The best thing about Sweet was that they never took themselves remotely seriously, which was quite a rarity in early 70s rock ! One of them (Andy Scott probably) said " Bowie was an alien rock star, Bolan was a a magic pixie...we just looked like construction workers in drag " which pretty much sums it up. Good time, party band. No frills, no pretensions, platform boots. Can't knock it. I'll wait patiently for Teenage Rampage...

Their later material was much heavier than their earlier stuff. Several people have already mentioned "Love is Like Oxygen", "Hellraiser", "Fox on the Run", and "Teenage Rampage", but a couple heavy tunes to add to the list include "No You Don't", "Action", and "Cockroach". They are grossly underrated

I just watched your reaction to Wig Wam Bam and you asked for info about Sweet. You got it. The group is well named because these were probably the sweetest four guys you could ever meet. They deserved better than they got. Of the four members only Andy Scott, the guitarist, is still alive. The first to go was Brian Connolly. He was jumped in the street by three guys because he had been flirting with one of their girlfriends. The last blow was a kick to the throat. The thug said "that ought to do it". They were about to tour America with the Who but had to cancel. It was six months before some of Brian's voice came back. He never really recovered. With his body torn up by alcohol he began having heart attacks. I've heard as many as nine a day or as many as 13 a day. Then the shakes started. I heard a promotor talking about putting a Sweet reunion together. He met the plane and saw all but Brian coming off the planes. They told him Brian was coming. The last person off the plane was Brian. He was only a shadow of himself, a bent-over little old man with the shakes walking with a cane. And his voice was gone. There was no reunion. Brian spent his last years living a what they call a council flat (small apartment paid for by the gov't) and died in 1997 aged 51. Mick Tucker was next. He had everything - worldwide success with the band, and he married his high school sweetheart. The she was killed in a car crash and he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Even a bone marrow transplant from his brother didn't help. Mick died in 2002 at 54. After the band split up Steve Priest has moved to L.A. He died in 2020 at 72.

"Fox on the run" is the next song!!! Mick Tucker was the best glam rock drummer, Andy Scott (the guitarist) wrote a lot of great songs and was a producer, Steve Priest (the bassist) was an innovator and also a good songwriter, Brian Connelly... You just have to listen to him to know what a good singer he was. The unknown member is Mike Chapman, who wrote many of their hits but didn't play concerts.

The Sweet started out as a bubblegum glam rock band and during this initial phase they had a number of hits in the UK and Europe. Some of these included Poppa Joe, Block Buster, Hellraiser, Alexander Graham Bell, Teenage Rampage, Little Willy and Wig-wam Bam. At this time many of the band's biggest hits had been written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman who also were serving as the band's management team. But by 1973/1974 the band were growing tired of the bubblegum direction and glam rock image pushed by Chinn/Chapman, and so they decided to head into a more hard rock oriented direction with the band writing their own material--and also shortening the group's name from The Sweet to just Sweet. This is when the group started having more success in the U.S. Ballroom Blitz, Fox On The Run, Action and Love Is Like Oxygen got significant airplay both on commercial top 40 and album oriented rock stations. Sweet's success started to fade in the late 70s, and original singer Brian Connelly left the group.

This was written by Chin and Chapman. Chapman went on to produce Blondie. They also wrote stuff for Suzie Quatro and loads of other Glam Rock bands in the early 70's in Britain. But after getting stick for not writing their on songs they had a very big hit with one they wrote in 1977 or 8 called Love is like oxygen which is very good and proved they could write their own songs.

Although the band is lip synching to a pre-recorded track, the sound of the audience stomping on the floor in time with the beat can easily be heard during the verses. Positioning the drummer at the front of the band was quite common for many bands in the 70’s.

Sweet was my favourite band in high school during the mid to late 70s. Ballroom Blitz and Fox On The Run were their biggest hits in North America, and other great songs include No You Don't (which Pat Benatar covered), Sweet FA, Action, The Lies In Your Eyes, Fever Of Love, Laura Lee, Block Buster and a few zillion others. They were known for purposely being outrageous - they used to open their live shows by projecting porn flicks on a screen while The Stripper by David Rose blared in the background.

