Once again, great walkthrough. This really helped shine a light on an expansive broadcast/stream setup! On a side note, those pre's do sound really nice on instruments for live streams and just recording. Very flexible for musician, live set streams. So many possibilities. IMO it's worth the price. Ordered. Thanks Tom!👊

The original Rodecaster was the greatest piece of consumer electronics I've ever used. It really upper the game on our audio podcast. I already pre-ordered the II and I think it'll help us go a step higher. Thank you so much for all of these detailed videos, Tom. Your original Rodecaster videos helped me in so many ways. Now with the II on the way, I feel prepared to know exactly what I'm doing with it, solely because of your video content.

I am always amazed how I find content creators I had no idea were even out there. The other night, I was starting to look into getting the RODECaster Pro II. Yours was the first video that popped up, I watched and I ordered the thing before the video was even done. And God Bless Amazon because this was 1:30 in the morning and when I woke up around 8, the box was on my front steps. I played with it today and I am BLOWN AWAY. Thanks for your 'sound'-ful insight! - New Subscriber!

Tom, I really love your videos on the RCP 2. Additionally - it is the ONLY interface that I've heard that makes the Rode Procaster mic sound good. I recently switched from a Rode NT1 to a RE 20, and really, really wanted to like the Rode equivalent, but I've never heard the Procaster sounding in a way I really liked, until this video.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
That's funny because the reason I got the PRocaster was after so many people recommended AND it sounded good every time I've heard it. But you're 100% correct- it does sound great on the RCPII, even with my faulty cable.
@petrasvilkas
@petrasvilkas 2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Must be personal taste on the Procaster, but maybe the RCP 2 makes everything sound good. At this point, my one mic setup doesn't need it - but being able to record AND be an interface at the same time is the killer feature I might decide I have $700 of need for.

Amazing value you are putting out Tom. Thanks you so much. If, by any chance 😊 you are talking to the rode people, maybe there is a chance bringing up the internal loopback functions, to send different mixes to different stream locations internally. Basically just a matter of internal routing. Since RCP2 has enough processing power, it might not be too hard to integrate this. Additional functionality like this kind of routing would open up the market for streamers / (live) musicians even more for Rode. Presonus and Elgato have done it. I would hope this is on the Rode agenda for future firmware updates for this otherwise amazing unit. Thanks again for this great video Tom! 🙏

Awesome video as well! Thanks so much for doing this one, massively helpful! So from what it looks like, the Rodecaster Pro II has two audio devices that show up on the main computer and one on the secondary computer? This Is a good start, but I really am hoping they'll add a few more in a firmware update. Most streamers who game need a channel for Discord, one for Spotify, and one for their desktop audio. All from one computer. So a few more would make this perfect! Either way though, it's a fantastic device and I really appreciate you doing these videos on it. Thanks so much!

Curious if you lose your files or if they get corrupted in any of these scenarios: - USB power cable gets disconnected while recording - USB hard drive is disconnected while recording. Does it have a battery built in to "close" the audio file so it doesn't just end up corrupted? Makes me nervous.

Thanks for the video. You have been a big help with reviews in the past. That said, I used to be all about the discreet hardware device versus using a computer with add-ons. Lately though, I’ve tried to cure my G.A.S. syndrome by looking for alternative options using my laptop, iPad or iPhone instead. Sometimes alone and at other times with add-on hardware to accomplish the needed result, if necessary. What does the RodeCaster Pro II do for me that I can’t do with my MacBook and a less expensive audio interface that I need for other stuff anyway? Plus, with my laptop and iPad, I get a much bigger screen and the ability to have a lot more tracks/channels if I need to. I also already have a recorder/mixer that can do most of this stuff. What’s the compelling reason for the RodeCaster Pro II? Thanks

There are a lot of ways to achieve the same goal I think. What’s great about the RCP is having so many components, both physical and virtual, in one standalone device. At least that why I like it. It’s kind of like how some people will make entire music albums using software while others will stick only to instruments running into a recorder. They’re both great, it’s just personal preference 👍

Well that road catcher pro shoes sounds perfect for me I would love to see you do the sound effects kind of like the professional broadcast sound effects where they bring in the the title intro and the station identification special effects and all those in between weird special facts and music effects and all those things that they use on broadcast and shows I'd like to see how to use that too. I also thought you were freaking funny toward the Middle with all those weird effects making you sound like Chip and Dale and all those others I thought I was soiling myself or something like that but boy that sounds really good for music. By the way nice job on talking about it I would love to learn how to use it like a tutorial how to use everything and so I could do an outstanding podcast show. What I'd love to see them come out with a podcaster pro is a 16 channel and a 24 channel now for that reason it's like if you bring in a band or small orchestra you could use a lot of those mics for recording when you bring in a gas they're playing music like a band there's always a four band or seven Man band or even a miniature orchestra and you doing the guest show that would be cool for that too or a radio show that does mystery shows that's what I like to see them come out with with the same stuff. All in all great job do some more.

Thanks for the kind words! The sound effects (copyrighted or not) should just be drag and drop through the Rode Central app. I've never personally had to take any extra steps to add anything. If that's not working, it might be worth trying a reset to see if there's a bug somewhere. It could also be an issue with that specific audio file. You might be able to open it in another application like GarageBand or Quicktime and save it again as a new file.

