I bought these (in smooth, black leather) as my first pair of boots a few months ago. I was hesitant dropping this much on footwear, it was my first time paying more than probably $80 for anything I’d put on my feet and I was really skeptical it’d be worth it. People complain about Iron Ranger comfort, etc. My guess is those fellas have too many boots. Buy the Iron Rangers, (get the right size), WEAR THEM EVERY DAY, break them in, and they just get better and better as the footbed forms. I don’t understand how you guys get so much lifespan out of them. I just walked though my second pair of iron rangers, bought them in May and wore them almost everyday working 50-60 hours a week doing hvac service/install. Sole stitching on both sides of the “ball” area of the soles is worn away and the sole is starting to separate. I spend a lot of time crouched/squatted/duck walking which I know contributes to the wear, but I can’t buy another pair after this second one has gone so quickly.

I've had a pair of the Amber Harness Iron Rangers since 2016, and they're still going strong! When I first got them I wasn't really aware of proper leather boot care and wore them every day for over 6 months through rain and all sorts of conditions hiking too. The heels started coming un-tacked due to the rand disintegrating. A local cobbler was able to replace the rand and heels. The insole also started curling up around the toes. I later had a full bottom down rework done on them, new insole, V100 lug sole with a leather midsole and storm welt and they are fantastic. My go-to harsh weather boot. I now use cedar shoe trees with them and let them dry out if they get wet.

I feel like they really are the best boot one step below the PNW boots and with the cobblers around the world who will resole or even recraft, they are probably the best heritage brand model in their niche. That being said, I think a lot of newcomer brands like Grant Stone provide a lot of the other styles with similar level of quality and rebuildability for long life. I've used my iron rangers HARD working on the gravel train and a lot of the time the boot being wet, Broke them in a week or two wearing them for 10 hour days and they are very comfortable still. The sole did wear faster then I expected but I think that is from wearing on gravel constantly. The only thing that has happened was the front goodyear welt is kicked up a little due to me kicking something and I think the front of the sole has started to come up a tiny bit due to me being around water alot. So this is a review from someone who used them for work and did not baby them wich seems to be rare with these for some reason.

I have had my pair of Iron Ranger for around 10 years now and have loved them. I log with them, poured concrete in them, framed homes and pack hunted with them. The boots can take the beating.

Have 2 pairs , copper and amber. I only bought the second pair cause I sent my 3yr old pair to get the soles replaced with rubber lugged soles for more grip working in wet conditions. I would go through cheap (120 -150 ) work boots every 6 months , so I'm happy I have boots that last so long and can be resoled.

My dad bought me a pair of Red Wings Rangers to wear quail hunting with him when I was in Jr High (late 70’s). He bought them too big so I’d grow into them 😂. His only instruction was to use mink oil liberally/often and clean when they got muddy, which is the only way I’ve cared for them since. I don’t know many pair I’ve owned over the years, but it’s a lot. I’ve resoled several pair but usually buy another pair after the resole wears out. I only wear while hunting or working on the farm or ranch these days. I’ve NEVER had an issue and they’re surprisingly comfortable for work boots. Over 45 years later, I’ll keep buying Red Wings.

I adore my 8111 Iron Rangers. The mid sole (or lack there of) as you mentioned, leaves a lot to be desired. I think another layer of veg tanned leather would be awesome and bring the value of the boot higher. That aside I think the boot is fantastic and I would definitely buy another pair.

I’ve had the black harness Iron Rangers for 3 years now. I had the mini lug sole changed out to a Vibram v-100 lug sole. They fit like an old glove at this point. A little conditioner and a brush here and there and they still look as great as when I got them and can see them lasting for years still. So, when taking that into consideration I feel that they’re a good value. Thanks for the great reviews as always!

I have had about 4-5 pairs of iron rangers over the years. Currently only have two left. The Amber Harness and Black. Still some of my favorites to this day. Considering they were my first pair of "real" boots. Glad to see they're still constructing the boots with the same quality materials they have been using. Lately I've moved on to the PNW brands. First pair was Nicks Builder Pros. Next was JK OT boots. Just got my second pair of Builder Pros in. And waiting on a pair of Superdutys and Forefronts from JK as well.

Using my Iron Rangers since 3 years for motorcycling. After all this time and around 35.000km of motorcycling, travelling over three continents and walking A LOT (even high mountains in Mexico) and riding horses, they still look like new. But I clean them once per month.

I got my pair of 8111s back in 2015 and all I can say is that they have aged like fine wine. And yes the heel stitching does wear out over time.

I have the Red Wing Chelsea Ranchers and can definitely confirm that the uncovered stitches in the back are a wear spot. However, it took 5 winter seasons to wear through the thread. So it is still durable. But a counter cover would be even better.

And those stitches can be reached and replaced by the owner. I'm a big fan of anything that can be properly repaired. Fed up of cheap tat. Buy once, buy well. I'm adding a pair of Chelsea Ranchers to my collection, it's almost impossible to find actual shank supported hand made Chelsea boots for under a grand in the UK these days most under 500 are either formal Chelsea boots for suit wear or glorified sneakers. I bought 5 pairs of Doc Martens steel toe capped safety Chelsea boots for my employees 3 years ago, they were expensive, uncomfortable and because they have no shank, gave no actual support when on your feet for a whole day, my company were Gas well roundabouts. I moved onto Solovair safety boots, which of course are what Docs used to be. But I think a pair of Red Wing Chelsea Ranchers for the boss might be the ticket! 😊

Have an Iron Ranger and 1907 Moc Toe. Love both pairs. 1907 has slightly more room in toe box and slightly more cushion with the leather insert. Iron Ranger is the classic depression era forward American heritage boot IMO.

I will get another pair before these need refurbished and rotate them, for the rest of my life. They are worth every nickel.
