How To Get Good - Set Your Narrative

Every time you die in a game, every time you fail in some way... what are you telling yourself? Some people are really hard on themselves, to the point they destroy any hope they have of succeeding in the future. I'm not saying everyone has it in them to be champion of the world... I'm saying you should at least give yourself the best chance possible and not ruin your days over things that probably don't even matter.
Setting your narrative to be positive and encouraging is a good start. So when you die in a game, don't say "Why am I so bad? Why can I never do anything right? Damn I suck.", instead, try to appreciate that the other person is highly skilled... or maybe they pulled off a good shot. Maybe see that you have a lot to improve ... and maybe you have the skills but you're having an off day.
We can't control everything in life. We just do the best we can and see what happens. Stressing over things or hating on yourself when they go wrong doesn't really help... unless you've found a way to use that negative energy to be a positive. So relax, appreciate you're probably amazing by any other standard in the universe and go enjoy what you do. Don't be so hard on yourself.
You don't have to be the best to be good. You already are, you just have to start appreciating why.
Good luck!

Just to further point... I lost the game in the video, but I was playing arguably the best player in Australia. Does that make it ok? What if I was just playing the best player in my state? How about city? How about suburb? How about best player in my house? Wait, I live alone... I am the best player in my house. YES! CHAMPION OF THE HOUSE! RESPECT!!!! Or maybe none of the above mattered anyway. I mean, where do you draw the line of who is ok to lose to? We're all human... all capable of amazing things. The fact we compete and lose or win against each other doesn't really change that. So in the same sense you feel ok losing to the best player in the world, you could probably feel ok losing to anyone. It's funny how we think being better than someone else means we're somehow qualified to keep living. Competition is good, I'm glad we compete... it keeps us on our toes, but let's not get lost in the fantasy thinking it actually matters beyond a friendly game. Enjoy the competition, encourage others to get better (it will help you get better too), and most importantly of all... be cool to yourself, you're not setting a good narrative by hating everything about you.

@Rocket Jump Ninja The joke is anyone thinking they're better than anyone else, we're all debt labor slaves on a self destructing path of imagery and petty appraisal seeking. Pointlessly seeking approval from peers and or competing with them for something absolutely futile. Everyone's capable of amazing things? This would be the only example i see most people being capable of.

Every word you said I second. In my mind the "false understanding of competition" is a great part of what makes parts of a lot of game communities so salty. Along that line of thought: What do you think about of the kind of statistics implemented in many games like keeping track of K/D ratios and the like? May those not serve as vehicles toward the "false understanding" ... ?
@timop6340
@timop6340 7 жыл бұрын
The point is thar you might be using those meters wrong IMHO. K/D 0.7 might be really good or really bad. Depends how good other players were and how good you are. Those stats in duel against Rapha for example, everyone probably gets the point. You should always compare you to yourself, not to others. AFAIK this is standard stuff at the moment in all sports with psychological coaching. And great talents have always realized that competing against themselves is the only way to progress.

Thank you Zy. This video came out at the exact right time for me. I have been struggling with anxiety and panic disorder since i was a child. Im 29 now and a few years ago i got my brain in order through meditation. Last week i quit nicotine, not tobacco but Swedish snus wich has about 22mg of nicotine in one dose. This whole week has been a constant panic attack and trips to the doctor. I quit it without patches or gum so probably a shock to my body. Headaches, twitches, panic attacks and constant fear of dying. But somehow this video game me some courage and motivation to tell myself to chill and once again conquer my own brain. Thank you and cheers from Finland 🇫🇮

Always like your calm. That composure from your voice gives people who listening to it much of reassuring feeling. Yet this message today here can completely change peoples life to some extent and gives me much respect of you. People who is confused between two ideas. One is "it is important what you do in your life" and the other is "it is important what the result is of what you do in your life" I have my own problems and although I and my friends all know that I am kind talented and amazing in someways, it is always a problem to praise myself and I am afraid of losing. Narrative is a powerful word to summarize what you need to improve to change this mentality. Sometimes, like the case on me, there is no elder brother or other ppl who purposely (tho may not intentionally) undervalue you but yourself. Your observation is insightful and powerful, thank you.

Wow, I did not expect that introspective thinking from this video. Great observations ! You seems to have a good intuitive sense of things. May I add something to this ? What you said about us creating our narratives, whether it's being inferior to someone of superior is very true. What I understood from this is that you think that believing in "good stories" and creating your own image so to speak is more important than believing in "bad stories". This might seems like an escape or solution, but in reality this is just another ego trap. What is important is to remember that YOU is not your story or what you think about yourself. You are the silent observer behind your story. Once you step out of this game of playing good or bad character, then you can start being yourself. Trick is to gradually widen the gap between who you are and who you think you are. And attention is the only tool we have for that.

I played cs 1.6 for about 2-3 years. I've found my own sensitivity, played and played and got a lot better than most other players. Then I got into tf2. First year was just me being a dumb pubber, second, I tried getting good (went into mge, trained my flicking, etc.). Everything was great. Then I decided to take a break for half a year. I came back with a totally different mindset. I watched the best scout in the game (clockwork) play. Whenever I died/missed many shots, I always told myself I won't be good enough like clockwork, or that he would make all those shots. Up until now, I always compared myself to him, and I feel bad because of it. It limits me from improving and that sucks, a lot. This video helped me realize something big, and it (actually, you, Zy) changed the way I think about things. Thank you for putting it out there.
