Mine is when in NCAA playoffs the player pushed a defensemen into the goalie (should have been goaltender interference) and then they changed the rule after that. Was already a rule in the NHL, I believe, but still salty years later

If the NHL changes one rule it should be: if you intentionally put someone in the hospital(ex. head hunting checks, boarding etc.) and their injuries means they can't return to play the offender should be suspended for as many games as takes until the injured player returns to the lineup.

The stick throw was so good. Seeing Hughes dangle the shit out of the defense and then toss it into the stands is quite possibly one of the most fun goals I've seen in my life. I really think the only goal recently that was more fun was Pekka Rinne scoring

​@@UFCMania155 The stick-throwing incident was the year before the lockout, which incidentally was the last year it was actually sort of reasonable to expect a deep playoff run from the Leafs. I doubt they'll ever win another cup at this point, even if they actually assemble a team with both skill and heart, just because of the media scrutiny and our tendency to throw the organization under the bus at the first opportunity. I think the Leafs losing is so entrenched in Toronto's psyche at this point that there are entire BDSM communities devoted to it (don't take my word for it though).

I like the story of Don Cherry while coaching the Bruins sending out all HIS players onto the ice because Montreal had scored and had done the same. The ref said you can't do that, and the NHL changed the rule the following season.

Every ticket to an NHL game has a small fine print disclaimer on the back that states the dangers to attendees of flying pucks, broken glass, etc. If a fan is too drunk or blind to see a player GENTLY underhand toss a stick vertically over the glass into the awaiting arms of fans, they are probably too vulnerable to be trusted to see a hockey game EVER. I think what Hughes did brought MORE fans into future Devil games and bought a lot of good will and bonding with a team that hasn't had much to cheer about lately. If the NHL makes this a penalty, then the game has been taken over by lawyers and useless MBAs who know about risk analysis but know nothing of the value of human interaction and loyalty. No hockey fan EVER paid hard earned money to see a lawyer or bean counter.

Yeah, there's a pretty clear difference between recklessly endangering the crowd and a friendly toss. A simple clause that it's ref discretion on the throw's danger to the crowd would suffice.

@@april4657 Exactly. The stick rule should state context. Context really does matter. A player gentally tossing/handing his stick to a fan is very different from what Sundin did. The rule should be worded to cover a player throwing any equipment or object recklessly, not just specifically throwing a stick in any and all ways possible. I don't care if it's a stick, broken stick, helmet, puck, or whatever, no player should whip it into the crowd with callous disregard for fan safety and that should be a penalty and automatic suspension, but a player carefully tossing a souvenir to a fan should NOT be. NHL should stand for National Hockey League, not Nofun Hockey League.

I feel like the helmet rule would have been more effective if there was a clause that protected the player losing their helmet from getting a penalty if the helmet was forcefully taken off like it was in Krug's case. There he was blatantly interfered with, with no call. So he shouldn't be the one to get the penalty if a case similar to that happens again.

In the end, if the referee didn't see the blatant interference/unnecessary roughing to call a penalty on the player that did it, he can't possibly exempt the player who lost his helmet afterwards 🤷‍♀️

Rules already exist where what Perron did there should have given him a penalty anyway, but the referee didn't see it. The NHL definitely won't ask the refs to review systematically every play where a player loses its helmet to see if they missed something or not.

Honestly I agree with this so so so much or maybe if a helmet comes off they should allow the bench to send in the replacement player immediately instead of having to wait for the helmetless player to get to the bench that way there isn't too long of a gap if a defenseman has to get to the bench in blowing a coverage. This happened to the Pens in the Islanders series where Marino had his helmet stripped off of him had to go to the bench and Cici could make it out to the slot fast enough to cover the open player. It's happened to other teams too I understand player safety but this rule when it matters does more harm than good.

If I remember correctly a few years ago Rangers player (maybe Skjei) had done this when his stick snapped. We went to go throw it and it got caught in his glove and flew upward over the glass. And i know the Rangers specifically stopped allowing Lundqvist to give away his stick during the 3 stars of the game due to a fight over his stick

@@superxpro12 Exactly, if you actually watch the clip it looks really bad. Statsny comes in and hits an off balance player who doesn’t have the puck knocking him head first on to the ground. That’s by rule, a major. Interference resulting in a major injury. And people also tend to forget that Vegas had pissed away a 3-1 series lead as well. Not sure what all the complaining was about.

@@politicalbandwagon4989 The way you describe it, makes it sound like the refs basically actually did their jobs right. They can only call it as they see it and what they saw, and what I saw in the clip, looked like a major penalty. The Canucks lost their first 2 of 3 matchups Vs the Blackhawks during the leadup to their 2011 run due to epically bad/biassed officiating. I think the Hawks must have gotten at least 2 goals per game past Luongo because of guys like Buffaglin sitting on Luongo while someone like Kane would just flip the puck into the empty net, and the refs would count it every time, yet if a Canuck would so much as breathe on the Hawk's goalie too hard, TWEET, goalie interference no goal and penalty Canucks! The refs were also calling something like 3 or 4 penalties against the Canucks for every 1 Hawk penalty, even though the Hawks were the ones playing dirty. Then in 2011, Cancucks' GM at the time called the NHL out on this crap half way through the series, and suddenly, with the eyes of the world watching for shenanigans, the refs start calling them fair and low and behold the Canucks finally beat the Hawks and go on to come to within 1 game of winning the Cup! I'm sure there's plenty of other examples of the refs legitimately deciding the game by how they call it too, and plenty of examples of the refs just doing what they're supposed to. The former is what people usually notice though, as the refs calling it properly is what we expect and the bias or incompetency is usually exceptional and more noticed then the ordinary of a good ref calling the game well.

