I wholeheartedly agree! Neal is a great artist but he should not change his old artwork in any way whatsoever. We want his 60s and 70s art to be exactly how it was then, and without the garishly ugly bright colors ! And yes, Batman Odyssey was a complete load of garbage too!

Totally agree with every word. The new Swamp Thing Moore run in Absolute Edition is recolored, too. I have the originals and trades already, but it's disappointing.

I remember when someone recolored Berni Wrightson’s Batman vs Swamp Thing, “Night of the Bat”, and it just didn’t look right. The modern colors made the characters look like they were dipped in oil.

Instead of reinking and changing the colors I would not have minded just a black and white version with the original ink work. I had a collection of classic Batman stories that included black and white versions of the original Man Bat trilogy and the classic Secret of the Waiting Graves by Neal Adams. These versions were beautiful and and perfectly captured the dynamics of Neal Adams illustrations! Love your channel! This was a great and thoughtful review!

The Brave and Bold Bronze Age omnibus features Adams Batman work that is unadulterated, but i can't think of any other Deluxe Edition or omnibus that has Adams Batman work that hasn't been tinkered with. I would love to be wrong about this!! I'm unaware of any trades that collect this stuff on nice paper. I think the Ra's stories have been reprinted in original form.

I'm a big batfan and I've been considering the Neal Adams omnibus so as you do, I came to KZbin to take a look at some reviews (and to see if the artwork looked as bad as some have said). I don't really mind the art too much but I see where you are coming from when you say it just doesn't look like a book from its time and looks more like a newer generation book. I would have preferred the art to remain as it was when it was released like I'm sure most people would but how often do we get what we really want from DC? I've took your advice and went with the illustrated Neal Adams volumes to escape that crazy looking Odyssey story (Book 1 came autographed by the man himself and with a COA so hopefully it might actually be his autograph). Keep up the good work. I look forward to watching more of your vids. That rootbeer looks delicious btw.

Thanks for the heads-up. What utter insanity ! He created a classic that shaped the history of the medium and rescued the Twentieth century's most legendary fictional character from the hands of hacks. Then he spent ages and ages meticulously cocking it up, giving it that bland run-of-the-mill contemporary inking style that has put me off reading any modern superhero comics. I guess he didn't like the original ink-job and colours and saw this as an opportunity to put that right .. let me guess: his next project was taking an airbrush to a few Picassos, maybe giving a little depth to those annoyingly flat areas of primary colours one finds on a Mondrian

Great video Jess as always , Great and fair points you made in the video I too have The Batman by Neal Adams Omnibus. I guess since I did not start reading comics until the early 90's I don't have huge a problem with it as other comic book readers do. I have I heard those same complaints and thoughts when the new trade paperback re releases of The Star Wars Original Trilogy Comic Adaptations from Marvel came out earlier last year plus X-Men 1991 re mastered the ones that have the new cover art I'm talking about. With that being said adding the recoloring it sometimes not all the time enhances the art even more. It makes it more appealing to younger readers. In the end, it is all about indeed preserving the art for future generations. So when either Marvel or DC Comics , or even Indie publishers recolors it's older comics for the trades and omnibuses it makes them better a bit not all the time but close to it. Some older fans don't like re coloring a lot of the time but when the colors and issues have degraded sometimes a little recoloring helps. But I agree with you Jess this was not the best example of comic book re coloring. Keep up the great work sir and happy comic book reading !!!

His new inks and colors turned his original work into a near duplicate of The Fourth World by John Bryne Omnibus inks and colors, I kid you not. Met Neal Adams a few years ago. Got the omnibus that day, and he signed it for me. Personally signed it. Really enjoyed meeting him. But it is a shame he went back and redid the artwork. Kinda like George Lucas retooling the original Star Wars Trilogy. Nice guy though! Sarcastic.

The only thing I can recommend is something like a trade paperback of Showcase, volume 6 on Amazon. It's black and white but you still get a real feel for how the original art is so dynamic.

Great and honest review. I love Neal Adam's art as well and have soft cover and a hard cover reprint of this run. But now I'm wondering if these comics are re-inkted as well by Adams. The coloring is the same as you're showing in the video, so they probably are remastered by the master himself. Why I am thinking about Star Wars all of a sudden? :)

Amen! Neil never met a gradient bicep he didn't like. If you check out his 80s Continuity line, you can see the roots of this carnival colorfest disease he festered forth. I would much prefer if ALL of the older comics were scanned from well-printed (on registration) original copies. Herbie by Dark Horse is a good example. And don't get me started on going from newsprint paper to satin or glossy contemporary stock, or my pacemaker might rupture.

