If I may, I would like to point out that an arch with a unit TDC (top dead center) is a male arch and an arch with the joint TDC is a female arch. Also a common alternative term for “axed” would be “gauged”. Excellent informative video Rob, well done.

Martin How involved are you in masonry? Or are you just poking your head in to make snide remarks?

Martin While it’s true I received my journeyman certification in Canada my instructor was a third generation mason from England. How would you label the two types of arches in simplest terms?

Martin Full disclosure: My experiences as a mason also include working as senior instructor at a masonry training facility so I am well familiar with arch construction, types and classifications. Arches with a key “unit” are by far the most common, in other words arches with an odd number of vousoirs. But some arches have an even number of voisours, in other words instead of a “key” you would have a joint at top dead center. There are terms or labels for those …male or female respectively. These terms were introduced to me as an apprentice by a 3rd generation mason from England and I’m surprised this is new to you if you are indeed involved in the finer details of masonry. I was just curious how you denote the difference…perhaps odd or even? Or maybe it’s never crossed your path. 🙂
