Roxy Music - Avalon - Album Review and Discussion - States & Kingdoms

Roxy Music released an epic album in 1982 - Avalon.
Full of imagery and evocative instrumentation, gorgeous melodies and the virtuosic singing of Bryan Ferry, Avalon is just an absolute classic.
One of those albums that you can listen to over and over again, and it just gets deeper and more beautiful.

One of my top ten albums of all time without a doubt. Atmospheric, lush, evocative, beautiful and transcendent. The songs flow into each other seamlessly from start to finish. One of the best nights of my life was seeing Roxy Music on their reunion tour in 2001. The band played everything as if it just came off the album or with even better subtle stylistic flourishes. Bryan Ferry changed outfits 3 times and looked and sounded flawless. Even the light show was a perfect compliment to the music. This phenomenal combination of sound and visuals prompted me to tell my GF that we had just witnessed perfection....

Greetings from Germany. I'm pretty sure and convinced that "Avalon" was one of the best records I have ever had on a trip towards sunset. It is a pure 80s vibe but without being cliche and not that sexual and cheesy as many records of that decade have been. Atmospherically, it sounds so mature like when you have a long night with a lover in a truly romantic manner. A true representative piece of adult contemporary music.

Avalon is a very special album to me and opened my ears to the amazing band that is Roxy music like David Bowie's let's dance a year later these are the gateway albums that made me a lifelong fan of these amazing musical legends

That was an interesting time in Rock music. Other bands were coming out. Human League, the Thompson Twins, The Clash, Adam Ant were all coming out at that time. U2 was not on the scene yet.Other bands like Mr.Mr., Crowded House, were all coming out at once and bands had to find out where they fit in.

Great band and album. Been listening to Ferry's 'Boys and Girls' a lot recently, which I guess is the next step after 'Avalon' and an album that doesn't seem to get its dues for some reason or other. Love the video guys - keep them coming!

Hi from England. Been a Roxy fan since '72 and consider myself fortunate to have been on their entire journey. I do think Roxy are under-valued maybe in the US mainly? I do wonder though if they are now becoming more appreciated. Thank you for such an insightful review. The earlier stuff is far weightier though as you said. The first four albums particularly are simply outstanding. It's difficult to believe that the first album - which I have the 50 yr old original of - is 50 yrs old and yet is still so fresh and innovative. BTW sadly the Avalon vocalist Yanick Etienne passed away on 30th March, 2022. :-(
