This is why I say Hoenheim has one of the saddest back stories in anime. He didn't ask for basically everyone he knew to be sacrificed. He didn't ask for immortality. And to cap it all off he went centuries without an actual family. I think he held off on having a family because of the attachment issues he developed because of his immortality and outliving everyone, which really just shows how much he rest loved Trisha, but he couldn't even be there when she died

You can see how detached he still is, he sums it up in the last line : That's WHAT I am. Not who, it tells you everything you need to know, Hohenheim doesn't consider himself a person, at all.

I thought he wasn't there when she died because he found out that "Father" was making a new philosopher stone out of Amestria, so he spread out his blood around the country to make a transmutation circle to counter his transmutation that was activated by the shape from the shadow of the moon.

@@norXmal this is correct, I think Antonio is saying that Hohenheim finally loved someone enough that he needed to be with her/them, but because of what happened to him, he had to go stop Father, thus not being able to be there when she died.

One of the small details I like about this show is that there are almost no characters with blonde hair AND golden eyes. This trait was probably unique only to the Xerxians. With all of them wiped out Ed, Al, Hohenheim, and Father all the people of Xerxian blood left. If you think about it further, this entire show is just some family fight with the worst possible pair of "brothers" (Ho and Father) to choose from and their kids.

Nice point of view, but the truth is: Dwarf in the flask is basically the first son of hohenheim. And the 7 homunculi are cousins of Ed and Al, making Dwarf: Edward and Alphonse's uncle. This was confirmed by the creator of the show. You can search in google or FMA wikia. In short and giving props to your text, it's a show about "family issues".

It's the scream at the apex. After 39 and a half episodes, tons of backstory, tons of mysteries it pays off with one of the greatest payoffs I've ever seen in storytelling and it does it with this giant crescendo of music as Hohenheim and his screams literally disintegrate into the void. The only thing I can even think of coming close is the clock tower sequence from Bebop.

All you need to know is a dude who left the space mafia gets forced to reunite with his old partner/arch enemy in a church and all hell breaks loose. The flashbacks during *the* moment are really all you get of his past throughout the entire show and tell you a pretty complete story without a word being uttered. Plus, Yoko Kanno's score for the show was already heavenly but "Green Bird" playing over the whole thing sends this into the upper echelons of magnificence. I was around 15 the first time I saw this and it sounds like hyperbole but it honestly changed my life. It was the first time I saw ever saw something "truly beautiful" in a form of entertainment.

The idea is that Selim/Pride is the first homunculus that Father made, not the first in general. And the reason his shadow monster shit looks the way it does is because, as Father's PRIDE, he made it look like himself as he used to be. In a way it's more vanity/vainglory than pride, but pride's a lot more well known as a sin than them, so whatever.

After this episode, I felt so bad for Hohenheim and completely understood him as a character and his actions. He never wanted any of this, but he was put in the most fucked up situation there was. All he wanted was a family and a better life, but Father basically twisted that and cursed him with immortality by giving him half the population of Xerxes. The sad irony is that when Hohenheim did finally have a family, he had a difficult time getting close because of what he is. We also can now see what the first few seconds of Opening 1 was showing. Hohenheim's story was right in our faces the whole time lol

All because, remember, father gave him a name, he gave him power. Ironically, it was the homunculus, not a human, who taught hohenheim to be a man and not property.

Father gave him all of this, and for a long tome hohenheim probably thought of the dwarf as a brother. But all the trust hohenheim put into the creature was shattered. And then hohenheim thought, “if I couldn’t stop him then when he was trapped in his flask, how can I hope to stop him now, when he has a whole nation beneath him”

It's the same thing lol it just makes the implication of how he got there different, not what he currently is. The red alchemy of both of them both lends strength to that. Even when Spoilers: ed used his own life as alchemy to save himself coming up shortly it is the normal color so it isn't about the power of using life being red but the attribute of using a philosopher stone

He just considers himself inhuman anymore which is why he describes himself like that. He is a human that is just immortal because of a philosophers stone power. He isn't a literal stone. He just has its power. There is a clear distinction.
