I use the 1DS mark iii quite often. The advantage of this underrated camera is that you have the beautiful colours and rendering of the early 5D cameras - with their famously ‘filmic’ sensors - but in higher resolution, in an incredibly well-built professional body with dual card slots. It has the largest and brightest viewfinder I've ever seen on any camera, ergonomics are flawless, and it balances perfectly with larger L lenses. And you can buy them for next to nothing. It’s a no-brainer!

The 1Ds MkIII was the first full-frame body I bought as a second-hand body, went from a poor Canon 400D straight to the big league, what a beast of a camera, a friend of mine came out with me a few years back, and I'd borrowed a 100 - 400 mm and I did not notice, but my friend was convinced that I had changed my name to Moses, as wherever I stood with this combination, the people would just part like the Red Sea!

Great review Roy. I finally found a mint 1 DS MK III two weeks ago after searching for a few years to upgrade from my old 1DS MK II. BY luck I found one with 1500 actuations and not a mark on it, still in original packaging with all the software and cables - all for the bargain price of 470 British pounds. I have to admit it is a big upgrade and I am more than satisfied with the camera. This should last me for the rest of my life. As an amateur, I just cant afford or justify to spend on a DX model, as fantastic as they are.

Great video. I started my 1D trip with 1D mark II when it was already cheap. Bought 7D mark II later, but missed 1D body style. 1DS III was my second from series. Absolutely great camera. Then I took a chance to upgrade to 1DX II during 2018 for half a price. I still keept my 1DS II for some years, until last year when I have sold it for solid 750 euro. This camera will always have a value. I already own mirrorless Canon, but I will keep my 1DX II forever.

I never owned this 1Ds III but shot with 7D’s, 5D’s, 1Dx, 1Dx II AND R5. I’m keeping the 1Dx II and thinking of picking this 1Ds III as well. You had used them both in the past. Do you care to share your experiences between the two and why did you sell the 1Ds III? I’m not going to sell my 1Dx II either.

Fab review Roy. Technology moves on so rapidly, and so does the marketing and advertising that goes with it, and the net result suddenly means older tech almost appears obsolete, but this review just proves the opposite. In some ways I feel modern cameras are packed full of features, only because the manufactures 'Can' and as it often turns out, most of the tech packed into them, never gets used. This camera was designed for the working pro, and it gives them precisely what they needed, hence why it's just as relevant now, as it was back in 2007. Great work mate, keep it up:)

Excellent points and its the manufacturers drivel that means poor people like me whom can never afford a pro camera can buy a used one many years later and it will still compete with the latest new cameras for the same price. I’ve just acquired one of these for £350, looks brand new, 5000 shutter counts.

Two years since you've made this video. I use to be a professional photographer but got out of it about 6 or 7 years ago. My youngest daughter is graduating this year from high school and I'm going to be doing her senior photos. I own this camera and have had it for over 10 years and it's been a workhorse. Yes, not really a sports camera but I had other bodies for that type of shooting. Out of the 4 or 5 bodies that I still own (all newer than the 1DS) I decided to use the 1DS MKiii. It's true what you said about, it's hard to articulate the quality or feel of the photos that come from this body. Like you, I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. It's been stored for over 4 years and I charged the batteries and attached a lens and it works flawlessly. They don't made them like this anymore. Great overview on this classic body. If there was a camera hall of fame, this one should be in there.

I have to say that I really enjoyed your review of the Canon 1Ds MK III , Roy. You have a new subscriber. The reason I was looking for such reviews is that a friend of mine has just bought one of these cameras for £150 online. Thanks for sharing your experience. Such nice memories. Nowadays the 1DS Mk3 can be found used for like 250-300,- Euros. But a used 1DX is also just 500-600,- So i think this would be a better deal. Although i still have the 5D Mk3, so in that case only the 1DX Mk2 would be an upgrade. But still, its a different feeling when using such a large camera. Also for the modell, when the photographer has a big camera instead of a small APS-C body. Many say, never judge a book buy its cover. But still, visual perception always dominates first. Even in everyday life.

Great information, thanks! Your shots are great too. Furry coat guy is my fave. I just ordered a 1ds mk iii in “good” condition for $500. Going to try it with a Fotodiox Mamiya RB67 to EF adapter because it bothers me that I can’t use these nice old school lenses I already own with a digital camera and apparently putting a digital back on an RB67 isn’t a thing. This might be incredibly front-heavy and goofy looking but we’ll see. The live view zoom-in may come in handy. I shot on a 5D at my old job doing product photography and manual focus was not the most fun thing, mostly because I had to bend over to use the viewfinder which was at waist level. Unfortunately the tabletop was at a fixed height.

