Oatey says not to paint the collar. Especially with petroleum products. Enamel spray paint has petroleum.

you should refine your technique and not leave no nails expose/put nails infront of the collar

In some areas it is code to nail below the pipe jack, and will not pass inspection if they are missing. Great attention to detail coolpast. Also as long as you get a smooth consistent even coat without drips or running, technique can variate to the preference of the installer.
