Legendary, trail blazing and one kick ass rocker. Every female rocker owes her a debt of gratitude. Talent and beauty and one big pair of balls, to be able to stand tall in a then male dominated industry took strength and determination, she had it all.. She deserves her spot in the R&R hall of fame!

@@mlhesler68 Suzi came out in 1964, Fanny in 1969 and the Runaways in 1975. Suzi came before the others. She may not have had as much main stream success as the others until she did her thing on Happy Days, but she certainly blazed that trail for female rockers. Before her (by months maybe) was Goldie and the Gingerbreads. In the fifties there were females who rocked out like the lighter rock bands of their day. But Suzi was the first to really rock out in that raunchy rock way letting the boys know she wasn't scared to play hard like they did.

@@surlechapeau I'm a female guitarist. I tend to really deep dive research this sort of thing. These women are the role models I look to in my pursuit to be a better musician. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of guys I look up to as well, but there is something about the history of women in rock that makes me feel a little more validated as a musician. It's as if these women gave me the permission, the right to play in the boy's club fearlessly.

Although Suzi is American her sound is very much part of the British Glam rock sound as she moved to the UK in 1971 and worked with British record producer Micky Most. Glam Rock was amazing and included bands like T.Rex, Slade, The Sweet, David Bowie, Mud, Mott The Hoople and Alvin Stardust, you have reacted to T.Rex (Bang a Gong) and Sweet (Ballroom Blitz) but some of the others especially Slade are well worth checking out too.

Quatro was from the US but only had major success outside the US, so she based herself in the UK She only had one #1 in the US and that was a duet (with Chris Norman of the band "Smokie") A lot of her hits, like Can the Can were written by an Australian Mike Chapman (but credited to Mike Chapman, Nicky Chinn (Chinn did the business side of the partnership)) Later Chapman wrote either solo, or with other people and he also produced albums such as Blondie's breakthrough album "Parallel Lines" Champman's other hits for Quatro were "48 Crash", "Devil Gate Drive", and he wrote the duet (I mentioned above) "Stumblin In"

She provided some of the glam rock's era most infectious hits- "48 Crash", "Devil Gate Drive", "Shine My Machine", "Official Suburbian (yes, that's how they spelled it) Superman", "Glycerine Queen", her covers of "I Wanna Be Your Man" by The Beatles and "Shakin' All Over" by Johnny Kidd. I fell in love with Suzu Quatro when I was about 10. I had never heard her music, but she played the roll of Leather Tuscadaro, in Happy Days. The only other person on the show who was as cool as The Fonz! She had 7 appearances on the classic sitcom, and was even offered her own spinoff show by Gary Marshall, the producer. She turned it down because she didn't want to be typecast and wanted to concentrate on her music career.

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Yes. At the time Suzi's first album came out in 1973, I frankly still didn't know about Carole. At the time, it was a big deal for a woman to play even an electric guitar, much less a bass. It was deemed "unladylike," though acoustic guitar was OK. Looking back on it, it was a pretty weird idea.

I've been waiting a long time for this! Suzi set the standard for the others to follow. She was born and raised in Detroit and ironically, was never a major rock star here in the US, but was huge all over the world. Funny you say she reminds you a bit of Janis because they tried to make her the new Janis after Janis passed, but it did not work out, so they just Suzi be Suzi. The one thing I'm surprised you did not pick up on is that Suzi is the BASS player here! Her (now ex) husband is the lead guitarist. I highly recommend Devil Gate Drive and the only hit she had in the US, "Stumblin' In", a pop duet with singer Chris Norman. Also, there are compilation videos of her when she appeared on the 1970s sitcom, "Happy Days" as Leather Tuscadero. Suzi has moved on to TV, Film and theater over the years, playing the lead in Annie Get Your Gun on the London stage, as well as Tallulah Bankhead, which she wrote and produced. There is a great documentary on her from 2019 called "Suzi Q" that I recommend anyone see. If you have a library card, see if your library has the streaming video service called "Kanopy" because it is on here for free. You won't regret it. Suzi is still going strong at 71, putting out new music.

I think it's down to Radio Stations in the US being so Genre specific. I mean, I like most music (except Gutter Rap) so if mainly I'm into Reggae it's unlikely I'll hear a Status Quo or Slade song on the channel I'm tuned into. A lot of Americans are quite shocked when they learn that Quiet Riot basically copied Slade note for note. (I'm sure Noddy & Lea don't mind as they get Royalties) and actually prefer Slades original version. It's nigh on unbelievable they've only heard 🅾🅽🅴 Status Quo song (Pictures of Matchstick Men) - Their minds will probably blow a fuse if they youtubed Quo at Wacken. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2bVc42nrK6noqc

When she was coming up in the music world, the record business didn't know what to do with a female rocker, and he record company really screwed things up. Her real rocker persona was kind of undermined by two things: (1) being on Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero didn't help her with fans of the much harder rock she actually played in live concerts, and (2) the record company softened her image, assuming that the public didn't want a badass rocker babe rock star. My absolute favorite song of hers is actually a duet she did with Chris Norman called Stumblin' In. It's not her usual song, but it's a great listen. The two of them together had a wonderful chemistry together. Another song you really need to hear is Cat Size. Weird title because it sounds like it should be Cat's Eye, but Suzi was playing with words a bit when she wrote the song. It's a great ballad, though, that really shows off her voice. Suzi Quatro was huge in the British Isles in the early 70`s . I grew up in Ireland and she was massive and every song she released went to the top of the charts. She was tiny and usually dressed in a black leather jumpsuit and always pumping energy at 200% . Although she is American I think she was more popular on the other side of the Atlantic. A true 70`s icon.

