Inconsistent Power Levels in Writing

Power Levels. Originally anime goof clowns but honestly its the only good term I could think of to define how powerful a character is in a story. The extent of their abilities. Sometimes stories are not consitent with how powerful a character is to make fight scenes. And yet people take pride in it. And its difficult to see the difference between pride and logic. Why would someone have a problem with Iron man losing? Is it because they like Iron man? Or because Iron man is way more powerful than a buffed normal guy? None. Iron man was just a psychopath. Civil war has a forced and contrived plot full of character assassination. Sacrifice logic for cool fights. For money. Still, dialogue is good and very refreshing for the mcu. The most real feeling mcu movie despite being one of the dumbest. Explain that brother bear.
Yeah guys this is probably the last movie/film video I make. I'm gonna probably make a gaming video next. They're easier to make and this channel was originally a game channel. Making videos where I have to manually grab every single clip is tough. This video took way longer than I had to so I apologize. I did actually start college and I can't believe they have the nerve to be exactly like school. So I have homework. And I told my parents not to put me in college but they insisted so there you go. Easy ass college but very annoying busy work. Its okay tho. But yeah if you're wondering what I would've done instead, I would've started a business. I believe baby.
But yeah I did not expect my last video to blow up as much as it did. Thank you guys so much. My channel got multiplied in size and thats crazy. I love you guys. Thank you. Thanks to the ogs to. And also to the new dudes. Thank you. I'm gonna keep going. Even with college. I'm gonna do this.

good to see someone else realizes how ridiculous and inconsistent most super hero media's power levels are. while it doesn't always result in the death of the story or someone's ability to enjoy it, it will definitely smear shit on the nostalgia you might've had for that movie upon rewatching it and actually understanding how poorly put together the conflict was because the writer's couldn’t help themselves but make characters either not use their conflict ending resources and abilities or ass pull abilities out of nowhere for certain characters so the plot could go in the direction they wanted. also dante from dmc slaps uncle grandpa, cope.

The answer to how much a consistent plot matters is another question: How good are you at writing something that is so entertaining most of your audience isn't going to notice the inconsistencies? Sometimes a work of fiction sucks me in so much I don't even notice, other times I'll notice the plot contrivances the first time through. It took me years to realize that the T-rex pen in the original Jurassic Park transformed from level fern filled ground to a sheer cliff drop between scenes, it took me one viewing to realize that there was no way in hell enough dinosaurs escaped from the auction in Jurassic World 2 to form a stable breeding population (let alone spread a plague of dinosaurs across the whole damned world in the 4 years between it and Jurassic World 3) and that the movies treating weaponized dinosaurs as being superior to conventional military technology was stupid.

Yeah this is something I was thinking about the other day. Each infinity stone could realistically wipe out the avengers. And thats by mcu rules. Soul stone: It literally has the power to take someone's life instantly Power stone: Enough power to wipe out a planet instantly. Could probably kill any avenger in one hit. Time stone: Not only can you freeze time and kill them. You can control the age of anything like doctor strange did to that apple. Just freeze time and time stone everyone out of existence. Space stone: Thanos uses it manipulate objects. He basically just gmods hulkbuster and puts him inside the wall. Reality stone: You can control reality Mind stone: This is is a powerful weapon buit honestly not as powerful as the other ones. But yeah.

0:11 Rigby punching Benson makes a lot of sense here since by this point in the series he's gotten a lot better both mentally and physically. In season 3, he was actually strong enough to hit Mordecai in the face. And by season 6, Rigby was able to harm him again but this time on his arm. And by Season 7, Rigby passed a fitness test in order to create a video game where his results were "off-the-charts" in a good way. Plus Rigby did caught Benson off guard in that scene to which afterwards Mordecai was struggling to keep Rigby in place. I know you didn't really talk about him nor the show for that matter, but I feel like wanting to point this out specifically since I absolutely love Rigby and Regular Show.

I don't think that's really bad thing to do. While I will never put myself into a power scaling debate because the whole thing is stupid, using head cannon is great way to enjoy more things in life. It's not about actually believing your head cannon but using it as a tool to experience the good things that you like about the work in question. For example, if i am presented with a comic saying: "spiderman then dogged Electro's lighting bolts and the kick him in the face". I'm not gonna think, "oh!!! spiderman reacts to light speed and can move at lightspeed too!!!". My head cannon instead will be, "spiderman just saw Electro's hand about to shoot the lighting bolt and he moved away quickly (slightly above average speed)". Then, when in another comic or movie I'm presented with, " Electro's lightbolts track any living thing and the only way to dodge them is to move at light speed". I will simply ignore that part of the story like it never happen. Why? because of the simple reason I like electro and spiderman fighting against each other, but I also like spiderman fighting against kingpin, if I were to believe both fights can have stakes and can happen in the same universe, then I rather gaslight myself instead of accepting stupid writting. It's an internal head cannon, akin to supending disbelief but a little bit stronger. Still, there are sometimes were is found it pretty impossible to support some works of fictions when the writing is so incredibly incompetent, but for the most part, It did help me appreciate a lot more works than I would had before.

