Roy: Jab to Bair Tutorial

For anyone coming back to this video some corrections and better advice: - For input, instead of RAR or Attack Cancel, I recommend using the slingshot input. I alluded to it in this video w/o understanding why it worked so well. Learn about how to do it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKiUhoiIi76UhJI&ab_channel=GimR%27sLab - Somewhere in this video I said you probably don't need the Full Hop version. That is false. While the Short Hop version has a pretty large window, as Roy learning the full hop version is essential. Otherwise, you'll often be getting the sourspot. Practice both versions on multiple DI if you can. - Small/Light opponents can DI away and make the window small or almost impossible to hit. Larger bodies can do the same but will at least get hit with the sourspot. Jab is not a move you can really react to so if they get the right DI, they most likely were already DIing away or read the jab early enough to DI. - The window for a jair is very large not counting perfect DI. If you get the full hop version down you, can kill as early as 80 and as late as 140 (character dependent). - Jab>Nair might be better near ledge at higher percents... (140+) Things that I mentioned that I do recommend following: - Control setup (trigger jump and tilt stick is optimal for Roy imo). However, if you're comfortable with your current control scheme and find it easier, stick with it! Find what works for you. - Breaking it down into parts/slowing things down is really good. For newer players/less experienced players, you're not going to be as comfortable with some of the inputs so making sure you can do each part individually then putting it all together is really important I'm surprised how popular this video got, thank you all for the kind comments!

I don't know why my RAR is consistent without the jab. And then with it, it becomes inconsistent. Also, I struggle to do a true combo with that.

So something that helped me was thinking of these as two separate inputs first. Don't worry about it being a true combo, just do it as fast as possible while still being consistent. practice it while thinking about both inputs separately. Start tightening the timing between when you do the jab and when you do the bair. Eventually, it should be seamless and almost like a single input.

You probably dont need this anymore but ill say it for if anyone checks this comment looking for help. As OP advised, its better to do both as separate inputs. Ive also always been a god at RARing, much less when raring out of jab. The timing is way too tight when not already running, so taking some time to let the initial dash come out before RARing and then practicing while tightening the Jab and the RAR is the way to go. I have one of the shoulder triggers set to jump and use the C-stick (set to tilt) to do the RAR with more ease. I think that is the best control scheme to make RARing more intuitive (not to mention that the shoulder button makes short hopping second nature).

You have to wait for the end lag of the jab to finish before the RAR that’s why it’s harder to do both together. And the jab end lag is even longer when hitting an opponent so that makes it even harder

For anyone who’s having difficulty, I highly recommend trying out his controller scheme. For a while, I was trying to do it using X as jump and it wasn’t consistent. Using one of the bumpers actually makes a huge difference and I can now get it consistently. Thanks a ton for posting this!

I use B for jump and A an attack and it's super easy for me. That's another option. A, Turn Around with momentum jump, A again with stick facing opponent and it becomes a B-Air.

Here how i made it easier. If ur on a gamecube controller the switch z to jump right after the jab. Run forward and then flick the left stick to the opposite direction and immediately bair. Press z and the c stick simultaneously to do a short hop bair

Yes I am doing a RAR. Attack Cancel is an option. A mistake I made in this video was saying you don't need the full hop version. There's times when you do actually need it. Attack cancel also works but has less control. However, I will say that most of the time it will work.

If you DI jab away there's a chance they will sourspot or you will be too far. Depends on percent, don't forget to DI the back air in tho!

Just practice. You'll get it. Try practicing backwards jumping without attacking and then add the attack in. However, you have to already be in a running animation and not just the initial dash. That's something I learned :)
