A day after Megyn Kelly sparked a major controversy with her comments about blackface costumes, Roland Martin and Amy Holmes, co-host of PBS's "In Principle" spoke with the NBC talk show host about her remarks.
Martin not only addressed the use of blackface, he also explained the history of the practice from its inception all the way up to the present day.

This attitude of yours is why white people throw up their hands and quit trying to listen. No mater what you do you get called racist. A kid in my elementary school did a duet with himself of Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney's "Say Say Say" painted himself half black, half white. A black kid in class taught him how to do some Michael dance moves to make it better. Everybody loved it, no one was offended. We weren't sissies back then.

FOX would never get the black vote anyway, so no need for an apology. But NBC needs blacks to go out and vote democrat, don't forget we are only two weeks from the midterm election. That's what this is all about, getting your vote. And Megyn was just reminded to say these things in private, with her friends, and not in public, because she might offend some nice black folk

Zara, I hope you never make a mistake. If you do, I hope you don't lose your job. Megyn did not make a mistake here btw imho. She did not endorse blackface!! If you actually listen to her words she is asking the question why is it wrong to dress up as diana ross out of admiraton. Blackface was horrible because of the cutting parody aspects, over the top facial expressions, comedic dialogue making black folks sound unintelligent, and the mean intent behind it to make black people look like stupid buffoons. It was comedy at the expense of black people, and more about putting them down than anything else. We don't need entertainment like that anymore. Megyn Kelly was not referencing any of that. She was not talking about dressing as Diana Ross to make her look bad and make fun of the entire African American race as a whole. The way I took her question - she was talking about becoming Diana Ross for a night out of admiration from a standpoint of loving her as an entertainer, loving her voice, and her dance moves. How anyone can take that as an endorsement of blackface is really a stretch on the truth as far as perception goes. Having said that I don't like Megyn Kelly personally and its very ironic I find myself in the position of defending her. I'm not really so much defending her as saying lets actually look at the words she said, "hey it'd be cool to dress as diana ross" and not spin this up into a tornado of "FIRE HER, she wants minstrel shows". On top of all this, are we really in an era where people cannot ask questions? Where there is an expectation of "right not to be offended"? There are many comedians who have voiced there opinions as such if thats true, what we're really talking about is seismic shift in the wrong direction for society where people are enslaved in their minds with what they can and can't say for all the wrong reasons. I don't see the problem in dressing up for halloween as a specific person you like, who happens to be black, and becoming that person you admire for an evening once in your life. I also don't see a problem with the Wayans Brothers doing "White Chicks", or Robert Downey in "Tropic Thunder", or Jamie Foxx in his new movie "All Star Weekend" thats coming out in a few months (he play a white cop) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWiumpivjbSMfZY . Do you have an issue with any of those things? If you have an issue with what Megyn said, then realize you gotta apply your logic equally in all directions - cause thats whats going to happen in society even if it wasn't what you intended. My feeling is no, none of us have a "right to not be offended". Of course there is a line on that, as there should be, but right now it is being pushed way too far to muzzle people. Don't think this will only apply to caucasions. Eventually, it will come back around and the muzzle will be applied to everyone. I am talking about comedy, entertainment, but also just normal day to day people. School kids talking, neighbors talking, people asking simple questions, stating whats on our mind, trying to have an open honest dialogue - just normal people, not racist kkk level idiots. Racist people aren't even the ones trying to understand each other! Racist people are much more happy stuck under their rock and living in their cacoon bubble. If normal people cannot interact and have more "fear of saying or doing the wrong thing" its just gonna cause more anxiety and depression in a world that already has way too much of that. As African Americans move up the chain, and many more do get better and better jobs all this same stuff about trying to avoid the landmines will apply equally and will hurt them too.

Limitless to Megyn Kelly, this is probably like her dog if she had one, talking to her and crying out why are you hurting me. The typical response of the abuser would probably be to break down, cry and say that they had no idea that they were causing the dog pain. You may hear this and go "A dog?" Yeah, it's not about the dog, I could've said a cat. It's a strawman. What the point is, is that you never may never know that you're causing harm to someone (something), until they say something. For a dog, they'll never say anything. So for Megyn, this probably comparable to a dog, because as an anchor on Faux News, she was paid not to care or listen.

