Anyone who thinks that 'Hackney Diamonds' is not a great Rolling Stones album hasn't really listened to it. That's a kick ass album.

@@EdwinCannistraci It's cool. No worries. Some people just don't like The Stones. There's bands that I don't care for that many people like, but it's all good. That's one thing about music that's great. We find what we like and enjoy it. Just like other types of art.

@EdwinCannistraci

@@captainkirk70 I wouldn't say I hated on that specific track. I said it was better than some of the other tracks I did hate on. I'd say it's a mid tier song on the album: there's better, there's worse. But a 7 minute long gospel song that showcases Lady Ga-Ga's vocal prowess over Mick's just isn't what I want from the Stones.

I might not think this, but I appreciate you not overrating it like some Stones fans. "Best since Voodoo Lounge" is a far more reasonable appraisal than "Best since Some Girls".

@@EdwinCannistraci I say best since the bangers on undercover. Now that's an underrated album. At least they were still a band at that point. Mick's hidden solo career put into the 50 million deal was CBS thinking that Mick was going to be as big as Springsteen. When that failed Jagger came back because he couldn't handle his ego being crushed. But in my mind the real raw Stones ceased to exist. Then you got the Vegas style shows. I still would go see them live but I knew there were no lines of coke on the piano and you got the extra musicians on stage etc. Terrible.

Thank you, I had the same impression, although I lack your knowledge, but I am a singer/songwriter myself, don't use anything but real guitars and a Fender Twin. I am 55 years old and I wanted to make the day of buying my last Stones album something special, so I took my bike and drove the 32 km to Cologne in the pouring rain, like I had done in my youth. When I arrived at Saturn's in Cologne, fucking soaking wet, they played the album in the store, so I listened to it almost completely while I moved around. Know what I did? I put it back in the rack and went out with a Guns'n'Roses-album I had missed back in the days. Man, I was so angry, I didn't even catch a cold...

Ever since Sticky Fingers most fans have a problem with the new album and yearn for the “old stuff”. However, over time, the new songs seep into the subconscious sea of Stones songs in one’s hind brain, forgetting where they can from until one realizes that this is as good as anything the Stones have ever done. According to the Stones themselves, they really wanted to make a “solid Stones album”. They all worked hard on this album and had a lot of help in the production excluding Andrew Watt. This albums production is slick, shiny and new, which most Stones fans criticize and are not used to, myself included. However, the songs are very well structured with catchy “middle eights” that provides the song it’s depth and it’s transition to the heightened Stones jam which we have not enjoyed on an album since “Looked What the Cat Dragged In”. The one criticism I do have is that the songs are not in the proper order. Song placement makes a huge difference on one’s perception of the album. Angry becomes a better song if it’s placed deep in the second side instead of the lead song. Live by the Sword should be the lead song followed by Whole Wide World and Bite My Head Off. Sweet Sounds of Heaven should be the albums closer. At 60 years the Stones have amazingly stayed relevant and popular with generations of fans. It’s albums like these where the Stones have to step out of there comfort zone of Chuck Berry’s shadow and walk the tightrope of producing something for the next generation of fans while maintaining their musical blues integrity. As a whole and after several listenings, I think this album rates as solid and It’s Only Rock and Roll.

I listened to it 20 times now - from start to finish. Couldn't believe the torture I was putting my ears through. I also kept reading these incredibly favorable reviews so I listened to the album a few more times. My ears couldn't take any more abuse. But my brain just kept telling my ears to relax and everything would soon be alright. Then - I saw this review. I realize now - that I'm not the only true lifetime Rolling Stones fan that thinks this album is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. My brain has now apologized to my ears. Oh yeah - almost forgot - it was indeed your video that stopped my brain from perhaps doing serious long-term irreversible damage to my ears. I just don't know how long my brain would have continued assaulting my ears. Your video snapped my brain out of it's stupor and saved the life of my ears. I am forever indebted to you. There's some nice musical moments but Mick's lyrics are dismal. High school poetry competition level, which if I wrote, I would be too embarrassed to enter. Just one example of Hackneyed garbage - If you live by the sword, gonna die by the sword If you live by the gun, you gonna die by the gun If you live for the knife, well, you’re gonna get stabbed Run into the law, well, you’re gonna get nabbed If you live for revenge, gonna feel the backlash If you live to be cruel, gonna bite you in the ass. Andrew panned Keith to the left and Ronnie to the right. Different than all the 70's plus records. I feel the production style is very live and immediate like Some Girls was but im definitely not saying its as good. Best since Undercover minus the over the top Mick songs. There are some hidden great songs on Undercover but overlooked because it lead off so drastic for old school fans.

