Wow! This is priceless. We DID have a great QB at one time. My memory went only back to 1985. A lot of the pieces were in place already in 1982. Jim McMahon was my last true sports Idol. This is one of the few high scoring battles back then. So much fun. And we love you Sweetness!

Its all coming back! Totally love your videos about 9. Big qb fan, especially the Thursday nite game against Minnesota in 85'. Spectacular game by him. What he did in 87' was also awesome. Thx for the memories.

Something is missing from this video: all of the passes that barely travel past the line of scrimmage & checkdowns that makes today’s football unwatchable!😂. Thank you sharing this great video. 👍

@@bbigjohnson069 You're right about that. He had a cup of coffee with the Eagles but that cheap shot didn't help. Of course he won that Super bowl on the backs of the defense.

@@johnny1963ify The Bears offense that year was decent. It wasn't like the Ravens with Trent Dilfer. Bears were 2nd in pts. 7th in yards, 1st yards rushing. They didn't need McMahon to do much. And why throw with Payton and that defense. That's the most intimidating defense I've ever seen.
@johnny1963ify2 жыл бұрын
@@bbigjohnson069 I think it was the greatest defense for one year I've seen. The Ravens was close. Both defenses also scored a lot too. But McMahon was a lot better QB than Dilfer.

1:07 At that time, few QBs featured the mobility/accuracy combination that McMahon showed on this play.

Some observations about this game and the Bears was Mc Mahon was a heck of a QB who, unfortunately, just couldn’t stay healthy. Great instincts out on the field. Then there was Sweetness who was his normal spectacular self gaining over 100 yards both rushing and receiving. Then there was the defense. Man, they got lit up in this game. They still needed more pieces to run the 46 the way it was supposed to be run. You start to see the all the pieces coming into place on both sides of the ball.

McMahon's mobility was a blessing and a curse. He thought he could make plays whenever he wanted and often took a pounding trying.

Jeff Fisher with a pick. Payton passes 10,000 rushing yards in '82. If it had not been a strike shortened season of 9 games Bears would have went to the playoffs. I think they finish 10-6. They went 8-8 in '83 and '84-'88 was the 5 straight division titles, well you know what could have been. 1985 being the high mark of SB 20 win!
@SECRETARIATguy2242 жыл бұрын
So without the strike you think they'd have won 10 games in '82?
@camoanddonuts78942 жыл бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 Can you believe 2022 marks the 40th anniversary and the low point of NFL post 1970 merger with that '82 strike season and "special tournament" of 8 teams from each conference in the playoffs? Yes, I believe they win 9 or 10 and would have tied for NFC Central or finished 1 game behind and made the 5th spot wild card and probably go on the road to the 2 seed Dallas where they probably get beat. But it would have given them more confidence in '83 but between draft picks, injuries, etc you never know, just fun to speculate

@SECRETARIATguy2242 жыл бұрын
@@camoanddonuts7894 I don't see it. They were old and slow on the offensive line. They had no speed at WR. On defense, they were farther along but they didn't have the talent they needed to run Ryan's system the way he wanted. The 83 draft was a true bonanza. It's not just easily the best draft the team had ever had, but it's one of the single greatest drafts by one team ever. Duerson, Richardson, Dent, Covert, Bortz, Thayer, Gault, McKinnon [Free Agent signing]. So, 8 guys that ended up starting for that Super Bowl team were added to the team in '83. That's a major influx of youth and talent that wasn't there just a season prior.

The Bears rarely defeat the RAMS in SoCal, but between the missed DEF PI at the goal line and the receiver being ruled inbounds on the long throw from McMahon, they were able to pull this one out.

Did McMahon ever struggle As a rookie?...Seems to me he was very good as soon as he started at QB....Then why does Fields need extra time to develope?....Hmmmmm...Could be an indication he's not nearly as good as McMahon was. Jim's rookie QB rating... 79.9....9 td in 8 games.. TD% 4.3. .Fields 12 games 7 td...QB rating.. 73.2.. TD% 2.6 .Doesn't seem to be a great sign.
