Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I believe i remember you saying that Miah is a disabled military Vet. You should look into an Access Pass through the corps of engineers campgrounds. Youll get 50% off campground stays at any COE and theyre all over the country and in SC. You just need to show his paperwork showing hes disabled and youll get a card that doesnt expire. Its been life saving for camping!

I believe children of service members only receive benefits up to a certain age and/or depending on guardianship of the service member. So if your parent who is/was a service member is no longer your guardian (as in you're a grown adult/responsible for yourself or someone else is responsible for you), then you won't receive their benefits anymore. Versus when they are your guardian, you benefit from their benefits. It's not something the children of the service member get to receive forever, there are limits, I'm just not entirely sure what they are 🙈 I should probably know this and do some research since my husband is in the military and retiring soon 🤦🏻‍♀️😆

Our family has so many wonderful memories of camping. Such a very special time with all the kiddos. Now, all of kids are all grown with families of their own. Last year we were able to have our great grandson come along. Y’all are building memories for a lifetime. They may not realize it now but in years to come they will sit and talk about their times camping as a family. God bless you all Jess.❤️✝️🙏🏕️

Awesome visit with you while you did extensive planning for your weekend! I find the food items to bring are the hardest part of camping! Our RR is much smaller so I don’t care to do much cooking in it & my kids are grown now but sometimes we take a grandson along. Oh to be young & energetic again! Many blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦

Watching you work a farm makes me happy I left Searcy Ar. to join the Navy and make it a career. Farming is to much work … at least you have electricity and tractors and other machines. We had 186 acres on Joy Mtn. With a few mules and horses to pull the plow and other implements. Plus you don’t have to constantly chop wood to heat and cook with. You guys are way better at it than I was!

As a new generation or homesteader, I thank you, #Chrisdvd, most sincerely - for helping to pave the way for us. My Mother's family didn't have electricity (or AC or refrigeration or hot running water indoors) until my Mother was 14. So I must say I get little sympathy for all my hardships, I tell ya. When I'm telling her I want a 12' x 36' real-life tiny house on wheels and about 5 acres land (with or without electrical power 'tree' hookup) she's excessively certain I've gone way around the bend. Lolol. I can only see half the screen on this cheap broken device.

If you can tolerate long fermented sourdough, there are a lot of old northern European recipes that use breadcrumbs instead of flour for everything from thickening sauces to pie crusts. Magus Nilsen has some great Scandinavian recipes in his books and there are also great medieval recipes using breadcrumbs basically instead of flour - if you've worked with old coarse flours before it makes sense they wouldn't have wanted to use them "raw". It may not always be worth it, but they're way more versatile than what we generally use them for now, making them as needed with a grater was a game changer for me!

We are empty nesters now but when the kids were home we camped a lot and we had 7 families that all traveled together. To this day all of our kids still talk about camping and now that they are having kids of their own they talk about the next generation of camping. Blessed memories of family time, having our own worship service in the campgrounds, bike rides, fishing, etc.. Your kids are blessed to have parents that are willing to take the time and put in the work it takes to camp.

Loved this video and am catching up as we too were gone in our RV. We went to watch the Eclipse and had an amazing time with friends in Indiana with fantastic weather in the line ot totality. We travelled full time for 3 years in our RV, visiting National Parks and have made it to 42 states, making so many fantastic memories along the way. We've recently slowed down and have a homebase near Asheville, NC which is now allowing for some gardening. But boy is the struggle real.....my love and passion for travel definitely battles my desire to homestead. I truly enjoy living vicariously through your expeiences and learning so much. Thank you for all you do!! And hope you had (since this will be after you are back) an absolutely fantastic time camping. BTW...if you haven't been to Lake Jocassee (Devils Fork Campground), it's worth the drive and is our favorite in SC.

This so resonates with me...I started my tomatoes and peppers and herbs 1 week before thyroid surgery! Plus we're bottle feeding 3 baby doelings(first time goat owners) and planted 2 beds of onions the night before surgery. Why did I think March was a good time to have surgery?! 😂 Now, almost 3 weeks later...I'm still trying to regain the energy I need to do all this. 😅😅 Did I mention we have only 2 garden beds built on this new property....out of 14. Gah! I'm an idiot.

I've noticed you have had the farrier come out a few times to trim the horse's feet. Have you thought about calling your vet and getting him to check to see if your horses need to have their teeth floated? It's not a hard process. What happens is your horse start getting sharp points on their teeth, and it will start cutting the inside of their mouth. So you float their teeth. Meaning, a vet has a tool called a dental float. All it is is a long metal file and the vet smooth out those points on the teeth, and it will help an even grinding pattern to help digestion. A horse teeth never stop growing, so floating is a necessity. Anyhow, like always love your videos. Keep'em coming.