Agree. It’s packed full of catchy songs, covering a variety of musical genres. They’ve swallowed their pride and gone for a young producer, who has given them a much needed kick up the arse. Actually one thing you missed. Mick's lyrics are not only childish at best, but unconnected and strangely verbose. He cannot stop firing syllables, rather than give the music and whatever poetry he can still scrape up, a little ROOM to groove. Quincy Jones said it was the space between the music that mattered (or some such thing) and that was always the classic Stones approach. Here Mick just cannot shut up.

Thanks for subscribing and for weighing-in. Good point about Mick's "word salad" lyrics and the lack of any kind of dramatic and emotional spacing in his singing. This is one of the reasons I made my AI cracks: it's not just that he's auto-tuned to death, but it doesn't even sound like the same mind and soul at work.

As a huge fan, and collecter of Stones Stuff, it's too commercialized, too much hype for REAL fans to enjoy. And way too much advertising for such a huge let down! Maybe I will change my mind, whenever someone gives me a copy to listen to? But it's mostly all about the money and more money! SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THEM FROM SELLING THE BAND OUT!!! WAKE UP! I Saw where their TONGUE LOGO has partnered with a soccer team or game, to sell soccer jerseys at a particular stadium, to be in halves with the BUSINESS OF THE ROLLING STONES!?!?!? I yield to no-one in my love for the Stones, but for me this new album shows the Rolling Stones are done. What we have today is not the Rolling Stones; it is the Mick 'n Keith Show, with the further terrible disadvantage that Keith can't play much any more. Every song on this album is forgettable. Sweet Sounds of Heaven is a sad attempt at gospel by the band which effortlessly did Shine A Light and Let It Loose. Dreamy Skies is a country song, sure, but it simply doesn't compare to No Expectations or Dead Flowers or Sweet Virginia, or even Do You Think I Really Care, which the band left off Some Girls for 30 years! Jagger is a force of nature (even allowing for whatever autotuning took place) but I don't understand the production on HD and they don't feel like the Stones any more. I think they were never the same after Wyman left in 1992, but accepted Darryl's playing because the band still swung, they were still loose. That's gone now. Nothing against Steve Jordan but he's a basher. That was fine for Chuck Berry, but Jordan lacks Charlie's instinctive finesse and jazz triplets. I could go on, but sadly I agree with this review.

Sorry you don’t like the new album but to call it the worst is kind of idiotic The Stones made a lot worse in the 80s I don’t know what you expect from a Stones album but it’s a good rocking album nothing more nothing less It’s the Stones and Steve Jordan does a good job replacing Charlie Charlie picked him personally

Charlie picked Steve Jordan to actually play drums; not to have his drums cut and pasted and pieced together in a computer by Andrew Watt. I wouldn't say it's "idiotic" to think this is their worst album, but we're all going to have our different opinions, right?

Just for the hell of it and because I love HD (hang me now!!), I've compiled a list of my favourite 12 Stones songs from what I believe to be their creative nadir in the studio - 1983 to 2020. Why 12? Standard album length, although there are other tracks I like - it certainly wasn't all bad. Why 2020? The year of their last original studio release (Living In A Ghost Town) prior to HD. I've therefore excluded the many really excellent outtakes from the de-luxe editions of Exile, Some Girls, Goats Head Soup and Tattoo You (e.g., Plundered My Soul, Criss Cross, Scarlet, Claudine and Livin' In The Heart Of Love), because they were originally recorded before 1983. So here goes: Undercover of the Night, Pretty Beat Up, You Got Me Rocking, I Go Wild, Gunface, Anyone Seen My Baby?, Rough Justice, It Won't Take Long, Driving Too Fast, Doom and Gloom, Living In A Ghost Town and Continental Drift. Wot No Keef-sung record? He hasn't sang a decent Stones one since Before They Make Me Run. I look forward to the abuse!!

