watch the other one but haven’t tried to get to each other yet they are much happier apart and am sooooo glad I saw that blood so nothing worse could have happened

There is a petstore in sweden named ”arken zoo” and they say that dwarf hamster NEED too be ceept 2 and they basicly said that you should look into getting one syrian hamster if ypu dont want two dwarf hamsters like... that so un true!!!

Kinda bummed. i got my robo from the pet store (ik but theres almost noone breeding around where I live) but she had one litter mate with her kind of wish I took both of them. My pet store only takes in female hamsters they almost never get in any males. I have two robos now. Each in their own 40 gallon breeder tanks ❤️ love them so much

When I first got my Syrian, I did get an exercise ball and used it once before finding out that they’re not good. Since, the only thing I’ve used it for is transport from the enclosure to the tub for bath time bonding :)

Hey, Mucjhie, have you ever housed a Chinese hamster? They are so active. Mine is in a 50 gallon bin with tons. of enrichment. I had to move her to a 8.5 inch wheel because she kept flying out of the 6.5. She was landing badly. Bad angles all bent up. Craigslist rescue.

Maybe 30 (maybe more) years ago, I had one of those space station cages. I had no idea it was too small. I was just delighted it had bars, since I thought that all-plastic Habitrails didn't have enough ventilation with all those tubes. I haven't had a pet in ages, but I finally got a hamster through the SPCA. She started out in a Walmart cage, but will soon be moving to a Preview 528. I threw out the old space station cage, but had another one in storage for decades. I gave it to the SPCA with the warning that it was small, and the plastic was possibly brittle, but they would be better able than me to judge whether it could be used for mice.

Argh, I dont get these cages and mentality of parents. I was an animal lover and wanted all of them, from a very young age I did get them (or so I thought) in fact my mother took care of them and let me help cleaning the cages if I wanted to. I did play with them a lot, I read up on all the animals I got and realy invested in them. I saved up my allowance to take them to the vet (understanding now that my parents paid most of those bills cause my allowence was not enough) I called the vet and I was the one taking them in (under guidance of my mother) she loved animals as well and she learned me from the age of 2 (yes 2) to take care of an animal and the responsibility it took. Yes my age was taken in account but even real small kids can take small amounts of responsibility when guided correctly. I am now 40 and still an animal lover, I thank my parents for letting me explore all the wonderfull creatures at a young age. I pitty the kids who learn this is the way to take care of animals...

Oxbow's young rat food is also not the best but they make the mark with the adult rat food. You can feed young rats the adult food if you supplement protein needs. But I like making my own rat food though.

I had two gerbils but the first one died .... and his name was kibbles and he was super cute! And my parents got him for me and then the next gerbil I got was named midnight and he was cute also! I mean going cheap isn’t horrible for all animals (like of course you can save money buy making a diy bin cage, like shredded napkin/tissues as some of the bedding, making homemade hides or toys, that part mainly for mice like homemade hammocks) but 8 bucks for a hamster cage? They probably spent more buying the actual animal then they spent buying the cage

This really makes me sad but things happen I get it I am really grateful to have the man that I have because my boyfriend is extremely allergic to hamsters and mice and I have both I have three hamsters and three separate cages of mice all hamsters are caged separately they're all females and he's severely allergic and will never make me get rid of them because he knows what they do for me on a mental level for my soul just from my life I look forward to them waking up when they decide to wake up my hamsters are happy my mice are happy so we're happy

My daughters first hamster died after 13 days we got it from petsmart so we had to return the body as per the 14 day return policy or whatever they call it, and when we did return it they told us it wasn’t our fault that she died, because a few of the other ones were returned dead as well..... great....

As far as i know it should be okay. The hay is hamster safe but most hamsters i know dont like it. If you are still worried you could put some paper towels instead of the hay since its like bedding in a way

Have you tried Taming? If not then that is the best place to start! Victoria Rachel has an awesome video on it! If you have tried taming, maybe your hamster needs more time to get used to you. Hope this helped :)

I tell everyone buy your kid whatever small animal you want...with the understanding it will be your pet not the kids. You cant trust kids to maintain proper husbandry even very responsible ones.

I don’t about the exercise ball. It seems like a good idea for first time owner and getting a hamster exercise. Too me as long as you watch them the whole time. My cancer the second time when I use the shower play pen and gave him water it seems like he freaks out more in the playpen been in the ball. I have a debate with Victoria on this issue she kept insisting that I was forcing him into a small enclosure which was not true and I kept telling her I put the ball down in the enclosure and allow him the opportunity to go into it on his own time if he didn’t it was not his time to play in the bar if he immediately ran into the bar and look like he wanted to run around OK. I did have a bad playpen experience with my new hamster Pikachu I wanted to play with him a little extra so I put his water dish in the playpen along with him but he decided to play in his water dish not drink from it I freaked out because he got wet.

I think the exercise ball could be definitely re-engineered into something a lot better so like when they hit the wall there is a very light spring to allow them to continue to run when they hit the wall and they have a mechanism in the spring to and spring it when they decide to try to entrap themselves

People get bad impressions from rescues based off of non hamster based rescues such as the "humane society ". I got my hamster out of a tiny tails cage with several other syrian hamsters from there where the staff were telling me Horrible information. I was like wtf this is the humane society
