How to get the out in a rundown or pickle every time. Make rundowns work in baseball. Getting the free out every time without giving up a run. Best advice on the run down and getting outs.

Great explanation to allow coaches to think on how they can capitalize in those situations.

4:02 this is also tough for an umpire working the game by themselves. Notice the umpire called the baserunner out between first and second base, but doesn't know if the other baserunner touched home plate.

You're right. As a solo umpire sometimes you need to prioritize and if you do miss something..."if you want me to see that, coach, pay for 2 umpire. " lol

a lot of this video could be taken as a demo on how NOT to umpire a rundown, but this guy working solo did fine; he's not the most mobile guy in the world, but he got where he could in the available time

Or if the run scored before the out

@@ClintonCountyDroneGuy since the players didn’t run off the field I would guess this was not a timing play. With less than 2 outs he is sacrificing seeing the touch at home to make a better call on the play. If there were 2 outs this becomes difficult for the umpire Since it now matters if the runner scored first. If he moves out for the rundown he will need to swing around to make a quick judgment call on the runner at 3rd. The other option is to stay at Home and make the judgment call on the tag while also being able to see the timing of the runner touching the plate in reference to the out. In a one man crew, you have a sacrifice one way or the other.

one thing you missed, don't stand on the bag, be a few steps off the bag to take the slide away

Last call from LLWS. Fielder is on the grass. Runner in the baseline. No contact that I can see. Runners progress not impeded in any way. This was not obstruction.

Contact is not required. Baseline is irrelevant. Runner has a base PATH and he chooses that and can not deviate more than 3 feet from his base path (not baseline) to avoid a tag. The fact that the runner was impeded and required to alter his path to the base due to a fielder without the ball means obstruction was ruled correctly. Again, contact is not required.

Your third to last clip should be shown as an example of obstruction and how umpires rarely call it. Pitcher obstructed the runner at home without possession of the ball.

Obstruction on the pitcher blocked the runners lane without the ball.

I like pickel's... especially with a pastrami on rye with mustard. 😉

SS at 6:51 should have gotten the ball to home a couple of steps sooner to force the runner to retreat to third where the out should have then occurred. Never allow the play to happen at the forward base if at all possible especially home where the penalty for failure is a run.
