"Taking it to the Streets" was a favorite of mine from the Doobs as well. Tons of great songs from this band. Whether it be Tommy Johnston or Michael McDonald on lead vocals, plenty to choose from. "Long Train Runnin' " is another favorite of mine.

The Doobie Brothers basically had two eras as a group, the Tom Johnston era (more Rock n Roll flavor) then the Michael McDonald era (more bluesy, piano infused with a pinch of soulful R&B) some people prefer the Johnston years, some the McDonald years (McDonald took over lead vocals in the mid 70’s because Johnston began having medical issues) I like both personally but acknowledge they both have completely different styles.

This was a great reaction to the big change in the Doobies. It was without Michael McDonald shortly before this (the first album he was totally featured on, was TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS), and then with him. And then he left again. And these days, I think it’s both versions together: the best of both worlds.

Just like Chicago went into a different direction so did the Doobie Brothers with the edition of Michael McDonald in 1976. They went from rockin' into blue -eyed soul for a couple of albums before Michael McDonald went solo and the Doobie Brothers disbanded in 1981. Tom Johnston, the previous lead singer, had left before this record due to illness (1978?) but returned when the Doobie Brothers reunited in 1989. Checkout "The Doctor" from that time. Thanks.😎

Tom Johnston became ill in 1975, while the band was on tour, promoting their "Stampede" album. They needed a singer to fill in for Tom and finish out the tour. Band member, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, recommended Michael McDonald, who he had played with in the band, Steely Dan. Michael agreed to join the band, and he was invited to work on their 1976 album, which became "Takin' It to the Streets." Tom's input on the album was limited to just a couple of tracks, due to his illness. When Tom fully recovered, he joined the Doobies on their 1976 tour. When the band began working on their 1977 album, "Livin' on the Fault Line," Tom could see that the band was going in a different direction musically and felt that the songs he had written/recorded didn't fit in with the direction of the album, so he left the band early in the recording sessions. Tom was still listed as a member of the band on the album art, despite not having performed on any of the tracks.

The sappy years. The early years were the best. I was attending a community meeting in Middle Tennessee many years ago. When I entered the room there not many empty seats but I found one and as I approached I thought that man looked very familiar. Just as I sat sat down the man reached out to shake my hand and introduced himself, “Hi. I’m Michael”. OH! That’s why he looked familiar. Immediately after, I walked across the street to my favorite lunch cafe. As I entered one of McDonald’s more notable songs was playing but the title slipped my mind. So, I asked the server (she claims to be his #1 fan) to remind me the name of the song. She said, “I keep forgetting”. I said, “Me too. That’s why I’m asking you.” She looked puzzled and repeated, “I Keep Forgetting”. I replied, “Well, it will come to me later.” She practically yelled at me…”I KEEP FORGETTING is the name of the song!’” We were having our own little Abbot&Costello moment before I finally caught on.

As a longtime fan of The Doobie Brothers and even though my favorite Doobie Brothers song is What A Fool Believes I’d have to say my remaining nine songs that would compile my top ten from them would all be prior to Michael McDonald joining them. This particular song would be just outside of my top ten list. I graduated from HS in 1973 which is the year Captain And Me came out, I believe. The early Doobies were a vital aspect of such profoundly fun and important years of my life and for that that version of the band is my favorite. They had such a vibe with that early sound.

As I remember...Michael McDonald was known as a "fixer" behind the scenes. Producers would call on him to add his special touch on Keyboards...Songwriting...Vocal arrangements...and his own unique incredible voice. The Doobies main writer and vocalist Tom Johnston left the band over some personal problems with the notion he may return may not. Their manager hired McDonald to keep the band alive. He became a member of Steely Dan along with Skunk Baxter his guitar equivalent in the studio. And I believe they both went over to Doobies from there after Tom Johnston left. He went solo from there though he still works with both bands.
@doncrimmin9 ай бұрын
Skunk was playing as a "studio" musician on the early albums before he became a full time member of the band. If you have one of those early albums like "Stampede" or "Vices", you'll find some well known artists who were recruited by producer Ted Templeman to play on the albums like Ry Cooder who played bottle neck guitar on "Rainy Day Crossroad Blues". Billy Payne from Little Feat played keyboards on those albums before Michael joined the band. Billy was touring with them until Michael rejoined the band for their 50th Anniversary tour. Little Feat and the Doobies were all over each other's albums. Look for Little Feat's "Red Streamliner". Both Michael and Patrick sing background vocals. It is a sad, meloncholy, haunting but hopeful song sung by Billy Payne.

A bit of backstory... Michael McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers in 1975, filling in on tour for lead singer Tom Johnston, who had become ill and couldn't perform. Johnston recovered and rejoined the Doobies the following year. When the Doobies began working on their 1977 album, "Livin' on the Fault Line," Johnston saw that the band was going in a different direction musically, and felt that the songs he wrote/recorded for the album didn't fit in with the direction of the album, so he chose to leave the band. The Doobie Brothers continued on with Michael McDonald as the lead singer until their disbandment in 1982. The Doobie Brothers got back together in 1989, with Tom Johnston once again the lead singer. The Doobies began a 50th anniversary tour in 2022 with Michael McDonald joining them. You have your Doobie Brothers fans who prefer the Tom Johnston-era songs, and those who prefer the Michael McDonald-era songs. I'm in the camp that likes both eras of the Doobies.

Oh man, the album "Minute By Minute" was my favorite LP of 1979-80! As everyone else has said, the Doobies can be thought of as two different groups -- the rockers of 1971-75, and the blue-eyed soulsters of 1976-80 (although the rockers could get soulful and the soulsters could rock just as well). I like the Tom Johnston era group, but *LOVE* the Michael McDonald era band. Keep listening to songs from both eras, you won't be sorry.
