Lot a comments about the bracelet, but Rolex made their bracelets back in the day to wear light. The whole purpose was to make you feel comfortable while you wear a nice piece. Nowadays watches are way to big, and heavy. In today’s age everyone is following a crowd, like sheep.

Buying a used anything is desirable when the cost is significantly below that of a new one, or if the used one is unique or special in some way. Prices are being driven up and the fun is being driven away by flipping on venues like eBay.

The bracelets were the EXACT reason I never bought a Rolex until the 116610LN, with upgraded bracelet, in 2012. Funny, though: nowadays I consider Rolex new bracelets and clasps to be the best in the business.

Man you nailed it! The pricing of the vintage Rolex is so based on the inability for the majority of watch guys not being able to get there hands on new (direct from AD) Rolexes; so used dealers and grey market guys are encouraging the market to be driven through the roof. I don’t see a bubble pop on Rolex like everyone has predicted unless the economy takes a total dump....

I understand your point although for some reason I still love my vintage Datejust 2 tone 16013 I bought 4 years ago, is true that the build quality does not compare with current examples, but the classy feeling that watch still "oozes" is somewhat mesmerizing to me, now I also own like you an EXP 2 16570 albeit black dial that I bought last year (2007 model) which despite still having the stamped clasp, you notice ( I think this is why you still love yours) the build quality is up a notch compared to 80s and 90s pieces so in a way it represents a transition period or so to speak a bridge that ties the older models and their blemishes with the glories of the newer ones (especially 2010 and newer), just my opinion.

I have a difficult time paying more for a “let’s call it what it is” pre- owned watch than what a new ( better made) one cost. As we all know the high price is a function of the new watch supply. I buy pre- owned because of value! When the supply of new Rolex are available I may .... or may not buy one.

Prices of all Rolexes have sky rocketed. Seems that people will pay almost anything just for the name. The Rolex Datejust is timeless. They were relatively expensive in the 1960's yet not vastly more expensive than other brands. Yet they still hold their value and as Rolex continues to increase its prices on their new watches it pulls up the prices of the vintage watches.

I am not enamored of metal bracelets. I had a now sold Yacht-Master I that I wore on a Rubber B strap and I have a 1978 Oyster Perpetual Date two tone with a champagne dial and an engine turned bezel that I prefer to wear on leather than on the original jubilee bracelet. I like vintage Rolex watches but I don’t like either vintage or new bracelets from Rolex nor from any other brand. For some reason, bracelets are as much a part of the Rolex experience for most people as the watches themselves. For me, I enjoy the watches and not the bracelets so a cheap feel to the bracelet or better modern bracelets and clasps are not a big deal to me.
@michaeledwardlenzi5 жыл бұрын
I do agree with your basic assesment of the bracelets but the Oyster links have a very smooth, almost soft feel to them on wrist. That is the one upside I see on the vintage Rolexes. And yes I have owned a number of them so I am not just trying to defend/justify my purchases. Haha. Anyway, I sold them all and have a modern Datejust 36mm. It too has the smooth, comfortable links and fit but is so much more solid. I love it. I am really glad you are making vids again. In my mind your totally correct. I like an old Datejust 36 I have, but after taking the bracelet off yesterday and seeing the end links I was like...wow why do people pay up to $6500 for these old things. I've seen amazing low cost watches from microbrands and even main stream brands that are less money (like Tudor) that just smokes every aspect of the old watches. The same people that dump on microbrands and brands like B&R, calling them "shitters", are wearing these Rolex 16220's lol If I am being completely honest, these Chinese "homage" units from companies like San Martin and "junk" like that are built even better. In reality you don't have to be a huge craftsman to make a precision part nowadays with CNC technology. Same feeling with famous steel sports watches from the 70's that look great but just a high end implementation of the same old movements. They say "buy horology" but some of the performance of these units is the same as a modern mechanical movement or even less and does it matter the history of the company if the watch is just meh....?

I know exactly what you mean! I almost bought a 16710 Pepsi for my first Rolex, and the first thing that stood out to me that it did not feel like a solid watch. Actually, it felt like it was about to break just by looking at it. The watch dealer then handed me a 116710BLNR and you can just instantly feel that it is built like a tank. The milled out clasp basically pulled me over the line.

