That said, the oilers didn't make a "mistake" drafting him because he was absolutely the consensus number one overall pick which means almost everybody in the hockey world got that one dead wrong outside of Brian Burke who said he would've taken Morgan Rielley first overall, and he has been the best player taken near the top of the draft.

7:10 I played against Dane Fox in minor hockey, and he was the best player I had ever seen. We would lose 7-1 and he would score 6 of the goals. And he was undersized, playing a year up, with a late bday to begin with. Off ice troubles and injuries were his biggest detriment. He is also TJ Brodies cousin.

Correy Locke with Ottawa 67s in 02-03 had an incredible 63 goals 151 points in 66 games followed up by a 118 point season. But yet only managed 9 NHL games.

Their other linemate Martin Frk is a better example of someone who benefited from great linemates. Sure he's been up and down from the NHL and yes he recorded the hardest slapshot ever recorded at the one AHL allstar game but for a guy who put up 84 points in 56 games his final year with Halifax he certainly isn't a guy I heard anyone talking about these days

Pick after him was Mitch Marner... and if the Coyotes had any brains that year, they'd have taken Marner in knowing that Strome was on a bit of a stacked team. Funny thing about that year is that if Matthews had have been a day older, that whole 2015 draft would have been turned onto its head.

This season he's had a 24 goals, 48 points after 51 games in the KHL which isnt bad at all. He needs a real chance in the NHL in my opinion. Last year he was also a stud in the AHL with 34 goals, 67 points in 53 games

lemieux was otherworldly good, as good as gretzky imo. even at the end of his career when other superstars could crack a point/game maybe in their best year, he avg'd well above that until his last two injury riddled seasons. i don't believe any player since he retired has come close to his level of play.

A prospect similar to Caufield in that sense would be Marc Savard. In his draft year of 1995 he scored 43 goals and 96 assists in just 66 games but because he was a 5’10 center he wasn’t drafted until the 4th round 91st overall

Ryan Poehling for the Habs. Big Centre who can score seemed like he could finally be the #1 centre the Habs have been looking for for so long. Lead the world juniors in scoring, then had a hat trick in his first career game. He hasn’t even been close to reaching the same level since

Sure you can say that. But his development outweighs anything. The Habs don't need another Galchenyuk situation where we rushed a "too good to be true" prospect at the NHL level. Poehling has 15pts in 20gp in the AHL and is leading the team in TOI. Look for Poehling to be middle-6 Centreman shortly for the Habs on a DEEP center depth.

Poehling and Jordan Weal are tearing up the AHL right now, they just won’t be back this season because habs have too much depth. Next season after the expansion they’ll definitely be back though.

I'll believe it when I see it. I literally brushed DeBrincat off every year in junior. But he scored 51, 51 & 65 in his three years of junior with Erie. He was money in the OHL. His scoring has transferred to the big leagues. Caulfield is still a work in progress.

Jonathon Drouin. Mackinnon and Ehlers helped that kid shine in the juniors but he never has had that “breakout” year we were all expecting. I was so excited we got him in Tampa Bay only to watch it spiral downhill. Plus side of it all is Steve Y and his wizardry to get Sergachev who then proved to be a key part in our cup run and to our roster in Tampa.

Isaac Belliveau playing with Alexis Lafreniere in 19-20 in the Q(he played on PP1 with him too). He had 11 goals and 53 points in 62 games as a D-man. He was projected to be a 1st round pick and then fell back to Earth the next season with out Lafreniere and dropped to the Pens in the 5th round.

Hunter shinkaruk drafted in 2013 1rd 24th overall put up 49 goals 91 pts in 66 WHL games in 11-12 then in 12-13 put up 37 goals 86 pts in 64 games to play 15 games in the NHL and only to put up 4 points

I knew that guy was a bust because as a Devils fan in the forums, they're all comparing this guy to Zach Parise and wanted Jersey to draft him at 9th... I told them he gets all his goals the same way - was nowhere close to Parise - and won't get away with what he was doing on the NHL level. I wasn't right about all the prospects, but I was right about him. But NJ ended up trading that pick for Schneider and the Nucks drafted Horvat with it... probably a pretty good deal for Vancouver.

Dennis Wideman D. 65PTS. Rob played two more seasons with the Knights with 304PTS. Best season 57GP 57/88/145PTS. Played 7GP 3PTS with oilers. Traded to the Islanders 89GP with 47PTS. He never panned out in the NHL because of his lack of defense. -26.

Lookup Jan Caloun. Former San Jose Sharks prospect from the Czech Republic. Scored 4 goals on his first 4 shots in the NHL. Natural goal scorer. Scored a ton in the IHL. Never found success or stuck in the NHL…despite scoring 11 points (8g/3a) in only 13 games. 🤷‍♂️

The 2014 Memorial Cup-winning Edmonton Oil Kings suffered nearly the same fate as the Winterhawks. Henrik Samuelsson, Curtis Lazar, and Griffin Reinhart were WHL studs, but they all busted at the pro level.

