Previously uploaded in mono; here in full and in glorious stereo. Plus some bonus audio of Roger performing "Won't Get Fooled Again" with the CBS Orchestra during the commercial break after his chat with Dave.
The performance of "Substitute" that was broadcast was Take 2. It occurred after the show taping, with the audience still present. It was likely redone because Roger had botched his mic swirl during the first take. A brief clip of the screw-up was shown later during his chat. Raw footage of the aired Take-2 performance is included at the end.

I was in the audience for that show. He threw his microphone into the air as his song ended and didn’t catch it so they had to reshoot the ending. Even in that moment he was sweet and charming. Legends live on, I’m so glad to find he’s still performing.

I remember watching this in a hotel room with my wife on our honeymoon night and thinking it was really good. We divorced 3 years later and I think she lives in Guam now. This performance is still really good!

LOL. What a trippy comment. It's my favorite comment of the year so far, and it's five years old.

Great, strong fun version of Substitute. The band really kivjed it, especially Eric on guitar who had Townshends riffs and tone down. Great vocals by Daltrey and Barron as well.

Back in the mid-90s, Spin Doctors were sooo tight. They played the Chilli Cook Off in Washington, DC several years in a row. This is back when it was kind of small it was in Georgetown at the park under the Whitehurst freeway at the park across the street from The Bayou. Good times back then.

Thanks, Don. An amazing piece of rock history. All the great artists on the show, it boggles the mind. Stevie Ray Vaughan was my personal fave. Show also how good the Late Show band was, could adapt to any style and keep up. And then some!

Not only are there a treasure trove of performances from all the years that show was on, Paul Shaffer & the other members of The CBS Orchestra set the standard for having a kick-ass band to be part of the overall vibe on late-night talk shows. Paved the way for Max Weinberg’s band on Conan, and currently, ?uestlove & The Roots being the house band for Fallon. All of those shows , and others like them, have all had some wonderful performances in the history of modern television. For anyone who enjoys that type of entertainment, there’s a lifetime’s worth of content to revisit, and we can thank KZbin for that. There’s currently a show called Kill Tony, (that hosts new comics, then has a panel of seasoned veteran comics rate the material, do a little interview with them, and provide feedback for the newcomer, along with some friendly roasting), and was started by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, and (former Joe Rogan Experience podcast producer) Brian Redban. Hinchcliffe was just featured on the recent live Netflix broadcast of The Roast of Tom Brady, and he & Redban took their LA based show to Austin, TX. That city is a hotbed of music, so the Kill Tony show now has one of the best house bands around, which is a great addition for their show. Roast style comedy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but regardless, the production & entertainment value has gone up in the 11yrs since they started it, and has become the #1 Live podcast on the internet. Personally, I think the addition of the great band has certainly helped them gain popularity, and they have Paul Shaffer, and all the other late-night bands that came before them have helped their continued success. Also, with television networks viewership numbers on the decline because of having to compete with web content & subscription services like Netflix, it’s nice to see Kill Tony carrying the torch for a style & format of a show that on tv networks, is a dying breed.

I'm not particularly a fan of this song, but the energy here is great. I never realised just how tight the Spin Doctors were, and those high vocal harmonies are right on the money. Just a great performance all round.

Spin Doctors were terrible on SNL but this is definitely a solid performance. Roger Daltrey still sounding great but not having to "carry" the band's lead singer who does a good job as well.

Spin Doctors would have become more mainstream if the bass player acted like he wanted to be playing in the band. He always presented like he was a hired gun who was adding his talent to songs he would rather not be playing. Guitar is phenomenal and his stage presence was awesome. Bassist ruined the performances. His playing is top notch but ....
@SXI96
@SXI96 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but in his defense, have you ever watched John Entwistle play? He was always stoic and let his bass playing do the talking
@sticksnstones23
@sticksnstones23 Жыл бұрын
@@SXI96 talent is talent. But when you choose to be a live performer the job duties get enlarged. Stoic is cool if you come off like you love your band. If you come off like you love your role in the band. You love the music. You love your band and you want to invite others to love it as much as you ….. winning recipe for super stardom.
