I saw him at Clare College Cellar in 1987, Cambridge. His mike stand was a christmas tree of joints, a couple of which he smoked. After the interval he was so stoned he could hardly make it down the stairs. But his performance was absolutely perfect. Talented, talented man.

Indeed - quite a concert. I saw him twice there (85? and 87) and hearing him on Handmaid's Tale brought 1980's Cambridge music jarring back. The Bible! , playing cricket with Andy from Andy's Records and Sunday nights at Clare ...

Not sure what all the comments denigrating his voice are about. It's not going to be in the same key as when he was younger -- naturally. For what this is, it's fantastic.

Just beautiful. I can't believe he could do it better than the original studio version. This is totally moving. Great upload thanks.

Absolutely beautiful! I personally really like the other guitar part. It adds another dimension to what is already an amazing song.

thanks, Jon, for this. certainly some innovative video production here, and another , perhaps often forgotten, Harper classic, is given a fine airing. "Britain's greatest living beatnic" for sure! thewordofgord

I am the same age as him. I loved the raw feeling of the original when we were both young in the 1960s. This is just an old man singing his past glory - sorry Roy. Listen to Joni Mitchell singing "Both Sides Now" in her latter years - it takes her wonderful intuitive but naive lyrics sung in her 20s and makes you realise she wrote the truth listening 40 years later.

@eddypfunk He's got the bottom E tuned down to B flat so intonation can't be perfect, but that's part of what makes this an amazing version!

'How does it feel to be a voter' - Best lyric ever. I used to wind my political mate up with this line and he'd say 'Well, if he doesn't want to live in a democratic' and I'd stop him there and say SHUT UP.

At least John Martin went out with integrity which is more than Roy Harper ( who was my all time hero) has done. I'm really disappointed and that's an understatement.

What are you talking about?
@StormOneUK7 жыл бұрын
Yeah what are you on about Pat.. John MARTYN "went out" dying of self induced illness poor bastard was morbidly obese and wheeled onto stage in a wheelchair for his final shows is that what you mean by integrity? Or are you referring to the historical abuse charges Harper was ACQUITTED of? Obviously if he had been found guilty of wrongdoing, that would a shame, but what's more disappointing is an innocent man in his twilight years being tarnished, put through the mill, no doubt an ordeal for someone of his age, without being properly vindicated in the public eye after he was cleared of those charges. It really upsets me that a frail man in his 70s should have his reputation damaged, just as he was gaining wider appeal and accolades for his work.
