No mention of how they actually prevented the goaltenders from handling the puck in the corners behind the net because of Brodeur? (The trapezoid rule) Or what about ending a minor penalty after being scored on because of the 1955-56 Canadiens? (See Jean Beliveau's hat-trick vs Boston on the same 5-3 powerplay on 11/05/1955) Those were major changes to how the game was played, but yes, it's true you can't lick your opponents or waive your stick in their faces now. EDIT: Also, I always thought it was Kovalchuk's contract that forced the rules change on contracts term limits (his 15yr/100M$ contract with the Devils in 2010)

While he laid there choking the entire arena was dead quiet and full to capacity you could even hear anyone clearing their throat it was that quiet. Yawney did survive the ordeal but forced the NHL to introduce a no bridges or false teeth rule because of it. All pictures you see of players with missing teeth was because of what happened right here in Vancouver.

Fun fact, the Flyers road uniforms are technically illegal. The rulebook states that the Captain letters on jerseys must be of contrasting color to the jersey. As you may know, the Flyers’ C’s and A’s on their road jerseys are white, just like the jersey. The boarder is black, yes, but the actual letter is not a contrasting color to the jersey. I mean fighting will come back when teams start protecting stars and rely on the fighters instead of focusing just on skill. There’s dips in fighting throughout all of hockey history, maybe not to this extent, but it still happens. Look at Pitt. It’ll change again in another 10 years as teams refocus on other parts of the game

As a new hockey fan, this video had a lot of interesting information and overall I enjoyed it. The drastic decrease in the number of fights over the years is not something I have noticed since I just started following hockey in the last couple years, so I wasn't watching in the days of fights every other game. That being said, I enjoy the speed and skill of the game and don't really see how prolific fights enhance the viewing experience. I understand that fighting can be a strategic move and am not against it; I just don't understand the laments I read in the comment sections of other hockey vids about how hockey just isn't hockey anymore because players aren't pummeling each other all the time. I suppose it just depends on how long one has been a fan: traditional vs. modern hockey? Here's one for you. Goalie Clint Benedict back in the 20s. Goalies werent allowed to drop to the ice to make a save. He would still do it but claimed he'd slip on the ice and fall, which negated the penalty. It happened so much and other goalies tried it out so the league allowed goalies to drop down to make a save And here's a franchise causing a rule change In the 50s the Montreal powerplay was so good they would quite often score multiple goals on one powerplay. Back then the penalized player had to be in the box for the full time of the penalty. I believe the breaking point was when J Beliveau got a hat trick on one powerplay the league then changed it. But yeah Beliveau, Harvey, Moore, and H & M Richard on one powerplay unit, yikes thats tough

Either way, the NHL took offense to that. Many players were getting similarly long and unplayable deals, such as Zach Parise who was signed to a 13 year deal by the Wild.

I totally agree w you on the concussion not related to fights but we still have our tough guys they’re just more skilled n realize time n place for fights. Every 8 games I can deal w you don’t want to waste cap space or roster spot on someone who’s just there to fight. Look at Reves for example. Tough guy, hard on the forecheck, always in front of the net and can make plays. Same goes for Wilson. I want fighting to stay in the game but the fighters have to be able to do other little stuff to stay in the game.
@jewels3846 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. And even if not concussed, a player punches wrong or takes a hit wrong can hinder their ability to play. I do believe a part of avoiding fights is trying to not be put into an early retirement or medically benched situation. Hard to shoot a puck with a sprained wrist or you twist something in the middle of a fight. If i had the skill and the balls to play in the NHL i would avoid fights just to make sure I can stay on the ice.

