Portishead's debut album "Dummy" is a mix of muffled bass, slow hip hop rhythms, humming Hammond organ and obscure samples. Portishead is the epitome of "trip hop". Beth Gibbons' plaintive, cinematic vocals give the album an unreal atmosphere. "Glory box "is the best-known track, but the whole album is a tripper. Thanks!!!!

I've had a weird sort of sad sort of melancholy day, let's end it with some Portishead!!! I remember buying Dummy at my local Tower Records when it just came in and the clerks were playing it over the loudspeakers. Picked up Nighttime by Killing Joke as well...

Dummy is one of my all time favourite albums, I grew up in the 90's and Portishead were integral in the soundtrack of my youth. I saw them play live at Bridlington Spa theatre in the mid-90's, they were excellent and we even got to meet Beth briefly afterwards as well, she was lovely. I had a massive crush on her at the time as well but I don't think she could tell, I was just relieved that I managed not to make a complete tit of myself somehow.😊

Love it...when the came out, they couldn't figure it out...hip hop with dance stuff and musicians...so they named it...Trip Hop! Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, they created their own genre!

God bless trip-hop and Portishead. ❤

Portishead one of the top bands of the 90s - Trip Hop personified, just nasty beats and dark moods and her incredible voice gliding through it all. Their entire first album "Dummy" is near perfect. This concert is legendary. Was hoping they'd make your way to your channel, this was a treat!

Oooh. Talk Talk is a fun rabbit hole! I definitely recommend pulling on that thread. Anything off of Colour of Spring will do! And Strangers is such a banger. Would have been an awesome opening track for a James Bond movie. Portishead are awesome! Welcome to Trip-Hop!

Ha ha, loved this reaction. Just your facial expressions alone, no words required.

Prior to Portishead, had anyone ever tried to combine electric James Bond guitar, an orchestra, scratching, keyboards, etc? Trip Hop is an amazing medium bc everything is possible.

this whole concert in NY with the orchestra backing them is fire, like every song. worth reacting to more from this show.

any song from them is fire, can't go wrong. I suggest Roads, from the same live performance.

You literally cannot go wrong with Portishead. Better to start from Dummy chronologically, but all 3 albums are nothing short of brilliant.

Trip-hop... And it's identical to the album if you want to treat yourself to an amazing record... Then binge the CD "Dummy"... You'll be a happy man 😘

Good pick up - Portishead are heavily influenced by film noir and like to incorporate a lot of that style of music. Their second album sounds even more that way.

plus, Beth Gibbons, the singer, she's a cool cat. Her solo album is another fire album. I put her up there with the greats (nick cave and the likes)

And keep in mind this was in 1998. Mindblowing good and away head of their time.

I enjoyed your reaction almost as much as I enjoyed first seeing this in the cinema years ago. The original track is great but this performance is off the dial.

New to your channel because I saw Portishead, who doesn't get enough attention imo, and the Rory Gallagher pic sold it for me. Like and subscribed. Check out "Hi Ren" by Ren if you want something else that's really different.