Please, please do "Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheep, Cheep" by "Middle of the Road" - it'll make you smile. Your children would love it too.

Everyone suggests "Love Is Like Oxygen", and it is good but the full length version may be a bit long for you two to really enjoy. You should check out the songs "AC/DC", ""Poppa Joe", "Action", "Hell Raiser", "Teenage Rampage", and "Co-Co". I think these songs would be more up your alley. I've been a Hugh Sweet fan for a very long time. Amber needs to listen to "Ballroom Blitz" also since Jay did it solo.

I have heard it and I still have the LP. I like the song I just think they might get a little bored with the full version. Like I said, I'm a huge Sweet fan and have been forever.@@IZZY_EDIBLE

If you love 70s British glam rock, you've got to listen to Slade and also Wizzard at Christmas time. British classics, that still reach the top 20 every Christmas

Guys great reaction. One of my faves from the UK 1970s. There were a few huge bands in that era including Sweet - others were T.Rex (who I think you've reacted to twice, 'Get It On (Bang A Gong)' and 'Hot Love' but there's lots more hits); and Slade, who were the biggest selling band of the 1970s in the UK. They had 6 consecutive no.1s, a feat that wasn't repeated until the late 1990s, by Take That - and you had to sell a lot more to get a no.1 in the '70s!

Oh geez!! Haven't heard this song for at least 30 years! Reminds me of when we used to go to the youth club. This song and the Superman song had everyone on the dance floor. Even those of us who hated dancing LOL

😆European “Glam bands” always crack me up. This was a British band, but some of the other European countries had some crazy stuff in the 70’s and 80’s.

Please do 'I believe in a thing called love' by The Darkness. It is very camp and has a very 70's feel. The music video is crazy and lead singer Justin Hawkins' voice is amazing; Jay will love his high notes.

One more comment! In the earlier part of their career, Sweet dressed glam, but their hits were written for them by the successful songwriting team Chinn & Chapman. These were known as Sweet's 'bubblegum' hits: 'Wig Wam Bam', 'Little Willy', 'Blockbuster', 'Poppa Joe', 'Funny Funny', 'Co-Co', 'Hell Raiser', 'Teenage Rampage', 'The Sixteens'. But Sweet were a hard rock band influenced by the likes of Deep Purple. They wanted to be known for their heavier sound rather than the bubblegum. They wrote their own songs which were heavier, and appeared on many of the B-sides of their Chinn-Chapman A-side hits. After a while they left the CC team to write all their own songs which are great hard rockers, some also hits. Try any of: 'Action', No You Don't', 'Done Me Wrong All Right', 'Set Me Free', 'Cockroach', 'Love Is Like Oxygen'. You already did (I think) 'Fox On The Run' (the album version doesn't have the keyboards of the hit version, it's all guitar, so is a bit heavier) Like most Sweet fans I love both styles/periods, it's all great, bubblegum for the lighter fun and the heavier stuff is more serious while still being catchy. Having said that, 'Blockbuster' and 'Hell Raiser' rock out pretty well!

Sweet were borderline bubblegum sometimes, but they always rocked, which was their saving grace. I sometimes wonder what Native Americans though of this song.

So funny I saw rush, the sweet and Uriah Heep at alpine valley. The powers that be took off Heep because people were still trying to get their seat. The sweet had to elongate their sets. playing little Wiley, ballroom blitz twice. The crowd was yelling HEEP HEEP and the sweet said yea Sweet.

Drummers were pretty much always out front once up a time. Amber really should react to Ballroom Blitz if she has not heard it. That song still gets the ladies up. Set Me Free is a great rocker by these guys.

I was the perfect age to get into this and Little Willy when they came out and then be blown away as a teen when Desolation Boulevard came out a few years later. Everything off that album rocks. My favorite song of theirs is Action off the next album, Give Us A Wink. They changed their sound again for Off The Record and Level Headed. Listen to Fever Of Love and California Nights, then finish it off with the full length 6:49 album version of Love Is Like Oxygen.