Chris Gratton of the Kingston Frontenacs was a complete beast!!! Not so much after he was drafted to the Big Leagues. He and Keli Corpse played together in the OHL and tore up the entire league. Watching them in person as a young kid was nothing short of freaky! I don’t have their stats on hand, however it felt like going to see Gretzky and Kurri together in junior.

Pavel Brendl drafted 4th overall by the NYR in 1999. in Juniors Brendl absolutely destroyed the completion in the WHL. he was far and away the best goal scorer in the WHL. dude had back to back seasons where he scored 73 and 59 goals. had 134 and 111 points respectively on the Calgary Hitmen. Yet he only played 78 games in the NHL and had 22 points in his career. 11 goals 11 assists.

Dmitry Zavgorodniy. Last year he put up 67 points in 40 games on Rimouski Oceanic (playing with Lafreniere). This year he barely made the flames ahl team, and left for russia already this year

This happens a lot though. Take Darcy Tucker, for example. He had 89, 140 and 137 point seasons in the WHL and had a 93 point season in the AHL. Despite this he was still drafted 151st overall and became a scrappy grinder with a bit of offensive upside.

check Patrice Lefebvre in the QMJHL. The dude had seasons of 80 pts, 136 pts, 179 pts, and 200 pts in his junior years. He played with Stephan Lebeau. His biggest problem is that he was 5'6''. Only played 3 games in the NHL with the Caps. He still managed to burn every league he played in the minors afterward.

if you look past through history the only small guys that excelled were built like fire-hydrants; dionne, st.louis, fleury, gionta. its tough to play hitting hockey against big guys day in day out. remember brule with the giants ? he was an unbelievable talent and a wrecking ball. but he tried that at the nhl level where the guys are just bigger; 3" inches taller and 15-20 lbs. heavier avg.. it just broke him - literally. guys like gaudreau are rarer than flawless pink diamonds.

Simon Gamache anyone? 184 points in his last season broke Lemieux‘ play-off scoring record. Get that, he scored an unbelievable 57 points in a single playoff run, wrap your head around that. He was small and. or the greatest players, but an insane scoring touch, yet he was the 4 to last player taken in the entire 2000 draft 290th pick, 9th round. Dominated every league he ever played in except the NHL, only managed to play 48 games there (13 points)

The difference between WHL, college and the NHL are completely different. So all of the stats shouldn't matter until the player actually makes it to the NHL. It also matters who the coach puts you with in the lineup, that's huge!

We have seen a guy like Cole Caufield in a minute. His name is Alex DeBrincat who currently has 19 goals in 35 games and already has a 40 goal year in his belt. Caufield will do just fine. But DeBrincat was even further disrespected enough to go to the second round and go to my Chicago Blackhawks. Thanks other GMs!

Toss a nod into Tyler Johnson. Kid led the WHL in goals a year and got playoff MVP in his Mem Cup year. Was mad after at not getting any looks by the nhl so his dad made him finish his last year juniors and just have fun which he did and proceeded to tear it up. He then went on to get a tryout with Tampa which he took and is now a Crucial second line centre man on a Stanley cup roster.

Growing up in Edmonton I hated the Winterhawks because the Edmonton Oil Kings would meet them in the finals 3 years in a row and having season tickets for the Oil king we only get to see them come to town every second year unless the finals. I remember going to games and going wow that is a good team but I always thought from the 2011-12 to the 2013-14 season the Oil Kings were the best team in the WHL with the Winterhawks a close second.

Not the most mind blowing stats but a guy I played men's league against once one summer Dakota Conroy put up 56 points in 67 games and 61 points in 66 games with the PA Raiders playing alongside his linemate, some guy named Leon Draisaitl. After Drai left he was sent down from WHL to BCHL after only putting up 2 points in 10 games. Apparently he's now playing in the NorthPHL, whatever that is. Incase anyone is wondering how the men's league game went well he scored four goals on us but we still won 7-6 even though we were missing our only player with WHL experience, and I had a goal and an assist

Emerson Etem has 61 goals in 65 games for Medicine Hat Tigers in 2011/12. Late 1st round pick only had 46 points over 6 NHL season. Was too bad, the kid has serious wheel just could not finish in the nhl.

Look up Corey Locke. He lit up the OHL for the 67’s, was passed over for the world juniors and never really succeeded in professional play beyond a couple decent AHL seasons

Ramzi Abid anyone? 68 games, 50 goals and 85 assists for 135 points in his draft year and not riding shotgun to a star. Then as an over aber, 72 games, 67 goals, 91 assists for 158 points. Got drafted twice, 2nd and 3rd round. Decent AHL player, completely sucked at the NHL level and went to Europe at the age of 26.

Playing style matters too, Portland as an example. Players who play at a top level for years, they normally do very well at the NHL.
