Thank you Gail! Another technique I use for serging a rolled hem onto sheer fabric is to first sew a row of stitching along the entire hem. I then use my pressure foot to align the needle position very slightly to the right of my row of stitching. This results in the row of stitching being encased in the rolled hem.

Hi Gail. You have taught me so much! 🥰 Can you tell me how to make a nice corner with a rolled hem? I tried making napkins with pretty wooly nylon but my corners were a mess. I used the left needle to make the hem wider, which looked nice to me on the fabric I was using instead of the right. I ended up going straight up and down and using Fray Check. I’m sure you know a better way though. 🤔
@GailPatriceDesign
@GailPatriceDesign Жыл бұрын
Hi, I roll hem down each edge individually, use Fray Check on both sides of each corner and when it's dry, I snip off the tails. It's next to impossible to get a perfect continuous corner and keep a 90° angle. Believe it or not, your method is the best one. Aren't you proud of yourself? You should be and thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you! The chiffon scarf I was attempting a rolled hem on kept getting smaller and smaller as I redid the hem because of substandard results. The adjustments you suggested made a huge difference, but I've got to say, your recommendation of Stabilizer has made this process even better and much more pleasurable! I did not have the exact Sulky Stabilizer that you showcased. I did have sheets of adhesive fabric-like Sulky water dissolving stabilizer. I thought, why not try it. Fantastic result and the stabilizer dissolved away beautifully. This may not be the most cost effective use of the type of stabilizer that I have, but it was a great "proof of concept". I cut the sheets into 3/4 inch strips (parallel to the long side) and they adhered right to the very difficult and unstable chiffon cut edges. The rolled hem turned out beautifully. Thank you. I have already started on another scarf and I am confident that this one will turn out the full size that I intended! :). Can you use stabilizer in any way for a lettuce rolled hem? Would it help to manipulate the lettuce rolled hem after dissolving the stabilizer? I'll keep a look out for the stabilizer that you used.
@GailPatriceDesign
@GailPatriceDesign Жыл бұрын
Hi Karen,but it is cost effective because you saved your fabric and achieved a beautiful result. And it doesn’t have to be exactly what I used. It makes me happy to know that you experimented with a different product. I’ve never used stabilizer for a lettuce edge, but since I recommend the “pinch and pull” method after the stitching is done, dissolve the stabilizer and then pinch and pull. Check out the video on lettuce edge and let me know how it comes out. Thanks!

Hi Genevieve, If your fabric edge isn't rolling, either the fabric is too thick for a rolled hem or your lower looper tension needs to be increased. Send a pic to my email: gail@gailpatrice.com and I can troubleshoot for you. Also please include what serger you are using and all settings (Stitch length, tension, etc.) Thanks and glad you enjoy the videos!

Do you have a pull out ironing board/table under the table with your ironing pad?-I’m trying to figure out the best way to design an ironing area

@GailPatriceDesign Жыл бұрын
Hi Karen, portable ironing board as well as an ironing "board" covered with padding. It's approximately 24" x 18", but I want a larger one. You can cover a 1/2" thick board to make it and use a staple gun to hold the padding. I can put a wool mat on it for some stubborn wrinkles. Thanks!

Is it wooly polyester in the loopers, too?
@GailPatriceDesign
@GailPatriceDesign 4 ай бұрын
Hi, The wooly polyester is in the upper looper. Serger cone thread is in the right needle and lower looper. The upper looper thread is the one that wraps around the edge of the fabric to the wrong side. The lower looper's higher tension pulls that upper looper thread to the wrong side of the fabric. So when you finish an edge with a rolled hem, always position the fabric right side up. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Hi Louise, The rolled hem is suitable for light to medium weight fabrics. What fabric are you stitching? Your stitch selector should be on "D" and turn the stitch width dial to "M". Here's a link to the Lettuce Edge. Ignore the differential feed and leave yours on "N" and don't "pinch and pull" the edge. Let me know if this helps you. I'll be happy to explore more solutions with you. thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!

@@GailPatriceDesign Hi Gail, thank you for your speedy reply- that’s very much appreciated Yes light weight fabric So I continued to puddle around knowing it was user error not machine. It’s a fabulous machine I found my two! errors 1. While I’d changed the upper looper thread I missed that somehow the lower looper had popped out of the 1st tension disk - this was affecting the width of the stitch significantly 2. A little embarrassing I hadn’t realised I needed stitch length in rolled hem even though the book clearly says “rolled hem range” Once correcting those mistakes, testing it, it worked beautifully. I didn’t like the effect on the sleeve I was going to use it for but did have a tablecloth I’ve been going to re-hem for ever and a day it’s now done and I’m happy. Again Gail thank you so much for replying. If I hadn’t had sorted it I would possibly be in tears with frustration by now!!!!

@@louisejeffries7155 hi Louise, yes and I forgot to tell you to switch the stitch length dial to “rolled hem.” That disengages the stitch finger and narrows down the stitch. How to begin and end this rolled stitch in the round?
@GailPatriceDesign
@GailPatriceDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Caryl, If your garment is already cut to the finished length you can skim off the whiskers. You can also create a "starting gate" by cutting a 2" long notch from the edge. (This is about the length from the needles to the knife.) Hi Clare, Set up your Gloria for a 3-thread rolled hem stitch: right overlock needle, upper and lower loopers with serger cone thread or lightweight decorative thread in upper looper. Stitch width dial on "M" and stitch length on 1. 0 - 1.5. You'll have to test stitch length and differential feed on "N". The stitch selector should be on "D". @@GailPatriceDesign brilliant, you are a star. I was having problems even with stabilizer, the cotton fibre type, I realise it is the water soluble stuff I now need. I have some ancient Avalon embroidery film somewhere in the darkest recesses of my craft room for lace making, although it might have a smooth surface not grippy textured like yours, what brand are you using? I looked at the baby lock manual ,your settings look similar to my fail attempt. no left sheer pull, as you point out, poss user error also a factor.
