Roland RE-201 Space Echo VS Boss RE-20 at

One thing to keep in mind is that the folks at Roland modeled EVERYTHING into the digital pedal, including issues and idiosyncrasies. Any difference these guys noticed, nothing against him, I find it hard to believe they are actually there.

Thanks, bud! And yeah, that OG Space Echo is just unreal. Can't be beat. The pedal version is neat, don't get me wrong, but maaaaaaan... The Roland RE-201 is just so atmospheric. Every note played through it just takes on a life of its own. I really need to get my hands on one some day. It needs to happen!

They can't be compared. The Boss RE-20 is a nice delay, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't capture the full spirit of a real RE-201. Nothing can do that.

Universal Audio's Space Echo ( think it's called Galaxy Tape Echo now) is a pretty legit, dead-on emulation of this classic. Was debating forking over $950 for one on Reverb, but I don't think I'd be able to deal with paying to have it serviced if things go south on such an old unit. In the end all of UA's Unison products are top class and a great addition to the original and digital recreation.

Although it costs more than the pedal, I find my RE 101 (the one with echo but no reverb) to actually be pretty reliable. I’ve had it for a year and used it heavily and have yet to encounter any problems. It’s built like a tank and is much less prone to breakdown than an Echoplex (I had the ep-3 breakdown 3 times in 2 months). The pedal also doesn’t have the preamp that the actual unit has. You can get some unique distortion by driving the input hard. You can get the Echoplex preamp pedal to somewhat get close, but the ep-3 has a different preamp than the space echo. If you have the extra cash, the space echo is worth it.

4:40 ... that spring reverb on the old RE-201 sounds great! I guess from listening to many vids, that could be the biggest disappointment about the Boss RE-20 ~ the spring reverb doesn't seem to try to get all that springiness and drip. However the actual tape delay sounds awesome in my opinion. I still think the reverb on the Boss RE-20 sounds good with it's tape delays but the reverb on it's own doesn't come close to the spring reverb on the original ( However, not I see they had the treble just over half so maybe missed some of the sounds there ~ around 5:48). I'm thinking I'd like to have this. I think I'd not have it on the floor but up so it could be manipulated while playing.

Sold an re201 much to my regret years ago. You can hear the difference between the analog and digital even on KZbin. Tape over digital every time.

The point was just to compare them. Not show which one is better. That’s all up to the viewers to decide. We all have different Tonal preferences, and are all drawn to different things. And yes, I greatly preferred the original, but the RE20 is still a nice delay pedal. I would pick the RE20 for gigging reliability any day of the week 👍

Empress Echosystem has a Space Echo setting. It is really something special in my opinion. But El Capistan will get you there well. TC Alter Ego and Flashback Toneprints. Nux Tape Core Deluxe. And of course a DD-500 has a Space Echo setting.

Im considering the RE20. But also am thibming about a eqd disaster transport or something similar that can get these tones. Any other pedal out there that can nail the space echo tones? DD500? Also I heard it converts even the dry tone to digital. Thoughts? I guess my real question is, would you say the RE20 is the closest pedal out there to the original Space Echo?

Either the mix is too hot or the preamp on the RE20 is so bad it's emanating an unintentional distortion overdrive. The sampling reproduction range of the RE20 is choking the instrument source's harmonics.

Thanks! Yes, recorded with mics in front of cabinets. Can't remember what mics though, since it was at a Thomann event and not at my studio. No, haven't compared a 201 and a 301, but you can't go wrong with any vintage Space Echo unit. They just sound incredible!

What amp were you playing through here, Stefan? Sounds glorious. Even the spring reverb on it sounds 10 times better than most modern emulations. I’ve dreamt of an RE-201 ever since I learned that’s what Jonny Greenwood uses.

Thanks, man! I think it was the Morgan amp, but I'm honestly not sure. It was so hot in those rooms, so my memory of what went down is a bit foggy. If I didn't have the sessions on video, I probably wouldn't be able to remember anything from there 😂 And yes, the spring reverb in the RE-201 is glorious. Actually better than the majority of amp spring tanks I've heard.

Hmm. I'm not satisfied Stefan...sorry. ONLY 12 MINUTES? SHORT! Re-201 is the best of the best. Try to borrow an RV500 and try the Space Echo mode on it. Funny how better then the DD500 tape echo mode, or the RE-20. Ofcourse not the same as the RE-201, but very good. So try it with your sound. (disclaimer: Pass a Big Sky for RV500 becase the space echo mode)
