Rubicon Express fuel tank skid / removing fuel tank from Jeep JK / rust repair with POR15

Fixed some rust on the frame of the jeep, removed the gas tank skid, added Rubicon Express skid plate to the factory fuel tank skid plate.

They should put some drain holes in the lowest part, water pools in there, that’s why rust out. Power washing would help too.

Thanks for the good help on removing the tank, I have to drop mine so I can remove two broken bolts from the rear floor seat frame attachment. Next time you have rust like that to remove borrow a 4” angle grinder with a wire wheel or cup brush and blast that crap off there a lot easier.

I find that the POR15 gas tank sealer which is a silver color works better than the black POR15 as more of a permanent sealer which will fill and seal pinholes.

I don’t care if electric related or not, I always disconnect negative battery terminal when doing any work where I need to disconnect a harness. 18mm bolts hold the skid plate on. I’d “Blaster” all the bolts the night before so they can soak for 12 or so hours. I just actually scraped and wire brushed mine and painted with some Rust inhibitor, but plan on replacing soon.

Pittsburgh Jk here as well. my skid plate is rusted and got flagged during my Pa inspection. You think i can just put on a Rough Country skid plate OVER the rusty factory skid plate and be ok? RC skid plate has great brackets that reinforce over the existing plate.

Can you drop the skid off of the tank without removing the whole tank?

Theyre bolted on with same bolts. Its possible. But itll actually be even more work. Might as well take the tank out as well.

The evap line that goes to the white fitting. The one that people have issues breaking. Can you just detach that where it plugs in near the fuel filler line? Instead of detaching it at the white fitting on the tank? I’m trying to avoid breaking it.

So which one is the fuel pump? The one on the upper part of the tank? Or the one thats on the center

The fuel pump is the circular part on the top of the fuel tank that all the hoses and wires go into.

He already has aftermarket skid plate and motor plate so why go through all this trouble for something that's going to rot out eventually I have to do all this again just put a new one on there aftermarket if possible much t h i c k e r
