Disagree on assisting in longevity of the system moving from 30-50 years. 50 year shingles is a sales gimmick by manufacturers that was started by GAF and quickly adopted by competitors so they didn’t lose their market share. They are aware that people in America are transient and most will move several times in that span, voiding the warranty. Additionally most roofs will be damaged by hail sometime in that period making it the insurance company’s problem. Lastly, most contractors aren’t including warranty packages through the manufacturer that would prevent the rapid amortization schedule on the roof making a claim worthless. I’m sure bean counters have determined the tiny percentage of payouts is greatly outweighed by the marketing value of ‘50 years’.

We have personally seen that plastic synthetics that are not permeable is create issues in the Northeast. What is happening is we are changing the building envelope and there is excessive moisture. In conjunction with more energy efficient windows and doors were are trapping more moisture in our homes and not allowing for proper air changes. By going to non permeable plastic synthetic underlayment is now a bigger issue on its own. We still prefer standard 30# (which is typically on the structure building envelope) or a permeable underlayment with at least 10+ perms to allow the excessive moisture to escape and wick through the roof deck. We actually had our own issues around 6-8 years ago that cost us a lot of money to fix a few roofs. The ventilation was 300:1 yet the homes had significant old and mildew issues. After months of testing and costs, it was determined to be the plastic non permeable underlayment that was the cause.

I feel like The only reason we have a 50-year warranty It's because the average homeowner only stays in their house for seven years Corporate scheme. I live in an area with extreme weather conditions cheap shingles shot after 8 years.

If the underlayment is so important why do I tear off asphalt roofs that are 30yrs old with no underlay and no leaks. I get it as a backup but not to prolong the roof

Synthetics haven’t been around long to be proven. With my experience I don’t think there is a better underlayment then 30 lb. Felt. With peel and sticks. They are stick to sheathing for life and often the asphalt shingles are stuck to the ice shield. Not good.

Synthetics along with sloppy installations are garbage. 30# organic felt paper (ASTM D226 Type II) properly installed is the best for many different reasons. Merry Christmas to all 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️

Hyping up a warranty for a roof is red flag, I never sell on warranty and you can probably count on 1 hand the amount of times a manufacturer owned a problem 15 days later let alone 25 years lol are you a good quality local roofer that can be held accountable? You can sell paper towels for underlayment if you can be accountable for it.