YAY! Finally - Suzi Quatro!!! Y'all have hit it out of the park with your fierce femles this Friday! I LOVE Suzi Quatro! Was first introduced to her when she played Leather Tuscadero on "Happy Days" & then got into her music. She is the godmother of grrrl punk (imho). Some of her other songs I suggest y'all check out include "Stumblin' In" (a little softer than this one), "The Wild One", "Lipstick", "Rolling Stone", "Roxy Roller", "Devil Gate Drive", "Heart of Stone", "If You Can't Give Me Love", "Rock Hard"...there's just too many to choose from! She is PHENOMENAL!!!

Man….fell deep in love with her after seeing a live performance on one of those late night rock concert shows back n the early ‘70s. I’m thinking it was Don Kirshner’s show. She was absolutely electrifying! Here was this tiny, beautiful little fierce woman, sexy as all hell in a tight jumpsuit, just completely bringing it…I was probably 13 at the time, and I just flipped! Amazing!

Suzi was originally from Detroit but moved to England in the early 70's and became a big star there. The only hit she had in the US was the uncharacteristically laid-back duet with Chris Norman of the band Smokie called "Stumblin' In". She played in one of the first all-female Rock bands with her sisters called Suzi Soul and The Pleasure Seekers in Detroit. Her brother Mike was a DJ in Detroit. One of her sisters was in the band Fanny. I first saw her on the 70's TV show set in the 50's "Happy Days".

Suzi was NOT, in fact, "the start" or "the first" (as influential & impactful as she was!). The first all female band ever signed (there had been plenty of female vocalists and musicians before this, in most areas of popular music (Blues, Country, Jazz,...)👍👍) was, in fact, an outfit called: Goldie & The Gingerbreads (this was in 1962 or 1963). Goldie & The Gingerbreads was (of course) fronted by "Goldie" which was the nickname her mother chose for the Polish girl who had emigrated to the States after the War (that would be: WW II, fer you young'ins!😛👍👍🤪). She would, later, be known as: Genya Ravan (and if I remember correctly, her birth name is: Genyusha Zelkovicz (🤷)) ...so: known as Goldie Zelkovicz in Goldie & The Gingerbreads. Later using a "colloquial truncation" of her given name, to become: Genya Ravan, lead vocalist of Ten Wheel Drive and (arguably: "MOST" famously:) Producer of the DEAD BOYS debut album: Young, Loud & Snotty [legendary in its own right!]. Goldie & The Gingerbreads (besides Genya Ravan), also featured the underground-legendary guitarist/vocalist/song-writer: Carol MacDonald (she was the guitarist in Goldie & The Gingerbreads). Carol MacDonald (along with: Ginger Bianco (Panobianco)-the other founding member of Goldie & The Gingerbreads and the person to whom "Gingerbreads" alludes. 👍👍. Ginger is a drummer.) would, later, form the all-female funk-rock band: ISIS (The cover photo is the entire band, nude, covered in silver body paint! EXTREMELY salacious & boundary pushing, in the early '70s!!!!🤯😳). So: Goldie & The Gingerbreads, Ten Wheel Drive, Isis [1970s] all need your attention (especially if you are investigating "the history of female rockers"!)! I, also, would steer you towards the British band: Fanny ! [an UNBELIEVABLY rude name, for a female (or ANY!) artists, particularly in that time-frame! (If you know/understand British slang at all!) [Basically: It would have been the same as a U.S. band calling themselves: Pussy!] ...anyhow: All worth your time. There are MANY, MANY female artists whom you haven't even breathed in the direction of, yet! ...Arguably, some of the most important: The Runaways [the band which founded Lita Ford and Joan Jett's careers! (where they got their start!); Girlschool (all-girl '80s British Heavy Metal - They split an E.P. with MOTÖRHEAD, which is pretty legendary!🤘🤘 [MOTÖRHEAD!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🌩️]) and: UNBELIEVABLY!!!!!, you have YET to hear: HEART?????! _The Wilson Sisters are as responsible as ANYONE for the Seattle rock scene and have been cranking out SUPERB music since the 1970s! [3 different bands, really: the original with: Ann, Nancy, Michael DeRosier, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Howard Leese (then an "additional member"&multi-instrumentalist); the '80s version (with Howard Leese as the lead guitarist, Denny Carmassi (ex-Montrose !

ooh, was Suzi and her sisters' group playing before Goldie (not that Suzy was signed as such)? There was a smattering of female jazz players from the 1920s onwards, though most would concentrate on the Piano in different styles. For strong vocals I suppose Brenda Lee came over the strongest

Glad to see that you're finally getting into Suzi Q. She first hit the charts with this song at the height of Glam rock and followed it up with a number of other glam tunes like "Devil Gate Drive" and " You're Mama Won't Like Me" all penned by the hit making duo of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Later her sound would mellow a little and she'd record the classic rock ballads like "Stumblin' In" and my own favourite "The Race Is On". She also found time to appear as Leather Tuscadaro on "Happy Days" and, later, on the London stage as Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun". Suzi is ( she still appears occasionally e.g. Midsomer Murders) a very talented musician and actress.