The Golden Age omnis are nearly finished so i wonder if they will move on to sequential silver age omnis for Batman. If they do, then when they get to the last one and also the 1st Bronze Age omni (which is the Adams period) i wonder if they’ll leave the original art and colouring.

Based on The Spectre and Deadman omnis i think the original Adams art will be in the late Silver-early Bronze Age books. I don’t think there will be any more monkeying around with artwork!

Man, Jess. One of the things I'm most embarrassed about is at one time defending this recoloring/reinking. You have to understand, at the time I was quite new to comics and was not yet at the point that I liked the way coloring used to be done. To me, this transformation looked more modern, so I was happy. Once I became more familiar with comic history, whether through actually reading the comics or through just gaining knowledge, I became more sour on what Adams did. By the time I finished the omnibus, I felt almost disgusted. What I realized is: you can't make an old comic into a new comic by giving it modern clothes; in fact, you're only diminishing its accomplishments. I didn't realize that at the time, and I remember defending it to you at one point before the omni was released. I certainly have long since seen the light, though. It doesn't help that it's a BAD modern coloring job, too.

Extremely helpful video! The recoloring is horrendous and it’s a travesty that Adams messed with the art. Marvel seems to get it with their epic collection- coloring similar to the originals and using a cover from the original run as the cover of the collection. DC, however, seems to have awful photoshop style recoloring on its reprints. And they have baffling cover art. I bought a Green Lantern silver age collection which, thankfully had colors similar to the original- but, oddly, it had some cartoony image on the front! She m buying it because I want to see Gil Kane artwork! If I wanted to see cartoony Green Lantern I would have bought something else! Same with the Neal Adams stuff. The marketing department is so convinced the art work “has to look modern”, but the very audience it’s intended for is turned off by it! And then, when sales are low, they probably go “oh, I guess there’s no demand for old Neal Adams Batman.”

Hey I was lucky enough to run into Neal Adams and his wife. I have to say both were very warm and charming to everyone around them. He kidded around and shook hands with everyone before he sat down to do signings. I can see people being upset about recolorings, there should be a disclaimer when it's done. But your average person loves shiny glossy pictures, that's what sells.

definetely like the old colors much better, that batman blue/gre/purple is just so iconic for me from back in the day. But I red somewhere it has also to do with how printing changed etc... so it might have been a necessary thing to do. :( But Neil is still BY FAR my faivorite Batman artist. Am glad I still got the originals from the 70s that i bought when I was a kid!

You're so right about how they loused up all the imagery for these reprints! I didn't even know that Neal Adams was personally responsible, but it sure doesn't help anything. I had volumes 2 and 3, the thinner excerpts from this same omnibus, and I returned them to the sellers because I was so unhappy about how they screwed up and totally changed how cool the art was. And I got these used off eBay I was lucky that the sellers agreed to take them back and give me refunds. I think the thing that annoys me the most with the computerized coloring is they try to put a white highlight that subtly Fades away on every single thing that light strikes. It so draws attention to itself for its total artificiality, fakeness, and crappiness. I'm so lucky I have some Neil Adams reprints from the era before anybody screwed them up and changed them in some treasuries and greatest Batman stories Ever Told, I better hang on to those. So you're so totally right on and you like root beer? You are pretty cool man

I agree 100%. The problem with Adams is he is not a writer if he was a writer he would be getting work as a writer but he doesn’t because he can’t write. Second thing is the writing on odyssey makes no sense it’s like a bad Doctor Who plot what is he thinking? His writing is comparable to 1950s Batman books on a good day. Now when it comes to the art he’s pissing on his own legacy by redrawing and bad colouring and monkey facing some of his art, it is embarrassing on his whole history and career. But fans seem to flock and pay for his current portfolio, shame.

You are totally right about the colors, I wasn't even close to being born when he drew this stuff but I feel it loses it's appeal of being classic with the darker more bland late 90's early 2000s coloring job. Regarding his Batman stuff post classic era I actually enjoy it. It is extremely dumb and ridiculous but I think Neal's enthusiasm makes up for the flaws of the work.

This reminds me so much of George Lucas tampering with Star Wars. Neal Adams is one of the finest comicbook artists of all time, maybe even number 1. This hurts. I agree with you on almost everything. Except this: Giordano is a great inker, but Neal is better, especially inking his own stuff.

@@etrx87 to my knowledge it's only the absolutes. The original coloring is very foreboding and atmospheric and sets the stage of spooky swamp. The new coloring is bright and clean and while I can't knock someone that prefers it, it takes the sweaty atmosphere away from the OG.

