Hello. Great Layout! I got tip for you. Get a shallow box a bit bigger and deeper than your latex mold and fill it with packing peanuts, place your mould in the box on top of the peanuts and pour your plaster. It will hold your mold in place until your ready to use it.

Nice progress there Darryl, just to let you know, the UP just started their big boy steam tour for this year so the big boy is now out and about. May have to start running your big boy here soon! There are videos already of it. Layout progress though is looking real nice and coming togeather along quickly. Look forward to seeing the color being added next week!

Darryl, suggest that you have a look at Boomer Diorama's water builds. He uses a method called "Faux Glazing" which is a great solution for a fairly flat river. Your photos of the Weber River that you have shown in other episodes appears to be fairly flat - no real rapids or fast flowing water. I have used it in a couple of instances and I am really happy with the results. I would also suggest adding a couple more of those small rock molds on the less sloping side of the mountain. The photo of that slope that you showed seems to have quite a bit of rock sticking out between all the bushes, and I feel that you may find that the area nearest the front will be too much ground cover and detract from the area above the tunnel mouths.

Those molds rock, so much better than the WS ones we used 30 years ago lol. Are you going to water stain the rocks or flat-out paint them? David Fray was the master of this. Found this, which I know you know. Coloring rocks for model train scenery involves several steps to achieve a realistic appearance. Here’s a guide to help you create lifelike rocks for your model train layout: Materials Needed: Plaster or foam rocks (store-bought or homemade) Acrylic paints (various earth tones like browns, grays, and greens) Brushes (various sizes) Water Spray bottle (optional) Paper towels or sponges Weathering powders (optional) Steps: Prepare the Rocks: Ensure your rocks are clean and free of dust. If you made them from plaster, let them dry completely before painting. Base Coat: Apply a base coat of a light gray or tan color. This will be the foundation and will show through the subsequent layers. You can use a spray bottle to lightly mist the rocks with water before applying the paint to help the paint spread more evenly. Layering Colors: Using a technique called "dry brushing," apply darker shades of brown, gray, or green to add depth and texture. Dry brushing involves loading a brush with paint, then wiping most of it off on a paper towel before lightly brushing it over the rock surface. For deeper shadows, use darker colors in crevices and lower areas. Highlighting: Add highlights by lightly brushing lighter colors (like white or light tan) on the upper surfaces and edges of the rocks. This helps to simulate the effects of sunlight. Blending: To blend the colors and soften any harsh transitions, you can use a wet brush or sponge to dab and blend the paint while it's still wet. Weathering: Optional: Use weathering powders to add subtle color variations and a more natural look. Apply these with a soft brush and blend them into the paint. Sealing: Once you are satisfied with the look, seal the rocks with a matte or satin clear coat to protect the paint. Tips: Study real rocks to understand their color variations and textures. Experiment with different color combinations and techniques on a small piece before applying them to your entire model. Less is often more; subtle variations in color can be more effective than bold contrasts. By following these steps, you can create realistic rocks that enhance the overall appearance of your model train layout. Our friend AI, :)

Been using Bragdon for 20+ years. Great stuff! Made 100's of rock castings with his molds. Try a thin layer of sculpt-a-mold over the wet plaster. It will help hold it together.

Greetings Darryl, I enjoy watching your layout progress on the TV via KZbin. The short story is; I live in Peoria, IL. My wife and I are going to Denver (July 20th) to deliver a car, then heading to Ogden and Preston ID. Popping over the Rockies to Kaycee and Casper, then to Douglass ( July 28th), I'm hoping to be to see your layout if at all possible. I'm building UP Ogden UT to Pocatello ID. Looking forward to your reply, Scott Grubbs

When I do that I let the plaster cure fully then I remove the rock from the mold and attach it to the mountains with placter.

Not a good idea. Makes the rock look on top of the ground rather than coming from under the ground.

So if i am to understand, the tunnel portal at 0:34 is the east side of the tunnel, where the truss bridges and the gravel lot are? And since the right hand side of the layout is east, that means that where the viewer stands is where the mountainside that make the background of any shots from the parking lot is?
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 11 күн бұрын
So, to make the scene 100% true to the prototype, the mountain would slope from the facia down toward the backdrop and the Weber River would run along the backdrop. This would not be workable at all, so I took modelers license and flip the mountain front to back. Hopefully that makes sense.

@@EvanstonSub now I understand. the orientation was confusing considering how much time i've spent in Taggart having my left hand side to the east. The rock work looks great. When you pour the river it would be fun to add the ubiquitous rafters, and a few fishermen, the only people i see up there aside from us foamers, lol. Are you going to add the truss bridges or keep the girder bridges?