If you are worried that one single play can affect your playoff standing, what about the other games during the season that matter just as much. Bounces and calls go both ways. Man. The Knights were such whiners after that game 7 they got a rule implemented for them. The NHL rulebook literally says a major can be given at the refs discretion. The refs felt it should be a major, and so it was. I personally think it should have been a double minor, but what's one minute? The Knights folded after that call, letting in 4 goals in UNDER 5 minutes, showing some of the laziest defense and worst goal tending not just in any playoff game, but any game period. Then, when they tied the game late, they couldn't get it done in overtime, and let Goodrow of all players, walk in and score the game winner. Let's not forget that they also had a 3-1 series lead that they blew, including an EMBARRASSING goal in game 6's overtime. They also got an incredibly favorable call that overturned a sharks goal for 'goalie interference' when the goalie wasn't even touched. I don't like the sharks, but the Knights lost that series all on their own. One, subjectively, bad call didn't lose it for them. I was so mad when the league apologized to them for that bad call, and didn't let those officials officiate for the next round. It set a precedence for all teams, and fans, to go 'what about this missed call?" or "What about this bad call?" "Well this call cost us a goal and a game, what about that?" Screw Vegas. They're the league's shiny new toy and get special treatment because of it, and because those refs from that game lost their job for the rest of the playoffs, it made other refs afraid to make any big calls for the rest of the playoffs, and even this regular season, the refs have let WAY too much go. It's ridiculous.

I think the decrease in fighting is kind of a bummer. The game more than just fighting, but it’s apart of the code. Don’t mess with the top boys, unless you want to get rocked. I see a decent amount of fights in my time rooting for the Avalanche, but it’s nothing like it once was. I totally understand the game is more about the talent of these guys, and the skills they have, but fighting is apart of a deep history, and I don’t understand why people want to remove it from the game entirely. It gets the crowd back in the game and changes the energy when your team is down, and there’s a good match up on the ice. That’s just my two cents. ☺️

The lottery rule should be switched back to what it originally was. A bad team getting lucky while rebuilding is one thing. A bad team getting unlucky while rebuilding could spell the end of a franchise. If tanking doesn't give some guarantees you'll bounce back, some teams might end up tanking till the team just lose all their support and go bankrupt. I wouldn't want my team to tank a whole decade just because luck. I bet no one is interested either.

I know he already clearyfied how he meant it. Yet, 210% fight decrease means 110% cuddle increase...

didnt bertuzzi force a rule change, i vaguely remember for his power moves in which he would use one arm to push opponents to protect the puck as he rushed the net.

Vegas got what they deserved. They actually got off lucky that Statsny didn't get ejected. There is a huge difference between a bump and throwing an off balanced player, face first, into the ice. I like the rule change, but in reality, VGK should've gotten a 2 minute penalty for Eakin's cross check and a 5 minute major for Statsny targeting an injured area, when the two double teamed on Joe.

The decrease in fight is probably due to the fact that teams cant afford to have goons on thier fourth line anymore.

Hockey dates to much earlier than 1800's, Ice hockey is more recent but the sport of using sticks on teams to bat around a puck like object has been seen throughout human history as early as 4000bc.

210 percent decrease? Buddy, if something decreases by 100 percent, it's all gone.

While Roberto Luongo was definitely one of the contracts, it would be incorrect to say he was the only contract that triggered the rule change. The first big one they objected to was Ilya Kovalchuk though also on the list were players like Mikka Kipprusoff, Chris Pronger and Sidney Crosby. Luongo's, however, had the most obvious implications due to the fun trade times.

Sidney Crosby did not have one of the "illegal" style contracts. Perhaps you are thinking of Marian Hossa, who signed with the Blackhawks immediately after his season with the Penguins and he signed to one of the back-diving contracts.

@@thebatman8895 Sidney Crosby's third contract, signed just before the 2012 lockout and activating 2013-2014: 12/12/12/10.9/10.9/10/9/9.6/9/3/3/3 - 12 years,, AAV 8.7, finishes when he's 38. It's not as extreme as some other examples but it's long and back diving.

The worst rule breakage in this video is the basic rules of math. You can't have more than a 100% decrease. A decrease of 100% equals 0. Unless there are negative fights happening, it is impossible.