People talk about how Frank Miller went off the deep end after Sin City, but Neal Adams is certifiably insane in terms of writing, and always has been. BM: Odyssey and his recent Deadman mini are like the fever dreams of a deranged schizo. His writing in the 60s and 70s was tightly edited (that is, rewritten to be intelligible), but he has so much clout now that he gets unfettered creative control.

Agreed. Neal Adams is my FAVORITE comic book artist, but I will never get the omnibus for all the changes that were done to those classic stories. And they less said about Odyssey the better. I don't even look at the Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams anymore because of his coloring and his inking over those stories which are not just garish but outright bad. He just ins't as good as he was back in the day. Dick Giodonao was the Perfect inker for him (although Tome Palmer is a CLOSE runner up, See their X-Men/Avengers run) Although I will say that when he did ink some of the books back in his prime they were pretty good and gave a "darker feel to his pencil than Giordono style ( Brave and Bold # 93 'ed Water/Crimson Death" is a perfect example of this. Thank goodness i still have most of the original comics that were collected in decent condition.

They should at least tell you on the cover how it was reinked and recolored, but, it makes it looks like a 90s Image Comic when it's supposed to be a 70s comic. It's like when they remade Psycho scene for scene, everything felt out of place.

There isn’t any version out there with original colors, is there? I’ve been looking for a long time. The recoloring sticks out like a sore thumb, especially next to other art from that time (ex: Detective Comics 80th Anniversary.) I wish they’d just release a version with the original colors... the O’Neil/Adams era of Batman is probably the most definitive to me, it’s a shame there isn’t an option for purists

I'm hopeful that when they get to the Silver Age era omnibus' it will be the original material. Some of the original material can be found in the Brave and Bold omnibus that was recently released but those stories are generally not by O'Neil

I also hated this omnibus. I didn't mind the recoloring so much...but "Odyssey" was so godawful that I sold this omnibus as soon as I could and opted for the 3 hardcover volumes instead.

Yes I agree readers should have the original reprints - are they available elsewhere? I agree but Odyssey I don't agree with - I thought it was deliberately over the top on Purpose. I also agree they should have emphasized to readers not familiar with the originals the re- inking etc.

The last Neal Adams stuff is very peculiar! I must say I like it. Its wild almost surrealist. Like silver age comics on crack. Adams was a strange guy and DC just let him do whatever in a small handful of books. Fascinating!

John that’s a great question. I’ve only been able to find the original stuff in the Brave and Bold omni 1. Otherwise I think we have to wait for late period SA omnis. Also a few stories in Tales of the Demon are untouched

Yes, DC pays him to reink and recolor everything he produces in collected editions. That's part of his stipulation for reprinting collections of his Bronze Age work. His Silver Age work was produced WFH and he gets less of a say in how that's packaged (which is why his Spectre and early Brave and the Bold omnibus work has not been redone.)

I DON'T like the way Neal recolored some of those issues. In my opinion, Tom Palmer's inks were the best for Adams, so you have a point. A man's gotta know his limitations.

I am with you on this. Was the original colouring perfect? Nope. Do I still want to see it. Yes! I want to see a slice of history - not modified history. I recently saw the new colouring for Alan Moore's Swamp thing and was upset by the changes. And so many times the changes and updates don't objectively "improve" it, they make worse choices than the original colorist.

Those pages were terrible, I never understood how much Giordano added to the final result. Great video. Omnibus is awful and tacky looking. Overthing overcooked/saturated. Huge error by Adams.

Is it the reinking or the recoloring that bothers you most? Personally I like it, but -- it seems like he could have done it better.. it's like he was trying to keep it looking like the original.. would have been interesting if he just reinked/recolored as if it was done today. Altho, I don't personally own this book as it's now going for kooky prices How do you feel about Walt Simonsons Thor? That was recolored. You seem to not be a "purist", not knocking the recoloring just because it was altered.. so curious The limited color pallete of the old silver/bronze age stuff gets on my nerves after awhile, it seems like yellows and blues are overused.. I'm all for recoloring (when it's done well)

while I agree that Batman: Odyssey is a bit 'busy' with too much detail. I respectfully disagree with what you say of his redo in the Omnibus. I'm not as jarred as you seem to be with the recoloring. And, yes while it isn't 'necessary' to redo the colors I dig the work Mr Adams did. And by golly, at least he still has passion for the character.

Recoloring can be helpful on occasion but to me, from what I've seen, it just taints the artist's legacy. And takes away the impact that it had at the time their respective stories were published. You saved me from spending my money on this. For that you've got a new subscriber.

The originals should always remain in print. If Neal wanted to enhance them (to make the art not look 'dated') DC could have instead offered a 'remastered' version to go along with the originals. I would definitely have bought both versions.