I haven't tried some of the most recent canon cameras but as far as dslr goes, it is the best camera canon had ever produced. 5Ds may have more detail but having a 15yo dinosaur that edits so well with 5D4 or 5Ds side by side is amazing. I grew up with 35mm film then transitioned to digital. The 1ds mk3 was a dream camera until I found one a few weeks ago for just over £500 with battery and charger and only 2000 actuations, it's mint and not a mark on it. My planned use is for landscape but having used older camera's for most everything else from still life to sports I am pretty confident that my new besty will cope fine. Thanks very much for posting your insights from the professional point of view. It's easy to start thinking I made a mistake when I see people raging about how superior more recent cameras are but like you observed the 1ds can output files that can be printed at billboard size and still look good from close to. My own opinion is that if the camera can print for a typical photo exhibition where the photo's will be viewed from a sensible distance, ie not right up close with a magnifying glass, and look fine, then there is no downside to what might be the smaller files from the 1ds mk3.

What would you advise us to choose as color profile setting for portraiture on the 1Ds III in daylight natural light? Q2. Would you advise ISO 50 or ISO 100 for best skin tones in daylight natural light using fast Canon lenses? Q3. What Canon or Zeiss EF mount prime lenses would you recommend to couple with the 1Ds III for everyday portraiture?

So my answers might be slightly less interesting than you may have hoped! In terms of profiles I tend to keep everything standard and shoot in RAW and then apply whatever I need at the editing stage. Others will swear by profiles at a capture stage but I stick with standard. Works for me. I tend to use 100iso as my lowest speed unless there is a specific need for slower (like obtaining blur or movement… I cannot remember exactly who I do this but I believe there were maybe some quality issues with the lowest iso option on early digital cameras and it may have stuck somewhere! Old habits die hard. My main lenses are the Canon L Zooms. I shoot such a variety of work that zooms have always given me the most flexibility even though ultimately I would love to shoot just primes. I have never used a Zeiss lens on a canon camera.. only because I have always stuck with canon glass and it’s always served me well.. not to say Zeiss is not amazing.. I have owned and used many of the canon primes and mostly they have all been very good once calibrated. Favourites for portraits would have to be the 50mm and 85mm F1.8 versions of both are good value and have great images quality.

@@RoyRiley Thanks alot for your reply Roy! Interesting comment about the native ISO! I will investigate that further, and settle for either 100, 50 or 200, once I find out what the 1Ds III's native sensor ISO is. PS. We would love to see a followup video on a more general talk about professional client relation stories. How some work came to be, how things can (or almost went) wrong and what can be learned, and what type of work you would still dream of doing some day in the future. I am sure more many other folks here would love that from you! :)

@@RoyRiley If you shoot at ISO 50, camera actually shoots at 100 and darkens the image. So you don't want to shoot at 50 if there are any highlights in the scene, since they will be clipped, even if exposure is correct otherwise. Shadows will have more information though, but personally i haven't seen much difference, and you want to avoid recovering shadows on such old sensor, since they will be noisy almost immediately, even at ISO 50.

@@RedBagMods thanks! Much appreciated. I tend to avoid the “extended” zones of iso range ( typically low and very high) they always seems to push IQ too much. Having said that I have made use of iso 50 if I need a lower shutter speed for whatever reason. Extra blur.. creativity etc

Hey Roy, enjoyed seeing your vids on this and the 5D II. I transitioned out of pro photography when the original 1DS was released (twilight of film career). I remember first using it and feeling a touch nervous about dropping a $10K+ camera setup in the early 2Ks. But I digress. I've read a lot of debate (from both sides) about the look of images out of the older cameras vs. new; you alluded briefly to it in the 5D2 vid. So (he he) the question is ... is this "look" being nostalgic in your opinion, or is there really something about those old cameras that the new cameras lack? I've been dealing with a GAS-induced nostalgia kick and have been looking at the original 1DS (since I used it briefly), the 5D classic, and more recently, the 1Ds II and III, along with the 5D2. Seems there's debate about the look between the 5D Classic and Mark II, where there are those who prefer the classic. So I'm curious about your perspective, since you currently have both, the 1Ds3 and 5D2, and used the 1Ds2. I still have an old Rebel Xt with the 8 meg sensor, which I'm guessing is around the 5D classic timeframe. I'd think the sensor technology is about the same, albeit the cropped size for the Xt. Anyway, would enjoy hearing your opinion RE the nostalgia vs. something special debate.

