1:36:53 Ah, man. Gus actually was wrong. The wheels do not need to touch the ground for a plane to accelerate on a failed landing attempt(read: overshooting the landing, not crash anding). The plane can just fly slightly above the runway and accelerate in the air. That's because the wheels of a plane are not affected directly by the engine. So Burnie was completely right, even if he worded it wrong. The wheels obviously do turn, but they do so passively. But here's the problem. The example Jack brought up touches on a _completely different problem_. The whole purpose of wheels is to reduce the friction between the ground and the vehicle. On water, you obviously use something different, but the purpose is the same (and to keep you afloat, of course). A plane cannot take off on a treadmill (as long as there is friction between the ground and the wheels) because in that scenario it does have no speed in relation to the air surrounding it. There is no lift. But this does not prove that the wheels are useless. All it proves is that the speed in relation to the ground doesn't play a role in creating lift. What the Mythbusters experiment was doing was showcasing the difference between *groundspeed* and *airspeed* and that you actually need a certain airspeed to take off. And once the propeller manages to overcome the hindering influence of the friction affecting the wheels it could even take off on a treadmill, as seen in the final experiment on that Mythbusters episode (even though I still think that the car was simply too slow as well). Normal runways are no treadmills, though. Here are two experiments I would like you to try to see that your example was not related to what Gus was saying. They can be performed with RC planes, but keep in mind that real planes are heavier and the effects you observe might have to be put into perspective: Take a plane, put it on it's underside with the landing gear pulled in, put it on a runway and try to get it in the air. Have fun collecting the pieces... If you get it to move at all. Or try this one: build a plane with the engine propelling the wheels instead of a propeller and have it speed down the runway. Make sure that it does reach the normal take-off speed of a plane with similar weight distribution and total weight. Make sure to use a longer runway. The thing might have to land again pretty soon... I mean, if it takes off, of course (which it obviously will). After having done these fun experiments, say again that wheels on planes that take off on a runway are useless. This turned out way longer than it probably should have been and I'm probably taking it out of context as well by overreacting like that... So here's the short version: *Burnie's socks are fucking awesome!*

Pretty sure why tumblr's got a pretty bad image with the guys that work there; I know that RT Confessions started out as a place where Mavin shipping was huge. A lot of the fantasizing was just projecting because they kept sensing "sexual tension" when there really wasn't. Led to all kinds of implications where people honestly believed that a man and woman can't just be friends and that they must have banged each other. Burnie was right: the Internet is one big fucking echo chamber where no new information spreads and its just a lot of morons parroting the same (often really stupid) comment.

the mythbusters did a myth on the plane thing, and it twisted my mind, because it doesn't make any common sense that the wheels don't matter for taking off, but that's the way it works b/c the acceleration is driven by the engines, not the wheels. First of all I would like to say this will be a OffTopic Post, but since it happened today I decided to write it here. As long as I supported every RT decisions I think that the decision to put down BestOfAH of HeroTheyCallMe has been a asshole move. I know, I know.. he monetized those videos but who cares? They claim the copyright but he didn't copy their material to make it his own material.. He spent time create the best of their let's plays and also refering to their channel. He also publicise their christmas stuff.. it was free publicity for them. And instead of contact him to make a sort of agreement with him for his job they decided to put it down, only because they did ONE "BEST OF" recently. (And to be fair I think they didn't even spent enough time to take the really best ones). He did for one year and now they seem to wake up and discover these videos... Ps. Sorry for my bad english skills

He may have put some time into re-editing the videos but he didn't create that content. KZbin has an algorithm that locates mirror content and flags it so this is hardly RT's fault. Fact of the matter is, he shouldn't have monetized the videos and he's paying the price for his indiscretion.

I'm almost certain that KZbin automatically claimed the video for copyright infringement, like many other videos. Lately, KZbin has been claiming PLENTY of videos for companies that honestly don't care, like Rooster Teeth. KZbin claims videos that the companies actually encourage to upload, like a famous KZbinr uploading Assassin's Creed or whatever. The company that owns the game may not care, but KZbin cares for them, so the video gets claimed anyways. So, though Rooster Teeth may have actually claimed *****'s video, it was most likely KZbin doing it for them.
