The difference between this and the lack less new series and the original run is really clear here. The energy from Craig Charles, quicker interviews and intense background music really keep the tempo of the show up all the way through. The new improved robots of S8-S10 plus the presentation of the older series would’ve been a great combination.

The first episode we get a full glimpse of JP's dementia setting in. Diotior got to the semi-finals of the First World Championship, they didn't go out first round, and Firestorm and Tornado were never in it! No mention of the return of Philliper from the promising Depoppasaurus Rex team either. What could have been! Panzer out-tornadoed Tornado, a feat not to be redone until Storm 2. As for Drillzilla, it's a robot I rather like, but it's understandable there's ambivalent feelings to it - it was our equivalent of Son of Whyachi, before people realised Shufflebots were a cheesy way to stuff armour and weaponry into a lower weight class. But hell, it was legal at the time, I'm not losing any sleep over it. Good win from Razer - normally I'm not particularly positive towards them, but that was fully deserved. Excellent control and style, when they realised they didn't have the ability to crush through that armour. Fascinating though that in 10 years, it went from needing a robot bending the rules to be twice the weight limit for twice the armour to be able to resist a crusher like that, and yet in S8, Kill-e-Crank-e managed to stand up to it. Hydraulics really did have their day, and today is not it.

@rickyspanish78517 жыл бұрын
Jonathan yeah it doesnt look like a walking robot
@Aasha7 жыл бұрын
Drillzilla only got as far as it did because it found a loophole. If technically classified as a walker the robot used to be permitted to enter the tournament with a higher weight limit. This allowed it better motors and armor than other robots had of the same weight class. But that weight limit was intended to be there to compensate for the lower speed and maneuverability REAL walker robots lack. Quoted from the Robot Wars wiki: -------------- Drillzilla was somewhat unpopular in the pits due to its shufflebot design, which many thought to be bending the rules as the design gave it the weight advantage of a walkerbot but much better speed and pushing power than regular walkers usually enjoy. "I did dislike 'Drillzilla' (AKA 'The Ugly Vibrating Brick'), but not because they beat us. I was convinced - correctly, I think - that their shufflebot design was not good for the sport. The rulemakers agreed..." - Aaron Joerger Shortly after Extreme Warriors was filmed, an amendment that affected Drillzilla was made to the walkerbot rules. It stated that a robot using a camshaft to "shuffle" as a means of locomotion no longer constituted walking. Shufflebots like Drillzilla were now limited to one-and-half times the normal weight limit.

Whats very interesting here is that Jonathan Pearce accidentally gives spoilers out... See he announces incorrect statistics about some robots, for instance that Firestorm and Tornado competed in the previous world championship and that Diotoir, Chaos 2 and Firestorm lost in the first round whilst Tornado was beaten in the Semis by Razer. All incorrect... for the first world championship. See the commentary is done post battle, it isn't live. The notes he has are actually about THIS world championship. Oops John, you just revealed the results. On another note the 4 British entrants were the All Stars Semi Finalists, must have been how they decided it. And looking at the damage to Firestorm it appears to have been filmed post Series 5. Also the weight differences of all the bots is comical, what a mess.

_Lowers his head in shame._ Whirlpool 70, just how did it manage to qualify.
@oliverprice1145 жыл бұрын
1) The producers had limited options as to the robots they could include from other countries. Although Robot Wars was being shown around the world at the time, many countries, such as Italy, had only just started building robots. 2) Robots aren't just picked because they are strong fighters. The producers were also looking for robots with unusual designs, and/or robots that made good cannon fodder. Examples of this include Grannie's Revenge and The Tartan Terror. W70 looked unusual, and was unique in that it was built from a pool cleaner.

After the garbage tier entries like 'Ghettobot' in the first world championship I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the American teams in this video. So the Revolutionist is the original ancestor of Captain Shrederator? Shame they hesitated, really. If they'd had the sense to start spinning as soon as activate was called, they might have been able to fend off Razer (the teeth may be small, but at 180mph max tip speed this was by far the fastest spinner in original RW)
@MsSomeonenew7 жыл бұрын
Well people forget that all the armor on Razer is upfront and they spin on a dime, they would not take much damage from those early spinners.
@psychicscubadiver6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that slow spin up time is what killed them. The fact that Razer went immediately for them and didn't let up until they were out was enough to show that the Revolutionist was the only bot they even considered a threat. Not that that was a particularly difficult feat in that heat.

Honestly, I wish in hindsight that Razer didn't return. I was initially excited to see it back and was shocked to see it embarrassingly fall out of the competition in the first televised Robot Wars battle in over 12 years, but what chance would it have had against Carbide? Sure, Razer had an anti-spinner wedge, but I doubt even that would've been enough to prevent being violently chopped apart and getting scrapped. Look at Ian Lewis' reaction to what damage Pussycat inflicted on Razer - how do you think he would've dealt with what Carbide would've most likely done? It's not like Razer would've been able to cause much damage anymore anyway, with the standards of armour and construction by 2016.

Really not sure I can agree with you there, especially towards the end it looked like it was all DZ. They were more aggressive, though I reckon Graham Bone out did them on driving skill. Yes, Firestorm got the KO on the other two machines but by that measure, Philliper should have won the fourth melee - it was the one to kill Panzer, who would have dominated Tornado if it was one-on-one.
@ryanodonovan9497Ай бұрын
Looking back at it, I don't even agree with Firestorm being one of the UK representatives in this, as great as the robot is. Look at the others; obviously Razer was going to be a UK representative as the reigning World Champion, and so was Chaos 2 as the reigning UK Champion. And Tornado made sense being that it was a rising star as the previous winner of the Best Newcomer Award, and especially with how dominant it was with the two Challenge Belts in Extreme. But what did Firestorm accomplish prior to match up with that? I would've had Pussycat in its place, since Pussycat had won the Celebrity Championship in Series 4, the War of Independence in Extreme Warriors Series 1 (additionally when all other UK robots lost in the first round to the Americans), the Tag Team Championship with Díotóir and one of the Annihilators in Extreme, and was the one robot to decisively _beat_ Razer by this point. Then again, it doesn't look that bad considering that Firestorm beat _Pussycat_ when facing it one on one in Series 5.