Very interesting question! Honestly I think it is all down to personal preference. Just because a certain camera is widely considered to have "a good look or feel" does not mean that everyone will like the image from it. Nor should they! I have had certain cameras over the years that I simply like the image straight out of the camera, explaining why is tricky.. it just looks good to my eye. Other cameras I am not so fond of the straight out of camera image but in post production the RAW files they produce will often produce amazing results. In summary I do not think there is any right answer. You just have to find and use what is right for you and your own unique visual preference. Hope this helps in some way! Good luck whichever way you go. All the best. Roy

Paired it with an EF 80-200 F2.8L and it's pin sharp. Only negatives, the rear LCD screen isn't the best compared to modern cameras but it's clear and bright. The buffer is pants if shooting raw but as you said in this video, learn to time your shots rather than rattling off dozens of frames. Thanks PP.To be honest lack of resolution has not really ever been a problem with this camera for me anyway. Interested in what you mean though?? Maybe you are referencing techniques to blend a number of exposures together to remove noise or add detail and resolution?? I have used this a number if times over the years and it’s a good strategy but like you say only when things are rather static! There is also the means in photoshop or similar to interpolate the image to add data to make it bigger in size for when we only have one frame if that is the desired outcome. To be fair to the 1Ds cameras though I don’t think I have ever had much need to use any of these techniques as it’s native resolution is actually very good, even for a camera if this age.

it would be interesting to see how it stacks up against your D3x. I really wanted a D3 when they first came out but the opportunity never arose.. I should look for one now because I would imagine there are a few bargains around. Hey, Good luck with your new camera man.. Hope it goes well for you. RR

It's a great camera. The big thing is that it is an all-weather camera and it is engineered for 100s of thousands of actuations. The Canon 1 series are used by the guys that shoot sports in all kinds of nasty weather. Their paycheck depends of getting the job done so they buy these cameras. I have found it delivers darn good dynamic range. So you can use it in all kinds of situations and out in the rugged wilderness.

@@ADivaForLife I have used the 1ds mark 3 for shooting most sports. and it is certainly capable of producing amazing results, However for the sports you mention I personally would prefer a crop sensor camera that would give a bit more reach, also likely a faster burst rate and maybe faster AF. The Canon 80 or 90D, 7d mk1 or 2 and 1Dx might be worth a look. Hope this helps. Roy

Great review, I actually have a 1dsmk3 and there is definitely something about the images it produces. My canon 5dsr feels to clinical in comparison even though it is newer technology. I have subsequently bought a hasselblad H2 with a phase one p45+ back and the CCD sensor again has something about it which the canon 5dsr can’t match

Interesting stuff! I have not used the 5dsr extensively but keep looking at them second hand because the prices are so good and on paper at least they look epic. Would love to get my hands on some second hand medium format kit… keeping my eyes open on eBay!

Well. These are great cameras IF you understand the nature of the beast! Slower, heavier, bigger, slower, HEAVY, SLOW. Not great in low light. SLOW! But full frame and still capable and that sounds like a reasonable price for two in good order. Not sure if Canon still service or repair this body so worth checking. I used this camera for sports back in the day but these days… I don’t know man.. there are so many well priced faster smaller more efficient cameras out there and the competition in sports in fierce. You have to be able to out shoot the human next to you at an event.. tricky when they are armed to the teeth with R3 cameras.. don’t mean to put you off but worth considering at least… when you shoot professionally you need the right tool for the job. Hope this helps. RR

Wouldn’t b using in studio, just out & about w/ birds, macro, landscape. Weight is a concern as I can only use one arm. But arm & I wrestle enuf w/ tripod. The birds are saying get a kick hearing me curse. The burst rate on canon &0d doesn’t appeal 2 me as it it only 10 shots. Not enuf indeed as buffer takes long time to clear.

Enjoyed your video and comments very much, particularly as I have just picked up a mint 1Ds III with only 328 (not a typo) shots for A$474. It does have a slightly dicky shutter, which I will be able to work with and am hopeful that with some use it may correct itself. However, it's not my only camera, so it's not a problem.

Roy, a few people have spoken of black spots on the sensor. Have you experienced this issue?
@RoyRiley
@RoyRiley 3 жыл бұрын
If you mean dust spots then yes. Most full frame cameras get them from time to time. They can be cleaned from the sensor either with the in-camera sensor clean function or in severe cases with a blower brush, sensor swab or sensor brush. It can be a tricky process and can lead to sensor damage if done incorrectly. Many camera shops offer a sensor clean which often will be the best way to go. If indeed it’s something other than dust spots then I cannot comment! I never experienced anything specific with the 1ds mark 3, in fact it was a huge improvement over the mark 2 in my opinion. Hope this helps! Roy

I just bought a "Good" condition Canon 1DS Mark III which I am waiting for to be delivered for 279 USD or around 213 pounds. because I beat up my entry level DSLR (Rebel 3Ti) while photographing sports and wildlife. Most of the lens I use on the 3Ti were film camera lens.

Amazing photos. The used market really is an embarrassment of riches these days. I judge cameras by the sensor, and obviously the 1DS has a beautiful one. I'm hoping the R6 will prove as beautiful as the 6D which I love (the R6 is the 1DX III sensor).