Nice analysis, J. Personally, I feel that because both the vintage and modern ceramic Rolex markets are so overinflated, people end up to buying these pre-ceramic “Neo-Vintage” models, as they’re the only reasonably priced affordable option. I MUCH prefer the case designs of Neo-Vintage 5-digit Submariners over the Supercase Submariners, but the 5 digit clasps and bracelets aren’t as good as the ceramics, so it’s a matter of picking your poison. My friend wears a circa 2000 16600 Sea Dweller, and he has no complaints about the bracelet and clasp, so it’s not an issue for him. If only Rolex would sell Super Oyster and Jubilee bracelets with liftlock clasps to for 5-digit model owners.... Keep the videos coming!

Hi J, totally agree. I think there is a lot of hype in vintage and a big shill to push preceived value in old watches......driven by liquidity and resale price ( out with the old, in with the new). Modern movements with technological innovation, modern clasps and bracelets.....just better quality, robustness, and accuracy in modern Rolex. One guy may want to buy a nice new modern Rolex, so really push the vintage value so you can flip your old burnt out Rolex for a much better quality new one. I agree with your assessment of the vintage Rolex market. It's not a very attractive niche and the value is not there. @PeterZandorff5 жыл бұрын
Completely agree on your points with crappy worn(out) vintage Rolex watches. The quality is´nt there at all and the prices has been hugely inflated by "investors" but foremost by VINTAGE ROLEX DEALERS! Rusty dials are called exotic and demands a premium (dealers says), many vintage Rolexes are considered rare (by dealers) even though they were produced by the hundred of thousands, other vintage Rolex watches are described (by the dealers) as coming with "important" and expensive provenance despite the fact that 99,99999999 % of the watches these greedy dealers provide for sale were just owned by anonymous old geezers... And the Paul Newman Daytona watch? A very small and feminine watch (37 mm) which NOBODY wanted in the 60´s and the 70´s and the chronograph watch from Rolex which competed with the Omega Speedmaster for the journey to the moon 50 years ago, a competition the Daytona lost, like it also did when trying to become the OFFICIAL watch during the races on the Daytona race track in the good old days. A real LOOSER watch!

I found an old 60's Turn O Graph in a fairly decent condition. The watch itself was beautiful (even though I could not get the bezel to turn) but accurate to that time the bracelet was fold over links and not solid. What it comes down to is price, and while what they were asking for was about on par with the secondary market, it still seemed too high (at least to me) for what it was, plus the up keep.

Well, the 16710 wasn't built a 10 000 Dollar watch back then, that's why it doesn't feel like one. No one would argue that older watches have better quality than new ones. The design differs (at least sometimes), and nowadays you're paying for availability, that's it.

Well said. I just sold my 16710 Coke and replaced it with a 126710BLNR from an AD. I have a 6.25 inch wrist and the Batman/girl? with the Jubilee bracelet fits perfectly. The new bracelet is way better. That said, I'm keeping my 16610 Sub because the super case and Oyster bracelet are just too big for my girly wrist.
@chillwill1205 жыл бұрын
I have a 16710 that I bought for $7k a few years ago (and even $7k was a ton of money for that watch). I could probably sell it for $9k to $10k. It is a very nice watch but as you say, it doesn't feel special and the bracelet feels cheap - it certainly doesn't feel like $10k on the wrist. In contrast I have a vintage datejust 16220 - a beautiful vintage watch. It also has a cheap bracelet but it's $3k, not $10, so I still think it's a good value.

Ok , mostly agree, the clasps on these bracelets " look cheap " , however, I've had my Datejust since 1983, I just had the bracelet tightened, the clasp has worked flawlessly for the entire time, so regardless of " looks" they work. It's been my daily watch for 33 years. My agreement comes in with today's pricing. The vintage watches come in with prices in excess of the new models. This is simply crazy. I get exclusivity, but there are millions of "vintage" out there, bunches of them cobbled together from pieces. I have noticed though, at one shop I go to , a Coke with a veined dial has been sitting there for a year, as has a Hulk and a Daytona. Im not sure Rolex is selling so well here .So maybe we're getting smarter.

