The original Spin Doctors lineup is still together and, before Covid, we’re still touring and playing packed shows almost every weekend somewhere in the US. Chris Barron is currently recording his next solo album at Engine Company Studios in NYC.

My high school booked Spin Doctors to play a big show there in 1994. The posters were on the walls of our school in the early fall of '93. At that time, "Two Princes" and "Little Miss..." became big hits. The show was canceled after that. I heard the reason was because the town didn't want a loud rock concert on the football field. I think the real reason was the band got famous overnight and was too big for a high school show.

At least he has good tastes. Soul Asylum I feel was slightly more successful obviously. Dave Pirner still tours as the only original member of Soul Asylum and their album from last year "Hurry up and Wait" is really good. Spin Doctors were ok. I recall you did a shorter/less detailed version of this video last year, so I'll just repeat one of my comments here: I call it "Hootie & The Blowfish" syndrome: Big selling debut album with hit singles that get overplayed; followed up by sophomore album which while having a decent single, sells even less. "In the early ‘90s, intertwined bands Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors and The Authority frequently shared bills at clubs throughout Downtown New York. In 1991, the members of these three groups solidified their collaboration by forming the loose super group Wasabi. Though the jazzy, highly-improvisational group’s exact lineup changed a bit over the years, the band’s core lineup usually consisted of Blues Traveler frontman John Popper, Spin Doctors bassist Mark White, Spin Doctors drummer Aaron Comess and the musicians’ teacher/mentor Arnie Lawrence on saxophone. Authority percussionist Rene Lopez and Spin Doctors guitarist Eric Schenkman were also members of Wasabi at most of their shows." (Jambands)

Music changed seemingly overnight in the early 90s. One minute it was Spin Doctors and Jesus Jones, the next minute it was Nirvana and Soundgarden. Pop acts like Roxette, Amy Grant, and Michael Bolton vanished after that. Groups like Spin Doctors were associated more with those radio pop acts at that point. Once music softened up with post-grunge groups like Hootie & the Blowfish and Gin Blossoms, that would’ve been their comeback window but they missed it.

I always liked these guys. After their first 2 albums they just disappeared. They reappeared in the early 2000's and were booked to play a show at our local community college. The small theater on the small campus held maybe 300 people. We arrived early, and not many people had arrived. As the showtime was getting closer, there were only about 40 people in the audience, and that's where it stayed. 40 people. They played the show, but it was obvious that they were bummed. I kinda felt sorry for them. The town we live in isn't huge, but it sits in between two large cities. I really thought they'd draw better.

I saw them play in Seattle right after a hockey game. Sometime in the 90s…. Was so embarrassed for them. You could just see people streaming out the exits while they played. We left eventually too. 😅

Pocket is a great album with the album tracks sometimes outshining the singles. Shinbone Alley /Hard to Exist is an amazing jam "how could you want him..." Is probably my fav single from album. Forty or Fifty & Refrigerator Car are great songs too

Agreed! 'How Could You Want Him is my fave, too,, although there's not a bad track on the album! It's a shame they couldn't sustain their momentum when it came time for a follow-up. I saw them 3x in the early 90s, right when they were breaking out with Two Princes, 3 hours with no opening act (the best one), and twice again in the mid-90s, both on triple-bills. Both headlining at the Greek Theater in L.A., the first with Screaming Trees & Soul Asylum, the 2nd with Cracker & the Gin Blossoms. Finally, I saw them about 7-8 years ago at Pershing Square, also in L.A. There's some clown posting all over the comments on this song, about how he hates them, yet he can't stay away. I think he needs to smoke a bowl & chill. It's just party music. Albeit damn good party music.

I think of them as a 3-hit Wonder. "Jimmy Olsen's Blues", "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and "Two Princes." However, they have done some other great stuff, and I love their vibe. I remember being very disappointed back in the 90's by "Cleopatra's Cat", (too much of a departure for the casual fans), but the rest of that album is solid.