So when using the SSD, does the Rodecaster just create a new folder each time it’s used? Also is it possible to create separate mixes to send to each headphone output in logic or is it a shared mix?
@tombuck

Basically, yes. Each recording instance is a new timestamped folder.

Thank you so much for these videos! They are so helpful. I have my one on preorder based on your recommendations, can’t wait 😀 quick question on the automation with logic. In your video you had the fader and knob set to work on track #2 in logic and it seems like that was hard coded. Is there any way to have it cycle through different channels (maybe on a different smart pad?) so I could use the fader and knob across different tracks? Would love to use this as a control surface and eliminate my current one with this. Thanks!

How do you control the smart pads volume to have it fade in an out while live or for recording? For example when looping in intro music or for outro. The RCP I had the volume slider next to the pads for convenience. Great videos!!

You can assign them to any fader, or set them to trigger automatic actions like fades 👍

Gosh, that is a nice-sounding Mic! Who bugged you for what seemed like a century to get one? OH, great sound pads with Sound effects are another thing along with the puns to rag you about...Get good cable and save your HAIR - MOGAMI cables! Sure wish they would have added a Line Out option but as the headphone jack are much better I guess that will work. I wanted a 32-bit float recording option but at that price point not going to happen. NIce series of reviews/overviews Tom it sure has kept you busy...
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt! I know 32 bit float is a popular request. I don't know enough on the technical side of things, but I wonder if that's something that could potentially be added (or enabled) with a future firmware update? I have a feeling they've kept a few things up their sleeves for later.
@mattwruff
@mattwruff 2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck I'm betting there no way. To get 32 Bit float you have to have A/D processor that can handle them. 24bit audio is all you need so what 32-bit does is allow you to have the 24bit but with an insane amount of headroom. 24 bit gives you 144.5 DB of gain but has a loud source and your 'knobs' in the wrong place and you will clip and clipping can't be fixed. what 32-bits gives us is an insane 770 DB of gain so as long as your mic doesn't clip you will not clip PERIOD.

at 0:34 I see there are different rode connections (stream, system, virtual, chat and main). Are those inputs? Could you connect different computer audio sources to those inputs? For example discord out to "Stream", Chrome browser audio to "virtual", game audio to "stream", operating system audio to "system"? then can you assign those inputs to individual faders? I asked a very similar question on your previous video, but this video get much close to answering that question. This could be a very handy solution to daily use issues.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
Some of those are form the Rode Connect app, which is different from the RCP. For now (as I understand it) you can send separate outputs to RCP Main and RCP Chat along with whatever is connected to USB 2.
@shortrhalf
@shortrhalf 2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck that's not exactly what I'm asking. Imagine (on your mac mini) you want to send audio from different applications to different inputs on the RCPII. So put discord/zoom on a fader, put web browser audio on a fader, put game audio on a fader, put music (ex spotify) on a fader. Currently I'm solving that problem in windows using Asio Link Pro which works, but frankly isn't reliable. If you switch the RCPII to "multi" mode your computer should be able to see each separate ASIO channel. Can this be achieved? If a piece of hardware/software natively supported this it would be such a solution to so many headaches lol.

To me this is the question I would like to know also. Being most of the 14 channels are hard assigned I thought rode would use 2 virtual channels to use to send discord or web browsers. Great job showing all the rest of the great functions. 👍 I'm sure if the audio routing isn't there yet it will be soon.

Hey TOM! do you know how much storage memory you get with the RCP2 for storing sounds on the sound pads (now smart pads)? The RCP1 had 512Mb that would get full quickly because it only stored in WAV format with huge files , even if your originals were MP3 they would get converted into those huge WAV files.

@@tombuck Thank you Tom, please ask them... Being able to store prerecorded interviews is limited big time by the space on the rcp1. Also ask them if there is a chance the sound effects or interviews could now or in the future be stored in the sound pad as mp3 files to optimize the space.

Great Video. Just wondering on the Roadcaster Pro II that the smart pads are always on the Chat sound output looking from my mac while the mic is on the Main Stereo. With Ecamm Live easy to use, but how would you configure your Zoom call only need w/o Ecamm so I can use Rode + Mic + Sound Pads? Loopback?

With the most recent firmware you can choose which channels you want included on any of the USB outputs, so it doesn't matter which you choose (Chat or Main) as long as the channels you want are included. This can be done under the "Custom" option for each channel's output.

Hey Tom, big fan of your videos and reviews from The Netherlands here. Just got two questions about the blue XLR cable. 1) What is the sound quality like? 2) I see it's 25 feet long, do you need that full length in your setup? If not, what do you do with the excess length? I'm asking this, because I recently bought a Sommer 5m blue XLR cable at Thomann, but even that one is too long and when I plug that into my Rodecaster Pro II and Shure SM7B, I hear some high frequency noise whenever I speak into the mike. At first I thought that curling th excess length into a coil was delivering this weird noises, but I do think that it's a cable thing. But I really need just 2.5m, and then a 25 feet (7.5m) cable seems a bit long, but if the quality is solid, I might be tempted. Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work, Chris

Once the file is in your computer, you can do anything you'd like with it! Most commonly, that means uploading it somewhere like a podcast host or KZbin. There are a ton of recording apps out there, some paid and some free. Logic, Ecamm, and Audition are popular paid ones, while Audacity, OBS, and GarageBand are free options. You can even use something basic like Quicktime to record.