I wish there were more people who like discussing about the canonical capabilities of characters for the sake of it being an interesting topic to analyze, instead of for the sake of pride. Although fiction can be inconsistent, it's all interpretable, and this topic leads to interesting discussions, which is pleasant when engaging with the right people.

Ok , i'll be honest : i think if you take it as an opportunity to do phisics exercises it can be intresting , like exercising your ability to guesstimate things can be fun and useful in the same way guys do phisical exercise ... However the discussions around those topics and who would win , Are easily the most toxic ones i have ever seen ... And the whole philosophy is one of "being stronger is more important than anything else a caracter could be" Wich boiled bown to it's bare components is dumb . Like if you stay there just to get deeply pissed at numbers you got from phisics homeworks then yes you've found the smartest way to ruin your day , congratulation ... Also i generally have this idea about how stories are devided : 1) you get object driven stories : sherlock holmes , death notes , breaking bad , Stories in wich cause and effect are the soul of the entire thing , and so inconsistencies aren't tolerated : if in one scene walter white gets cuffed and in the next escapes by flexing his biceps , i will fully lose the intrest , the whole point is "how will walter get out of there ?" and if it's dumb then i lose intrest in full ... 2) theme driven stories : infinity war , flcl , one piece ecc. Ecc. These stories are about the emotions you're supposed to feel and what message you're supposed to get away with : does it matter that kuro of the 1k plans loses in the dumbest way possible afther trying the dumbest plan possible ? Not really , the point is that his lie is belived cause he looks respectable , while usopp isn't belived while telling the truth because he likes saying tall tales , The respectable disonest man vs the unrespectable honest man is the point , not wheter luffy can react to an hypersmart and superfast guy with knife hands ... That is aestetics basically ... Spectacle ... Naturally these exist on a spectrum : Clever riddles fill your mind , And deep themes change your life ... Both will keep your reader coming for more

In the comics it's explained that that the reality stone stone is more general purpose and less easy to use without the others, especially in those aspects of reality the others are best at manipulating. The movies don't really go into that level of detail though, so they don't get a pass.

@@VunderGuy So the amount details you can manipulate with that stone is based on how many stones you have? I didn't read the comics but I'm interested in how the stones are supposed to work. Any power level can make for much better fights when that power level isn't the only thing that decides the course of it. Tactics, mentality, and technical skill can weigh just as heavily as who throws the harder punch or any special powers the participants possess. That isn't an excuse to ignore the power of the characters of course. Trying to create a compelling strategic interplay with inconsistent characters would be like building on a foundation of quicksand. I think it ultimately comes down to suspension of disbelief. If a story is enjoyable enough that you care about the characters and less about their abilities, when their abilities are treated more or less powerfully than has been established, you may not notice or care because you care about the characters. If it doesn't bug you until a while after the story, it probably worked for the story. If inconsistent power levels bug you in the midst of the story, it's probably more of a story issue, in that the audience hasn't become invested in the characters.

Consistency, consistency, consistency. You could write the most fantastical story but if the characters live in this universe and remain *consistent* with the rules you establish the audience will do the rest themselves. I once took two very inhuman things, a particle of light and a forest interacting with each other and figuring each other out in their role in the natural world. If you remain consistent, the audience can suspend whatever disbelief is needed. However, a writer needs trust in themselves and their audience to make this a smooth experience. Cause it’s easy to pick apart, Marvel doesn’t trust their audience to feel *anything* so your hand is held through the story which isn’t necessarily bad but are we writing home about Captain Marvel for example?

The only reason its fun is because you *don't* know who wins. If there was a 'correct' answer, what would be the point of discussing it? Some people get it messed up and believe that somehow they have the 'correct' answer of who would win when in reality that answer simply does not exist.

It’s to be expected for most communities to have *those* certain types of people. While I don’t claim to know the exact reason, I can guess that the majority of them seek the validation or justification for their preferences in media by putting other people’s down. When Little Timmy says “Goku beats x and y”, it’s less so because Timmy actually thinks that Goku is somehow the strongest thing in existence and would solo real life or whatever, more so Goku being his favorite character and if his favorite character beats the other kid’s favorite character then that somehow means his taste and by extension himself is superior. It’s one of the stranger ways to feed your ego. Even if one of them wins an argument somehow, they’ll end up getting more smug about themselves than just supposedly winning the argument. Power scaling is fun, Vs Battles are also fun. Both stops being fun when people start to fight over them.

One nitpick I have with this video is that Thanos intentionally didn’t kill anyone in infinity war. He didn’t want to take any more lives until he could let the fully powered gauntlet make “the ultimate choice” of who gets to live in the new universe. Once Thanos puts on the gauntlet he only kills Loki, a character who lied to him and tried to put a knife in his throat, and people he must kill to obtain the stones (The Collector, Gamora, and Vision.) Yes Thanos COULD have wiped the avengers with just the reality stone, but he did not WANT to do that.

