In reality we only have 260 ( because 12 of the 272 crashed) with 12 on order to make the number 272 which is replacement for the crashed ones. Su-30 MKI is equivalent to Su-35 S of PLAAF (chinese Air force) but not advance then the russians. We don't manufacture these jets but only assemble using CKD kits imported from russia. I myself visited the HAL's Mig facility in Nashik which assemble these jets. The radars and avionics sourced from Israel and france are not the top of the line but will get replace in super sukhoi program ( if approved). It is a capable fighter no doubt about it.

India doesn't buy jets from US bcoz of the conditions they put when buying from , thats why most of the jets are from Russia & France . Now we are developing our own jets & Tejas is the example of modern Indian jet . There are now few projects going on for more India jets . 1. Tejas Mk2 - its a bit bigger than the Tejas & can carry more weapons . 2. TEDBF - Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter, its for the navy bcoz now we have 2 carriers. 3. AMCA - Advance Medium Combat Aircraft , its the 5th gen jet equivalent to f35 but it will be built on 2 standards Mk1 & Mk2 . Mk2 will be the proper 5th gen one . Now we have also started to built our on missiles for jet . ASTRA family of missiles are prominent eg . With Astra Mk1 ,Mk2 & Mk3 with ranges 110km , 150km+ & 250km+ respectively with single pulse ,dual pulse & ramjet technologies in them.

India is planning to upgrade it's sukhoi fleet to super sukhoi with more indian components than russian . They include advanced Uttam AESA radar with range of 400km. Indegenous astra mk1 and mk2 beyond visual range missiles (air to air). Advanced Ai integrated voice command cockpit with upgraded interface. New radar jamming systems and new engines. Almost all of them developed indegenously by DRDO.

To answer your question.. India has a fleet of 272 Su-30 MKI fighter jets, which have been procured in different tranches by the service since the early 2000s. The aircraft have already been upgraded by integrating Indian systems and weapons like the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Astra air-to-air missile. 36 Rafale Jets are already in service, which are giving full satisfaction to the Indian Air Force, making India the first country to make the same military choice as France by operating both versions of the aircraft to help consolidate its superiority. The Indian Navy's additional 26 Rafale M will be inducted by 2024 for the Aircraft Carrier.

American here, aircraft mechanic. Just off base knowledge, no one is buying because they can't stack up against anything the U.S., the U.K., or China is pushing out. Since they set the standard for military aircraft, it's just a matter of improving Indian tech and engineering. India is growing in leaps and bounds though, and the world has their eyes on them. The reason we use french and russian jet's because they don't put conditions on us. Rafale is recently added to Indian Air force. It is 4.5 generation fighter plane and technological advance. There was air show somewhere in saudi long back where some of the nation were invited to show the air capabilities & superiority. I think in simulation dog fight with Rafale & US F22 Raptor gen 5 fighter plane. F22 Raptor was in stealth mode and was not coming in Rafale radar system but still Rafale manage to intercept F22 by heat signatures. This went viral so US weren't happy about because F22 Raptor is most advanced & can't be beaten by anyone. This cause US concern. Rafale can jammed enemy communication system, it can detect 40 enemies in one go at radar within 100km range. There are lot of videos in KZbin about dis fighter jet and I got to know from there. India is also making it's ingenious 5 generation fighter jet called AMCA.

In my opinion, USAF F-22 Raptors and F-35 are the most advanced in the world in terms of avionics and stealth capabilities. But they are too expensive to operate and maintain. Not to mention that their components are very sensitive, which makes it useful only as far as they can get out of the fight without any scratches, thus the importance of stealth. Russian aircrafts have relatively lower avionics and stealth capability (no idea about Su-57 though), but are highly effective because of their sturdy build. Indian versions are built with redundancies, which makes them operable even if it takes some damage. This makes them highly cost effective and don't consume much time and money to maintain. Chinese J - series were built initially by reverse engineering soviet sukhois, but now they've integrated their own indigenously made avionics and composite materials. They still haven't been able to build an 'at par' jet engine but, which makes them unstable at higher speeds and there's a smoke streak out of their engines. At the end of the day, I would say Russians are still more advanced than the Chinese in terms of military technology and they would remain so for quite some time. They had had a good scientific pedigree since soviet days.

And even then, the total number of F-35B UK is ordering are lower than what their two heavy carriers can field. Meanwhile, South Korea just wrote off a spanking new F-35 because it crash landed and now the repairs cost more than a new airframe. That said, this is a problem that plagues all 5tth gen fighters. Not only F-22 and F-35.

We have Russian origin fighter jet because after independence in 1947 , uncle sam (USA) asked india to become slave in return of weapons, while Soviets simply asked india to become brother in return of weapons. That's how India-russia became friends, while uncle Sam was busy in creating taliban and Mujahideens with it's slave pakistan army. Since pakistan is doomed and American intrests are over in Afghanistan, now time has changed. Now uncle Sam wants india in it's camp (NATO+) but india know old saying by henry Kissinger "To be an enemy of the US is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal". Look what they did to UK, France, Germany and Japan, they made sure UK naval power don't increase, they made sure UK can't make their own fighter jets and space program. They always stabs in the back of France. They don't allow other Germany to rebuild their own defence industry complex so American can sale it's weapons to entire Europe. Look at Japan they are situated near 3 hostile countries ( China, Russia and North Korea). And uncle sam has treaty with Japan to not have big army. What if tomorrow Russia, china and N Korea attack japan, Americans will leave Japan in crisis just like Afghanistan. Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was considering to rebuild Japanese army then he got assassinated by fellow Japanese naval sailor with homemade pipe gun. If tomorrow UK refuse to support USA in their Europe strategy then same uncle Sam will threaten UK , they will stop supplying spare parts of weapons, they will say UK is violating human rights 😂 that's why in india no one trust USA, spacially democrats. After WW2 power centre taken out from London to Washington. Now Britain, Canada,NZ and AUSTRALIA don't have independent foreign policy.