Tara Ouden exactly, they (the audience) were so extra, her apology was not sincere. Also, if you don’t understand why people made such a big deal about the topic then do your research before stating your opinion on syndicated TV for the world to hear. If she would have been as good of a reporter/analyst as she believes she is, she would have done her research so she would have to start her show off with two word “I’m Sorry”. So true about educating ourselves. Even I as a black person did not really know the history of somethings until I chose to minor in African American history in college bc I felt like I did not know enough about myself and my own history having been educated in the typical u.s. You make a good point as to her journalistic integrity (I don't like her) but I view her current show as less news based and more based on the Oprah model of people just talking and saying opinions. When one really looks at the things that made blackface so hurtful, the truth is megyn was not really referencing any of that. Dressing up as diana ross for halloween, or any person you admire should be ok is what she said. Thats got zilch to do with minstrel shows and caricacturizations making black people the butt of the joke. There literally isn't any joke or ulterier motive with what she mentioned. Are we really saying there are no black people that white people can admire, or that its not ok for caucasians to want to dress up as a person they like? Is it really wrong for a white child to want to be the black panther for halloween or for a black child to want to be elsa? These are honest questions having zilch to do with racism, yet this is that state of our "right not to be offended" society that is now fair game to get a person fired over.

This woman is smart intelligent and anyone who is willing to think that she didn't know, well this is whats wrong in this country. She forgot where she was and the true her came out. And the audience give her a standing ovation for a piss poor apology. Wow. As long as their are no consequences for white ppl actions they will continue to do and teach white supremacy period. Its only still here because it's still being taught to the kids. If it wasn't racism and white supremacy would've died out by now. I ain't falling for that "oh, poor li'l ol' me" act from Meghan Kelly of pretending like she was the unfortunate victim in this whole hullabaloo. She knew what the implications were and how profoundly ignorant and wrongheaded her original statements were, but got called out for it and was like, "What can I do now to come off contrite and sincere?" Then that's where the "tears" came in and those black people in the audience fell for it talking 'bout how much they reciprocate their love for her. That "apology" was not so much for us as it was for the comfort of her soul and conscience. This has been going on way too long in too many instances. Too forgiving after a "I'm sorry" bone is thrown out there to chew on for black folk. Plus let's take into account who she was with FOX. This is not a coincidence. Wake up! Side note: definitely appreciate the eloquent edification offered by Roland Martin. The brotha knows his stuff.