Agree basically because the prices of vintage have become unrealistic. I have owned a bunch of them and have cashed in pretty well. @bloodymarvelous47906 ай бұрын
Nobody complained about those Rolex bracelets until the 6 digit bracelets came out. Those bracelets have held up for 50 years without any issue. They're rattly, but not crap. They are solidly made bracelets that will last a lifetime. It's fine if you prefer newer bracelets, that's only logical. Newer products should perform better than older products, but that doesn't mean older products are shit. The older Rolex watches are lighter, smaller, more elegant, and more comfortable. You don't experience the rattle when it's properly sized and on your wrist, only when you hold it in your hand. I much prefer the look of the 5-digit Rolex watches over the 6-digit. It's a good thing we don't all like the same thing. There's just no reason to shit on things other people like.

well, if new watches have ridiculous prices because of limited supplies, then why do you think that vintage watches, which are MUCH rarer in good condition should not carry higher values commensurate with their supply? the super high dollar watches, such as the Paul Newman, have such colossal value because they have something that transcends the collectible horology - that connection to the famous or historical events makes each one a very special case that almost makes them priceless.

I agree with you I just tried on a vintage explorer 2 and it didn't feel substantial I tried on a 2007 sub and it is not the same as the new ones not substantially like the new subs having tried both and the price of vintage way over priced.

I used to love the newer bracelets but I now do get why the old ones have such charm

I get it you buy a gently used watch for a cheaper price, but this paying a premium for a vintage watch that is arguably worse than its identical looking modern equivalent is insane. And the vast price differences in the same model because one has more lines of text or a number that is shaped differently is also puzzling.

I agree unless you hit a home rung with a great vintage pick up they are mostly over priced. Although I love the coke

One other thing... When you put a vintage Rolex onto a NATO or a Leather strap and it make’s it feel, look and wear better... that’s not a good thing

Funny! A friend of mine who owned a vintage coke gmt said exactly the same thing about it feeling cheap.

I agree. Unless that piece of vintage Rolex piece has special meaning to you, like the birth year watch, vintage Rolex watches are overrated. Even for the modern Rolex watches, I don't see the point of owing multiples of them. I mean, I have a Explorer II and I love it, especially that is the wedding gift from my wife. However, I would not want to own another Rolex since they are pretty much all the same.

The 16570 Exp 2 was my very first Rolex...... just an amazing piece with that cocaine dial..... that's as vintage as I'm going to get.... great video

Two views , charm , history , soul . Vintage are of their time , It’s like comparing a vintage jag to a modern jag . If you prefer good build quality then of course modern is the way go. No right no wrong it’s what floats your boat.

I guess there will never be enough supply for Rolex watches, modern or vintage. All of us want a piece of them but it will never be enough. We will always appreciate things that we dont have and neglect the things that we have beside us.. It will be an endless task in chasing the untouchable for majority of us (me included).

Over-inflated? Overpriced? Over-valued? Obviously not - any commodity (Rolex watch included) is worth what someone will pay for it. That's the true test of value, like it or not. What you have done is conflated the concept of monetary value with your personal preferences and quality assessments. Of course modern Rolexes are technologically superior to their predecessors, no argument about that - but are they worth their sticker price? I don't think so, but the market clearly does, so that's all there is to be said. I can accept your point about these Rolexes being over-rated. Perhaps they are. But overpriced? Clearly not, because people are queuing up to pay those prices!

This is silly. Vintage just isn't for everyone. You must also think that an 80's camero or corvette is inferior to a new model. They are but they are MUCH cooler. It's kinda douchie only liking a brand new watch. Hey go quartz then bud, it seems more like you!

M Tbone it’s not about vintage. It’s about the huge priced Rolex watches which were produced to be used as tool watches.

Finally someone says what I have long believed! Why does Rolex even bother having a MSRP?
@robbiecleighmarks30884 жыл бұрын
Probably just to set a market price for them to use to measure inflation and demand. But yeah totally agree, useless to the consumer.
