Rolling Over Shmee150's Financial Disaster - Classic Porsche 914 Restoration

We finally get Shmee150's classic porsche 914 on a rotisserie! (Roll over jig) this is quite the milestone and means we gmcae access all of the car to complete the rust repair!
This car really is coming along nicely and we can now see how much more rust this car is hiding!
It will only be a couple more episodes and this car will be painted! But before that we have a couple more rust repairs to do and custom fabrication on the rear, as well as the under coating to do and running gear!

Tidy rotisserie, weld in some sleeves where the bolts pass through the box section, they will be more secure and will make unit last 👍

Having made my Own Rotisserie, i can Concur how much goes into this. I did take mine a Few Steps Further forward. I fitted to Hydraulic rams, to change th height, a locking Spring loaded Bolt so i can position it in 12 different Positionsand length adjustable. This allowed me to lower the engine out and adjust the height to fit perfectly in my Tiny Garage!🙂 PS You need A Tool Supplier Sponsor. A Chop Saw, a Pedestal Drill and a Decent Set of Drills will really make your Job Easier and Quicker!!

I'm surprised that you fabricate the rotisserie in house and don't have a supplier for them. Great to see how you do stuff like this to make the repairs happen. The underside didn't look (on the screen) as bad as you may have thought, but I'm sure you'll point out all the other points of horror on the car. Thank you for sharing this part of the story.

Hey 👋 Ryan captain yorkshire, oh man you did the finest job in making the rotisserie. That was a lot of work buddy. That looks excellent 👌 👍. That tubular pipe is what I thought about getting to make a frame with for my ol Jaguar. But it would have to be stripped down and put on a rotisserie to fix it properly because it has so much rust. I won't be able to fix it though because I would need a garage etc to fix it. I probably will find me one that is rust free when I can afford to and keep mine for parts..I hope you guys had a good time at the sema car show. Really cool seeing the frame being built, you could perhaps make an adjustable length one with slightly bigger box sections at the bottom so the long section can move in and out of the ends using bolts and holes along it to save having to cut and reweld for each length car

Rotating engine stands make good starting points for chassis rotisseries. A worm gear cable puller can be modified to make an easy way to rotate the car on the rotisserie. Just turn the crank to spin the chassis. I go to my local dump to salvage steel pipe for longitudinal members. A small metal cutting bandsaw from Harbor Freight will make quick work of cutting steel without putting grinding dust all over the place. They are around $300-350 US dollars.

With your rotisserie I had a couple design suggestions and a question or two: First off - y'all need to buy yourselves a good horizontal bandsaw for metal or at least a metal chop saw. Also do you not have a big fixed sander that you could clean the box section ends with, and notch for welding? Also, why not build plates to bolt the casters to and weld the plates to your box steel? Do you have a plasma table? - Plasma tables love that kind of work. Suggestions: in spine of the rotisserie - cut it a feet past the castor on either side: use one size smaller box section for a spine that slides into either end, drill holes, and boom - adjustable length rotisserie. 2. same idea on the upright sections. On the spine again, instead of mounting the castor to the box tube, put a cross piece of box tube, and put two castors on each side - that way should you go with the adjustable center idea - each side is fully supported and unable fall over the castor. Next, for boltholes through the frame - instead of just having the bolt supported by the box tube, drill the hole out so you can slide a piece of pipe (that the bolt will fit through) through the box, weld that tube into the box section, and you've got better strength for the box section, and more area for the bolt to sit in.

I like what you are doing with the rotisserie Ryan but the two bits bolted to the body you can’t get behind now Would it be better for two long bolts and just use a nut on each side with washers and a two inch gap too the body So you can work and paint that metal 👍👍🇦🇺

Nice work, and to me it seems you like welding the rotisserie material a lot more then the sheetmetal you mostly have to deal with. 😊But to me the weakest link in it all seems to be the connection with the car body thats only sheet metal isn't it? But my hat goes off for your perseverance on this disaster of what should become a car again. I would have told Tim half a jear ago since he has enough connection in the US to go and get a Californian body, but then again, whats the fun in that?

I bought a ready made jig, boy oh boy did it take me some time to make the mounting brackets for it !! I was nervous as hell when we took the axle stands out, but like you I had over engineered it The Morris Oxide now spins happily , but I have not had time to do anything to it as I had a Tardis to build for Halloween, now I need to sell it to get some space back !!
