It was always a special night when you tuned into Carson at 11:30 and found out Rodney was a guest that night. Wife and I been married 26 years. Sept. 3 1992 was our first date. We saw Rodney with Robbin Williams, Jim Carrey, Bernie Mac and Pauli Shore in Anaheim for the Tribute to Sam Kinison. It was being shot for HBO. Not a bad first date. We sat on the isle that Rodney came down and he put his arm around my wife before he got to the stage. She was so happy. I haven’t been able to top that one. You can watch it on KZbin Sam Kinison tribute for HBO. I watched it 25 yrs. later. We were in the fourth row. Couldn’t see us. Too bad. My Girls would have liked that..

There's a video on KZbin of Rodney Dangerfield on David Letterman's show but David Letterman kept interrupting the flow of jokes. Rodney D pauses before the punchline and Johnny Carson knows to keep quiet during that pause. David Letterman didn't know and tried to come in with his own wit - it's called 'treading on the jokes' and it ruins the surprise of a funny line. Johnny Carson seems to be doing nothing as an interviewer but in fact he is trusting the comic to fill the silence with something worth waiting for. That's a skill which many TV presenters are too anxious and too self-promoting to nurture.

She had all the curves and the sexy sway in her walk.... I thot she was out walking with her dad... But as I passed them and make the testosterone mandated look over the shoulder, I glanced real quick at the man, and it was Rodney Dangerfield.... Suddenly I was more star struck with Rodney than the blond.... That's how great he was.... He just nodded and said, "How ya doing?" At his age, he could still make the audience roar with laughter. It's very tough to do but Rodney was a huge talent for many years. I guess you all know that well. I miss Rodney and love to watch the old clips, reminds me of the good old days watching Carson as a teenager with my parents (when I was lucky enough to stay up a little later). Nowadays there isn't a show made that parents and kids watch together - they will never have the chance to reminisce like I do with old tv shows, they spend so little time together compared to the generations before.

"I can't get no respect." One of the greatest lines in stand-up comedy. It's right up there with Henny Youngman's line, "Take my wife... please." Rodey's brand of self-deprecating humor endeared him to everyone. When he appeared anywhere, you knew you would laugh.

I have to agree. Henny Youngman and Rodney Dangerfield, two of the best live shows you could possibly see. They new how to take command of an audience and work them into complete hysterics. The warm up comedians never stood a chance when one of these two were headlining.

@@motogp001 Speaking of warm-ups... I never knew that programs like Carson's Tonight Show would have comedians come out before the shows started taping and "warm up" the audience for Carson. Carson mentioned it once when Buddy Hackett had been out and the program started with the audience in hysterics. Apparently Buddy been treating them to portions of his Vegas act which was not for prime time.

I remember when Johnny was getting close to retirement and so many celebrities were teary-eyed during their last visit. Johnny had done so much for so many careers. Rodney caught me off guard for a moment when he changed gears and talked about May 22nd (Johnny’s last day). He really sold it and even the audience got quiet - until he lowered the boom. Great last appearance for Rodney, and I know Johnny and the audience loved it.