Joseluis Ojeda I don't agree. You don't think it's damaging to society for everyone to be walking on metaphorical eggshells just waiting for one egg to inadvertently crack and all hell to break loose? This is so not right. Just because we have been oppressed by white people doesn't mean we get to oppress them in return (definitely not comparing slavery to PC-culture, so don't say I am, one is obviously much worse, but one big wrong and one comparatively tiny wrong still don't make a right) by attacking them over every little thing, just because they don't know our history like we do! This isn't right and you know it, but you want to play the victim and feel righteous indignation to stroke your own ego. No one is giving anyone the benefit of the doubt in this society any more, and it's causing all of the division we see in society. I don't see Megan Kelly not hiring blacks, or treating them with disrespect. These are the *actions* that define racism, not ignorant words such as these. Putting on blackface and *using it as a means to put black people in their place* is racist. Someone making their skin darker is done all the time. It's called getting a tan, for Pete's sake! There's nothing racist about that. And that's exactly what Megan Kelly was getting at. She ignorantly said "blackface" because she didn't know the history, when she could have easily said "tan" and no big deal? What the hell. We know the intent was benign but we are all outraged over something! One wrong word and outrage artists jumped at the opportunity to take out their anger on someone, or others on social media looking for the next viral hit. You really think she would have said that if she did know the history? Even racists don't make it a habit of losing their job. The point was obvious. Her mistake was obvious. But instead of giving her a pass, she's ruthlessly attacked for not knowing. Pointing it out is fine, but the things being said about her online and in these comments are too far. This is ridiculous and really upsetting. It makes me ashamed I'm near the same ideological spectrum as these people. We should really consider the Golden Rule in how we treat other people. How would you like it if Jews started attacking you and asking for your head simply because you didn't know one of the "Jewish PC Rules" even though you NEVER intended any harm by it? Put yourself in her shoes. You could easily, easily, be ignorant of a piece of history that is not taught in schools and is not apart of your culture. How would you feel if you were unjustly accused of being a racist just for not knowing a "PC Rule"? If *intent* is not clear in a "grey" statement such as this, we should kindly correct them and move on with our lives. Not viciously attack them and accuse them of a mindset they *may not be guilty of.* In the American criminal justice system, it is said that we should rather 1000 guilty men go free than 1 innocent man be wrongly convicted. While this is an ideal that hasn't historically been met, especially for young black men, the ideal is there for good reason. We don't want people living in fear that at any time they can be wrongly accused and have their life taken away from them! If we can't *know* a statement is racist, and it can only be said to be *racially ignorant,* it is important not to *convict* that person of racism with a chance of that person being innocent. Otherwise, we are alienating supporters, we are causing people who support us to live in fear of saying one wrong word, we are causing speech to be narrow and ideas to be stifled in fear of social retaliation for daring to even go near any politically incorrect danger zone; hey, maybe Megan Kelly will simply stop talking about racial matters anymore now, congratulations, you've really helped the cause, and let me guess, people will start calling her racist for that now, too! You realize this is a no-win situation you are setting up for people, right? Or is that the point? If we want people to talk about issues that matter to us, we can't jump to conclusions at any little mess-up. *We are not perfect.* And finally, we are giving actual racists ample ammo for recruitment by being so PC! This is not simply respect, it's an unfair and unjust treatment of someone we have no evidence are the things people accuse her of. In all other areas of public life, we see that Megan does have respect for us. Yet we want to bring out the pitchforks for a few racially ignorant statements just because she's a white woman. We have to judge a person's respect by their intent and actions, not by words alone. When someone with Tourette's randomly yells a curse word at us, do we get angry and attack them? No, because we assume that *no harm was intended.* Why can't we extend this courtesy in other areas of our life? Respect goes both ways. Political correctness can be good for creating a society we can all live in, but everything in moderation.There's a total disregard for empathizing with other human beings right now, and this is really really sad. It's really up to us to call out members of our own communities when we see them going too far. That's what friends do. Because again, this hostility is really causing division in society and it will only get worse if we let this over-commitment to PC-attitudes continue.

Dear Meghan, When I was 8, and my brother 7, my sister 6, my mother made us up as a Black family and we won first place in our town’s Halloween costume contest. I was the Father, my brother was the Mother, and my curly haired sister our Baby. It was 1961. My mother was born in New York City, the daughter of Irish immigrants. There was nothing racist about us, at least I don’t remember anything racist. Except perhaps that when we lived in Georgia, colored people had a special water fountain and we white people did not…I was young, what did I know, I thought it was cool that colored people had a special water fountain…so maybe I was an anti-racist? I know what my Mother taught me, that people were people, with never a mention of skin color or religion or ethnic origin. When we get to the day that white people can dress up as black, and black people can dress up as white, and brown people can dress as any one they want..then we will be free of racism. I recall a T-shirt that said, let’s fuck each other until we are all brown…what will we fight about that day?

She doesn't for a second think she's wrong; she's trying to save her ass. This is the woman who declared "Children, Santa is white, he just is" and "Jesus was a white man." This is selective ignorance.

Its hard to take Meghan serious when she worked for fox news and supported their racist views. But it was great to see her use her platform to have Roland Martin educate the white people on how deep racism cuts
@regshawnful
@regshawnful 5 жыл бұрын
I clearly remember her discussion with D L Hughley. Kelly clearly believed that Michael brown who was shot and killed in Ferguson tried to grab the officer's gun and shoot him. She believed that Michael Brown deserved to be shot due to his action. She clearly supported any and all wrong doings of the police officers. If she gets fired I would not shed a tear of feel sorry. She promoted racist views while employed at Foxx News. No matter how much education she receives from Roland Martin she will not change her views towards black people. We as black people must be so forgiven of white people all the time when we are wrong by them. They need to be held accountable.