I hate inconsistent power levels and the MCU is indeed a hideous example of just how bad it can get... However, Civil War is not emblematic of that problem at all. In fact, it's probably the single best film in the MCU in that regard by a large margin. Likewise, the reality stone example is a very valid one, but the ambush on Vision? Seriously? Of course two (alien) supersoldiers can take on Wanda and Vision if they catch them by surprise, immediately disable Vision's strongest ability, and relentlessly attack a desperate Wanda - how is that poor powerscaling? Also, how is Cap, Falcon, and Widow being able to handle a couple supersoldiers poor powerscaling either? You made good points but it helps to not undermine them with unfitting examples among a collection of very apt ones. Anyway, I look forward to more of your content in future!

The problem with power levels honestly comes from two sources, as I see it. The need to churn out more content, with constant high stakes, and the increasing franchise-ization and crossovers. Using the same characters forces you to rubberband all their power levels together or selectively pick a winner based on what you want the story to do even if it doesn't make sense. And with continuing stories you constantly get faced with a need to introduce more threats of greater escalation. These ideas are as old as pop culture, even ancient mythologies have BOTH of these issues from time to time. This is probably why cape stuff gets so ridiculous, because it's acting off of like an entire century's worth of material with constant crossovers and escalations. Letting casts function independently and having their own scale of strength and just bringing their stories to a close when the main plot line has ended and the author can't think of anything left for the cast to do are the solutions.
@bionodroid547
@bionodroid547 5 ай бұрын
i don't even think you need to have super high power levels in order to keep making things more and more high-stakes, it's just that, from the beginning, a lot of franchises predicate their main struggles around the hero defeating some entity or something like that by getting new abilities or imrpoving, which can be satisfying, but simply does not have the same longevity as a character based drama where things are relatable and having new conflicts are easier to write. of course you see that less often in action franchises because that type of writing takes a lot of skill and effort to weave it in with the action.

i think the scene is reasonable just because they weren't powered up and people lose fights. some people act like it's impossible but in an armed fight where you're non-superhumans, anyone can win. which is why duels in westerns and classic samurai movies can be so tense even when you know there's a power imbalance, depending on the plot the stronger character might lose and it's not inexplicable.

The reader shouldn't know what the writer is doing, at least not so simply, have the reader guess for awhile, and if there is an answer and not just for interpretation, give it later, show it later. They also shouldn't be able to tell if certain things are happening because of 'plot', if they can, then you have a mid movie

You making fun of powerscalers and vs battles videos LOL, too much gold, it's so accurate, it's insane. I'm actually one of these vs battles channels, but i actually try to be as precise as possible as i do take it very seriously (i swear, it's not self promotion lol) and until yesterday i was having a back and forth with this guy insisting that God Of War was Outerversal. TLDR; Loved the video and, as a powerscaler myself, it's pretty crazy to see a reflection of myself and the community! You gained a sub!

here goes the cringe... Kratos scales to Outerversal - Boundless just from the fact that the Primordials existed before creation even existed and they transcend every concept imaginable except for the concepts that the Titans made because they're more powerful.

To be fair the fight with thanos, he was overpowered and they did make the fight fast enough to intentionally prevent opportunities from thanos pressing the i win button: It was a good way to write an op villain: Strange counter hax him and no one else lets go of his glove

Okay, so what if, and hear me out: you don't see the normal people that like power scaling because a normal person will not write a paragraph on why darkside stomps condiment king. If we where to judge every community by it's loudest and worst part, literally no community would be safe. None at all

This guy gets it, "powerscaler" is such a vague and undefined term you could consider anyone who has ever expirienced fiction a powerscaler, if they thought and "measured" the characters power even a little bit, I guess they are a tiktok vs creator debatelords now who only care about character power. I like and occasionally do a bit of powerscaling and even debate but i try my best to be nice and not take it to the personal, but the guy who made the video and many antipowerscalers will never acknowledge powerscalers like me, its only the extreme wrost examples, you can easily paint any large group of people as horrible idiots if you cherry pick the wrost ones.

endgame ruined all marvel for me time travel is the worst thing you can doo to any movie. the only way time travel works is if there are strict rules like back to the future and you cant just asspull things without your timeline changing

I feel like both infinity war and endgame rushed in a lot of concepts into the mcu without fleshing them out. Like that scene in endgame where they find thanos on some planet and they're just gonna go to that planet. When rocket asks if anyone hasn't been to space and they all raise their hands. Like thats kind of ridiculous when you think about it. I think instead of messing around with ultron and civil war they should've started naturally progressing towards the infinity gauntlet storyline. Not just do it randomly out of nowhere.

This is one of the realest guys on KZbin, anybody who starts seething and crying like a vet having ptsd flashbacks over a video pointing out known facts are dumb ASF, like the reason why people have stopped caring about or liking superhero movies is because the power scaling and plot is always manipulated in such an unnatural and unrealistic way that nobody actually takes things seriously, because they'll just base the story off whatever is convenient and not explain things like Thor out of nowhere throwing storm breaker through the power of all the infinity stones when the whole movie thanos was handling all the heroes with ease just because it was convenient for the story writers, pretty much making it look like Thanos was more powerful with less infinity stones, probably a hot take, but I could keep going forever explaining everything but this man is saying is based in reality and i think anyone having a meltdown over a different opinion is mentally deficient especially if the opposite opinion is based on a fictional subject.
