Rock Hard 4X4 Fuel Tank Skid Installation - RH4X4 -RH-6001 - 2015 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited JKU

I finally got the Rock Hard 4X4 fuel tank skid installed. Did I absolutely HAVE to remove the tank... nahh... probably not. But I am glad I did, so I could clean and straighten it up some. A lesson I learned here is sometimes you need a bigger hammer! lol
I hope this is helpful for those wanting to know how to remove the skid or drop the tank in your driveway, and in particular, how to remove the skid and tank hanger without dropping the tank. I didn't mention this in the video, but I did have less than a 1/4 tank of gas when I did this. The less gas the better!

Well I'm glad I saw your video when I did. I was about to drop that skid plate to paint it with Raptor Liner spray and I was down to 2 bolts when I said: let me look on youtube to see if the tank is hanging on this plate. First thing I see is your video and boy am I glad I did. Thank you for sharing. You saved me a ton of money to have it fixed if that tank would have dropped . Great video.

Same was fallowing a skid review/ tutorial and they say nothing about straps or the fact that the tank is only held on by the OG skid. Got almost all off like you and did the same.

Looks good but personaly I must say that the factory skidplate holds up very good. Much better in fact that many thinks. Biggest issue with the factory skidplate is rust. Mine had a lot of rust after 9 years but I Sandblastered it abd put new paint on it. 2 more years and proberly it would have been to late but now it will survive another 9 years.

Great fix on the old bent bracket and combining them made sense. Did you rattle can the old bracket after the using Ospho?Seems both pieces could use slightly larger drain holes to give the mud a chance to wash out.

I’d wrap a chisel really good In tape and give that trouble area a good tap just to clearance it out and touch it up with some rattle can looks awesome tho 🤟

Thanks for posting this! Gave me my first good look at the bottom of the skid from the outside. Do you have any idea why there are so many small holes on the flat part of the skid? Someone drilled through one of those holes and stole a tank of gas from me.

What size are the bolts that attach the factory skid to the frame? I need one but a bit longer for my rock sliders that bolt to the frame.

What were you using for the rust that turns black? Have read about many products but haven’t bought anything yet. Not sure if that was what you were spraying that was green or if you used something else after. Thanks

No specific reason. I just went with RH4x4 for several things. (cage, sliders, and skids)

This might sound like a stupid question but why didn't the new skid plate just replaced the old one?

Because of the fact that the factory skid is also the tank hanger and for liability reasons they recommend keeping the factory hanger. That's all I can tell you. 😁
