Fun fact: The song "Gangnam Style" is actually about deepening and widening income and wealth inequality in and around the Gangnam district of South Korea. The general poise Psy has in the song (especially curling the upper lip and engaging in 'neck stretching') are a hyperbolic parody of wealthy subcultures in Gangnam, while the lyrics suggest a satire of extreme privilege while everyone else is ignored and implied to be left behind economically.

I'm Korean and have been a KPop fan since Seo Tae Ji. There are things I never knew about in this video. Btw, black rap was a huge influence on Kpop. I'm glad they gave Run DMC a shout out. I remember in the early 90's, there were a lot of NWA fans in Seoul. I also think a lot of the US servicemen stationed in Korea introduced Koreans to Western Hip Hop.

@@georgetanasa3843 I'm sure if he was doing a comparative piece between South Korea and Japan, he could have mentioned that, but this was solely about the _history_ of Korean pop music. This five minute video is enough to get someone interested enough get curious and do more research, not detail every influence on the industry. However, if someone get interested enough, maybe they'll even look into the evolution of J-pop as well. It's also an interesting topic.

Great Job Ronny as an older Gen Stan it's great for newer Kpop stans and Non-Kpop fans to watch. I'm casual fans of Psy and BTS so I enjoy them but it's clear most Americans think that kpop is new and younger kids think BTS did everything first. Lastly I'd say the best way to really get into Korean music if you don't really get it is KDrama it feels more natural to like a KDrama ost you can connect a story to when you don't understand the culture yet. It's very similar to why we Anime fans like J-rock so much. But it might just be easy for me as I love soundtracks and scores.

I dated a guy from Korea early 90s. I think I still have a mixed tape he gave me, but I don’t remember it being pop. From knowing him and some others from Korea during that time, it left an impression on me that music was really important in Korean culture.
@kentvesser9484
@kentvesser9484 2 жыл бұрын
It is very important. Depending on his age it might have been Korean folk or ballad artists as they were and still are quite popular and many were able to get around the music censorship of the time by doing much like poets and writing lyrics that young listeners understood as critical of the status quo, but censors might not be in tune with. When I say folk singer think more Bob Dylan or Simon & Garfunkel. A somewhat uniquely Korean genre that is very popular is also called trot music, which largely arose during the Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945. The funny thing is that while K-pop is heavily marketed, it isn't what many people listen to in Korea especially among older generations. Even many teens may listen to things other than K-pop or at least they will act like they are "too cool" to listen to it when they are interviewed on TV or by a KZbin channel. Though there are pop groups that get so popular they kind of become the nation's representative like BTS, IU, or Girls Generation, where even grandmas and grandpas know who they are and have likely heard their music.

Like watching an episode of 1 Night 2 Days when they are focused on something about Korean history, but you turn off the sound and just read the English subtitles. :)

Between this and Roy Wood Jr. giving aespa a tour of New York, the Daily Show apparently makes the best Kpop content. I also had to make sure that Girls' Generation was mentioned.

I wasn't there for BTS but for education even if I'm a French who listen kpop since 2005. Plus, Gangnam Style is indeed "a path to cultural understanding." It was the most entertaining way to criticize and parody rich people of South Korea living in Seoul.

The dictatorship wasnt loosened just because one got shot in 1979.. Koreans protested and fought back HARD for another 10 years to overthrow the next dictator. Took a lot of killing, torture and perseverance..

Made, still the greatest album ever released. Every single night, I listen to songs from that album and GDragon's "Untitled 2014". Came into Kpop late in life, broke my femur, went into rehab, was on bed rest for many months. Sister introduced me to kdrama, Watched Scarlett Heart Ryeo, googled Lee Joongi, saw him do a cover of Ringa Linga(Taeyang of BigBang solo),, the world suddenly flipped. Had a LOT of time to research new to me music, still love my Bigbang, still love Lee Joongi, still love Scarlett Heart Ryeo. Differently than lots of other Kpop fans, I grew up in Japan, so Kpop has a nostalgic feel for me. J dramas are essentially what I watched on tv, during my elementary and middle school years. I don't remember English dubbed tv back then, instead I watched long running Japanese tv dramas about volleyball teams, flight attendants and office romances. memories!!!!!

Gundam definitely opened the door. Since psy was in yg at the time Big Bangs mv popped up in the suggested tab. From their Exo, and then Vixx. After that my friend forced me to go 100% and now I'm here still singing along to Loser, and any other group I still stan. (I Love some of the new groups, and songs but there's only so many I can keep up with now as an adult.)
