If you ever get mad or impatient when you see a emergency vehicles coming and you have to pull over or slow down or whatever, just remember that those guys are going to help someone who's having one of the worst days of their lives (or maybe even dying) and if you're ever in that situation you'd want everyone to get out of their way. That thought really hit home for me the day a car changed lanes into me on my motorcycle and sent me sliding and tumbling down the freeway in rush hour traffic. Thank God I wasn't seriously injured but I was mighty glad when the cops and medics showed up.

First responders include tow truck drivers in my book because they are there on scene before anyone else other than fire, ems, and police. They don't get enough credit for the job they do. It's not as easy as it looks and the availability to respond is crucial because the people needing your service don't have all day to wait and it messes with your money and most people don't care to let money slip away that easy to competition.

Well said and glad you are alive to share the story! I tow for our state police and i try to explain the EXACT SAME THING. We are not there to inconvenience anyone by slowing up the flow of traffic, im there to help get the flow of traffic back to its normal pace as FAST as possible, and as SAFE as possible. And the more they hinder me from getting to the scene, in turn is actually delaying them and everyoe around them. Glad you are okay. Stay safe.

What irritates me the most is when you're running traffic on a bad wreck and/or fatality, and people driving by have the nerve to flip you off for their day having been minorly inconvenienced. Some people need to get over themselves and recognize that there's something much bigger going on than them being a few minutes late to their destination. No one is out there trying to make your day rough, we're just doing a job no one else wants to do, and doing our best to keep everyone else safe from secondary accidents.

No matter how bad you think your day is going, there's always someone somewhere that is having a worse day. When I was 15 years old, I had a Chemotherapy operation on my leg. It made me so sick that l lost 25# in 4 days. I felt awful. There was a child in the nest room screaming at the top of his lungs. He finally stopped. Later, I asked my mother why he was crying and what happened to him. She d=said that he had died. I have never been judgmental on how someone feels since. And that happened in 1959.

I work first response and honestly it's alot less professional and stern sounding as people make it out to be. Yes we keep a level of professionalism and are always fully respectful but if the patient is in a position for a long time and isn't really really screwed. We tend to joke around as other guys are working to remove them from the sistuation. A good smile and laugh is good for all parties it helps lower stress in the patient and reduces longer recovery cause they got in a bad mindset.

Just a reminder for the others watching to remember to slow down, move over when you see lights on the side of the road be it police, fire, EMS, towing, road workers, etc because yesterday while working traffic control the owner of a local towing company was taken out during a secondary accident by someone who wasn't paying attention. His injuries were pretty bad, including a severely broken leg, but he is expected to fully recover.

Ron, thank you for editing your videos. I look at them to see how you solve problems; and they are very interesting. I also watch Svitzer Salvage - also very interesting. Helping my son with his specialized logistics company, I spend hours on the net learning about the trucking business. It has been a lot of fun - so far! We have a four axle tractor towing a four axle trailer with a cargo load of 95,000 lbs. We used a tow once. Someone backed into the front of our KW W900L. We borrowed another tractor, put the broken one on our trailer and a big sign on the side: "CAT headed to the CAT doctor!" But I always appreciate you fellows who are often the true first responders. I have been in that position once, more than 50 years ago, responding to a drowning. It is emotionally tough. So thanks again for the editing.

Everything looks so much more relaxed as in getting everything done safely, efficiently and correctly in your part of the world. I’m a tow truck operator in Australia and everything is so rushed because every one just wants to get out of there so we never have the time to do in correctly on scene. Looks like I need to make a move and start towing in America where I can get the job done correctly and be satisfied about it. I absolutely enjoy watching your videos and love seeing towing from a different part of the world

@MrFredboy 6 жыл бұрын
That's just in his part of his state. All around him it's like you describe, only more for safety than simply wanting to get out of there. People refuse to move over or slow down, and somewhere in the country at least one operator a day dies because they get hit by the dimwit not paying attention flying towards them. Some even pay attention right at the last second, get target fixation and literally drift right into the back of the tow truck, ambulance, cop car, utility truck, wrecked vehicle... etc or into the worker themselves wearing high vis. Yeah, there are fines for maintaining speed and hugging the whole recovery or work operation when you don't have to, and criminal charges if you hit something in that scene even if there are no injuries, but people still don't catch on. Usually it's distraction by cellphone, sadly.

The top priorities at a crash scene are saving lives, providing emergency medical care to the injured and extinguishing or preventing fire. The second priority is protecting the emergency workers while they provide those services but, an oft overlooked priority is clearing the wreckage to get traffic flowing normally again to prevent secondary accidents, which are sometimes worse than the primary crash. I’ve seen plenty of full speed rear end collisions which are frequently deadly. Allowing wreckers and tow trucks the ability to respond quickly makes perfect sense.
@t.t.h.601
@t.t.h.601 5 жыл бұрын
@@stormtracker1 He has lights on his truck(s). Drivers just don't yield to them. If in fact you are a first responder, you should appreciate the tow services which work with the police and fire departments and Emergency Management. You may leave once your job is done, but the police and some times Emergency Management have to stay until the crash scene is completely cleaned up. In Missouri, unless the law has been changed, there are tow trucks which have red and blue lights, are considered emergency vehicles and are first responders. Yes, I have issues with a couple tow agencies my county utilizes, but, I don't disrespect them because they are "just tow truck drivers" or because they are thought of as less than first responders. At least in Missouri, they are allowed to have sirens to get through traffic to get a crash scene cleaned up to get normal traffic moving again. That's more than a lot of cities and states allow.