@@EdwinCannistraci Very suprised you hate it.Worse album ever???? I certainly would say DW to ABB are unlistenable. But Jagger and Andrew Watt are the MVPs. Great songwriting, Jagger's 70's voice sounds amazing but I was just now thinking there aren't memorable riffs except Angry. And people are complaining it was generic. Playing is great just not a strong Keith riff album. But then I can't really think of a memorable riff since Love Is Strong since '83. But im hard on my boys. I think there was much better stuff in the can than got on those albums.Even from the same sessions. Not even thinking about going back and re-recording some of those older fantastic songs. The Some Girls and Tattoo You outtakes alone would have made another classic album.Or at least used some of them and made an album like this one that's about 50 mins. Lots of bad mistakes made.Im guessing it was Mick and Don. Hopefully Don is gone for good. Especially how he handled the new Mick vocals to the outtakes on the Deluxes. You can tell a mile away that they were new vocals when it would have been easy to mix them like the records they came from. The tech is available. Really there's only a couple of Mick songs I like from the "modern" period. Production was awful on all those records. The Keith songs were generally fantastic. The one on the new one is the least of them. That's why I say Micks the MVP. His vocals on Sweet Sounds is side 2 TY great. Makes me want to cry. Lol. P.S. Steel Wheels sucks big time. Lol. How do you get through the slick production and mediocre songwriting. I was embarrassed to play it when friends were around.

Not as strong as their debut but a solid followup that will be in my heavy rotation this month. Pros: Ripper brings a lot of energy and passion vocally and of course the guitar work is exceptional. Cons: cliched lyrics and too many Gregorian chants. If you're someone who has listened to Painkiller more than 100 times in your life and Jugulator more than 10 times, you might dig this album. The Rolling Stones (BAND) died in stages. The first death was when Brian came to the realization he created a monster called the Kieth and Mick circus instead of the band he envisioned, the second death was when Brian was fired. The third death was when Taylor realized circus life was not his bag. The forth death was when Wyman realized the same. The final blow was when loyal soldier CHARLIE passed. There is a reason an album full of blues covers was the best product since the early 80s. Mick can't write a good song from a dry well. He used to be among the finest lyricists in the world, but it's like the devil himself came like a thief in the night and sucked away all his clever ideas. The others acted as enablers for too long. There was one other death stage, it was when Mick did the Martha and the Vandellas cover. I just.knew from that point on the bright light was going dim.

Yeah, I only touched upon this, but it's one thing to do an album without Charlie this late in the game, it's another thing to not honor him and his contribution to the Stones' sound by not even attempting to replicate his style on the album. Like Stevie Young is playing in Malcolm Young's style and thus honoring it IMO. Charlie had a very specific style and it was a big part of the Stones' sound and I feel like that wasn't recognized when making this album (which I thought should've been treated as a tribute to Charlie in the same way PWR/UP was a tribute to Malcolm Young).

Good to hear all opinions, and if everyone rated the same albums as the best, music wouldn't be as rich as it is. One week in, I have to say I love it. The feel, the melodies, its a keeper. Maybe the best since Steel Wheels. I rate Voodoo, Bridges & Bang but Hackney may - time will tell - surpass those for me. Hyperbole is flying in the reviews, agreed. For me it works, and is very high quality. Early days, but it does have the potential to be the best of the 1989- onwards era. Great to see them being discussed and debated so much, whether reviewer likes the album or not. I say give it a try again and then listen to anyone of their recent live shows online. I’ve heard this album on reel to reel and it’s a good effort for 80 year olds.

Thanks and like I said: People want to like the Rolling Stones and they get excited about new music. Ask them a couple years from now what they think and they'll probably be more real about it. "Oh yeah. That album sucked."

@@EdwinCannistraciwell I know your right about the new stones album to me it’s not even the stones it is garbage to me without Charlie it’s not the stones the whole band should retire already they are dinosaurs there to old Mick is 80 now during there last tours Mick lost his voice and the shows were cancelled how much longer will the band continue from the day the stones lost baseplayer Bill Wyman I knew that there was no more stones I thought the band ended for sure no baseplayer can replace bill most people never mention how important bill was to the stones if there’s no Wyman it’s not the stones the stones last best album was tattoo you period blue and lonesome was even better then hackney diamonds in my honest opinion the whole band should have called it a day 30 years ago when Bill left in 1993

Boy you know Ron really handled that Jeff Beck thing I think Ron Wood should do a major tour with his buds like he did the Jeff Beck thing they had all these great amps on stage it was really great except for the fake pirate guy trying tobe a rocker

Your right. This album is the worst thing they have ever put out. If you got to explain these kool aid drinkers will never understand. Andrew watts influenced pop garbage,.Biggest sign it sucks: Andrew Watts gets writing credits WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!. They need his help writing music WTF. I bet he wrote more lyrics than keith. The guitars could have been done by any studio musician. I have to go listen to Some Girls to remind me what rock and roll is. My god, when Taylor Swift is singing with them live in concert what a f-ing joke. Then Black and Blue, Goats Head Soup, Exile, .....So let down.

@@EdwinCannistraci Totally unnecessary, the guy thought of you, as if you were a good person because you were glad that he enjoyed the album even though you didn't like it!