For me the Krug rule is so detrimental for the game that shouldn't be a penalty. It's already seeing some bad effects twice it happened to the Pens (once in playoffs). Where a defenseman "lost" his helmet in a scrum with a screening forward and was forced to go to the bench thereby losing coverage which resulted in a goal. If anything when a player loses a helmet and has to go to the bench the replacement player should have immunity from too many men bench minors and latitude to leave the bench early to mitigate some of those things. Or best solution go back to the way it was before. I mean Ruggers play rugby without helmets I just don't see why that rule needed to be changed

Actually, the rule is there to protect the players. So if you want to be allowed to keep playing, you must have a helmet, so you better make sure it is properly fastened when you step on the ice. Otherwise, you must leave. As for the comparison with rugby, it doesn’t even make any sense at all. Rugby is played on grass, with hardly any equipment other than cleats, whilst hockey is played on a thick layer of ice with a frozen puck, 5 feet + long sticks, razor-sharp skates (32 skates on the ice at all time, including the refs) and hard as hell pieces of equipment (shoulder pads, elbow pads, etc). I’m impressed there is still some people to compare the sports.

Bc 1 rugby players don’t run at 30 miles per hour before they make contact with each other and 2 they don’t play on a surface that’s as hard as concrete. It’s actually pretty simple given the massive differences in the 2 sports.

Intentionally tear off an opposing player's helmet while the ref's not looking to force that player to the bench or to chase after his helmet instead of playing the game, or that player gets a penalty for 2 minutes for the other guy interfering with him.

There was the rule about a third man in on a fight and during a fight the next player to leave the bench was a major penalty. Back in the seventies and eighties there were bench clearing barely. Love the shirt hanging in the background.

I remember watching "The Broad Street Bullies" documentary and there it mentioned that Flyers alone forced a lot of rule changes back in the 70's. Could you do a rundown on what was actually codified back then?

I remember hearing about that. the 70s was a bit before my time, but my dad used to tell me about the infamous bench clearing brawls the Flyers would cause every game just about. The entire team directly caused rules about players on the bench leaving the bench to participate in a fight rules, 3rd man in rules, and instagator rules were all added/changed/strictly enforced as a result of that crap to get that mindless goonery out of the game. In the next decade, the Edmonton Oilers also triggered some rule changes as they took advantage of rules to score insane amounts of goals. The 2 line pass rule, the no 4 on 4 for offsetting penalties rule and a few others were all invented to curtail the Oiler's blowout wins.

I remember Marc Savard threw his stick into the crowd when he scored the overtime winner in Game 1 of the 2nd round against Philly in 2010. I thought it was an awesome celebration the way he did it but I didn’t hear anyone talk about him throwing the stick into the crowd. If the fiberglass punctures you, it'd be alot worse then digging out a wood splinter. My most painful stick experience is when my stick caught a rut in the ice and speared my own ribcage as I was skating full speed.

Not a rule change, but a tidbit about another good stickhandler goalie: Jarmo Myllys was an insanely good stick handler. When he played in the Swedish league, he wanted to do a shootout, but wasn't allowed. Speaks volumes. He was in Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks in late 80's-early 90's. Never made a big break overseas, but an absolute legend in Finland (WC95 goalie, instant legend status in Finnish minds) and played long in Sweden as well. Just... I think it's enough to restrict the goalie to their own end of the ice, but the trapezoid is just ridiculous.

Patrick Roy blew a fuse once in a game vs the rangers, deked Gretzky and did a spin-o-rama to deke another player, then drew a penalty because he crossed the red line. Should have included that clip because it's hilarious.

How about Gretzky effecting the actual distance the goal line is placed from the end boards due to his behind the net set up mastery on a regular basis. And Gretzky rule #2: No more 4 on 4 for coincidental minors. Wow, that's 2 major rule changes by one player!

The rule change that needs to happen is in regards to penalties. During normal play a penalty will carry over from first to second, second to third, even third to overtime. BUT it does not carry over into the shoot out. It needs to. If you take a penalty in the last 1:59 of the overtime period that player should be ineligible for the shoot out. Seen a couple times where key players took a penalty in the last second of the OT and then proceeded to go into the shootout lineup. No repercussions for the penalty other than added to the list.

A minor penalty turns to a major if there is an injury on the play. Pavs head was cracked open. And he was out for the rest of the playoffs. There was blood on the ice that’s why there was a major penalty