The FD had to break out the back window on my '79 Dodge Aspen then connect a come-along to the rear bumper so they could draw the seat backwards as I was pinned between the steering wheel and the driver's seat. I sustained a fracture in my left ankle, 3 huge bruises on my chest from the impact with the steering wheel and 30 stitches in my face when my head hit the dash. I was not wearing my safety belt. I learned that in skid pad training in an eighteen wheeler. A skidding tire always wants to lead. Nothing like eighty thousand pounds to teach you that. The San Bernardino county sheriff thought i was impressive the way I slid that truck sideways over a hundred feet on the skid pad. Then pulled it out. Never missing a beat. Then down shifted and went out on the driveway. The scariest thing was later when I had to do it on the freeway in San Diego while Cal Trans was jumping over the guardrail. Later Cal Trans called my company saying they had never seen anything like it and that again I never missed a beat. However they all needed new underwear. God bless

Ivan Ferguson I drove a truck for 15 years, and never drove my truck to the point that I needed skid pad training. I usually just slowed down enough to accommodate weather, traffic, and the unforeseeable! Once, while convoying with two other company drivers, we encountered stopped traffic on the blind side of a curve. The guy up front, locked up and jack knifed! The guy in the middle locked up, slid to one side, ended up on the shoulder, and almost wiped out two cars, that were in the right lane beside him, and forced them out of the way! I slowed down, and watched form the rear!! I wasn't going fast enough to be surprised, was paying attention ahead, around the curve, was the first one on the C.B. to give a warning, the one that jackknifed was a little busy to be talking on the radio! I never locked up, was able to maintain control of my vehicle, and didn't force anyone else to do any evasive maneuvers, to dodge me!! I had a deer jump out in front of me, late one night! I did stab the brakes hard, and caused a wheel to lock, but gave right up when I started to twist, a little!! It was raining, was low visibility, and was isn't an area that a deer was not likely to appear! The driver behind me was impressed with the fact that he saw a little bit of trailer waggle, but it got right back in line as I released the brakes, again!! And yes, I had anti-lock trailer and tractor brakes!! But the trailer still wiggled! Oh, and I missed the deer! A release and reapply of the brakes, allowed me to actually maneuver, not slide out of control!! Once, in Pennsylvania, I was empty, rolling in heavy rain, and on a slick concrete roadway, when the traffic light changed to red! As I started slowing down, I noticed the trailer was coming around me! I didn't feel a thing! I just released the brakes, and steered lightly towards the left, to get back in front of my sliding trailer! It seems as though it was too far around, to get back behind me! But the maneuver worked, traffic behind me saw the problems, and slowed down, and I was able to make a complete stop, in my own lane, but going a little further than I wanted to, into the intersection! I didn't block it, and was on the air horn, even after the truck came to a stop! All was well, and no soiled undergarments!! Was driving the one of the northern Ohio cites one night, in the rain (it's always raining during these incidents!!) and encountered an unexpectedly sharp curve to the left, with an entrance lane to the right, and the large area of painted stripes on the road way!! I drifted into the paint, and lost traction! I would have ended up in full jack knife, in the ditch, on the right side of the entrance ramps, had I not reacted correctly. No brake application, and believe it or not, I turned a little more to the right, to reduce the force into the left turn, and reduce the force on the tires! Luckily, no one was coming down the entrance ramp, so I just made the turn a little bit wider. I did encroach upon the entrance lane, but very little! I steered lightly, stayed off the brakes, and realized later that I had in fact, disengaged the clutch! I don't remember any training for that!! Or that I was doing it! All ended well. With no soiled undergarments! It don't take special training to be able to operate a large vehicle, during extreme situations, if you never put yourself into an extreme situation!! Don't panick, pay attention, and always expect the unexpected!! The telephone screen is never far enough ahead of you, to watch out for the unexpected!! If you have to prop yourself up on your elbows, or a knee from a leg propped up on the dash, don't expect to be able to react to the unexpected, until after you take the time to situate yourself back into a proper driving position!! And wrapping your sandwich back up, and putting back into your cooler, is never a good way to start an emergency maneuver! Emergencies never happen when you're ready for it!! Only when your sandwich is dropping lettuce into your lap!! Drive behind the wheel, eat behind the lunch counter! Sleep in the sleeper, not the drivers seat! When you play Pokemon on your cell phone, it's best to go ahead and park the truck first!!

We have those exact spreader and cutters I love their battery operated. We also keep our older version of cutters and spreads that or hydraulic driven. But by them being battery operated it saves a few minutes and they’re just a strong.

Ron I’m a firefighter of 20yrs and respond to many many calls , the on and off siren thing you do is a horrible habit that could cost you “ car backing down the ramp “ they could have heard you and been looking for your lights . When traveling the “ wail “ setting is for that and “ yelp “ is for traffic and intersections.. just a little FYI .. it’s a legality thing

Boy, how many times have I pulled a car on only to find you've parked on top of your strap! Also great to see you haven't gone all PC over there, in the UK what used to be called an RTA (road traffic accident) now has to be called an RTC (road traffic collision) because you can't be sure it was an accident - it may have been on purpose!
