For context, a mummy is basically a Cleric Lich. Wizards can’t become them aside from like mummy rot. But a powerful cleric can willingly be mummified alive to achieve a stable form of undeath, powered by their faith in their god. Like how Death Knights are Paladin liches.

@@blvalverde There's a warlock one out there, can't remember if it's in the current edition, but there was a thing where it's essentially a punishment possibility from some of the patrons if the warlock fucked up. Paladins also have a second form of "undead" self that popped up in, at least, 3/3.5 that's either undead or deathless where it's the Paladin being so duty focused that they exist beyond death until they complete their mission One of the WotC/AEG books for when they were cooperating for OA/Rokugan included what is essentially a Lich/Mummy thing for the monks based on the self mummifying traditions in some locations. You also had the sword Lich from one of the old Dungeon or Dragon magazines where the weapon is basically the phylactery and got stronger and stronger while being very difficult to find out what it actually was...and would start taking over the bodies of wielders. I believe it was from around with the Book of Vile Darkness came out and was an alternate use for the possession mechanics along with sentient weapon rules and other things in a rather twisted adventure.

Mummies are something that i've changed opinion on a lot over time. Growing up, a lot of media present pyrmaids as these trap filled dungeons that are meant to be raided for treasure. But growing up I realized that like... these are graveyards and catacombs. That's kinda fucked up the way that some media portrays them as. Not to mention there's been actual issues in the past with tomb raiding. If I were to run a pyramid tomb, i'd give it some kind of reason. Like that they're trying to clear out a curse or that they do need a magic item from it, but they have to try and convince the long dead Pharoah to hand it over.

For mummified bog bodies, you could easily strip out the Egyptian-esque flavor of the regular mummy (not sure how mummy lords would work, though) and replace the "turn to dust" effect of mummy rot to instead have the victim turn into swamp water (like a less-hygienic version of Senator Kelly's mutation-induced death in the first "X-Men" movie). And what they guard isn't something precious that their creator tasks them with protecting, but rather, the bog itself.

I think a third party book for 3e had that exact plot line as one of three ways a trap riddled example dungeon could end. It was expressly a book full of traps and examples of how to spice them up and use them better. The other end game sections were basically; “thank you heroes, now take this plot item and get out” and “load bearing boss defeated, now you have to time trial the trap laden dungeon backwards.” It was basically, did you save the exposed female mummy from her tomb degrading as she slept, and did you solve the puzzles or just smash through that determined what the mummy lord at the end did in response.

I like the idea of taking the Tomb Kings of Khemri from Warhammer Fantasy, and plopping something similar in my D&D world. There's just a suspiciously Egypt-like country - a fertile river valley surrounded by deserts - where the Old Kings knew the secret of mummification. And the land is just filled with hidden tombs, that only each Pharoah's successor knew the location of (who was, in turn, buried where only THEIR successor knew, etc). Or else there's some, like, tomb cities where a bunch of lords decided to hang out together. Most of the time, the mummy lords astral project into their version of the afterlife or in other planes of existence. Popping back in if they sense their tomb has been raided (though usually only after their subordinates have been unable to repel the invaders, since the boss needs their beauty sleep). But sometimes they allow, or allowed in the past, for mortals to come speak with them. The mummies provide(d) counsel for mortal lords or imparted tutelage on various topics, and the mortals would provide offerings and entertainment. (Mummies get bored when they aren't flying through the astral plane). It's both a mutual arrangement, and a tradition born of duty, for both parties. For the record, in this setting, the mummies are of various Alignments. Because that's more interesting than them all being evil. Though as a caste of undead drawn mostly from the nobility and their favored servants, there's no shortage of dicks. That's just how feudalism works. The mummies also have millennia old rivalries with each other. This can evolve out of personal grudges or family squabbles. Some mummies might have betrayed the locations of their fathers's tombs for personal gain, and now the father is a refugee hanging out in a friend's tomb, bitter as hell. Entire dynasties naturally have animosity towards the ones who replaced them (probably violently), and the feeling is mutual. Some dynasties, in a mirror to Real Life Egyptian history, were formed out of invaders to the region who adopted the "civilized ways" of their new country. The elder dynasties naturally despise these outlander barbarians, no matter how they "ape our ways". And, naturally, some mummies are such huge dicks - so incredibly Evil - other mummies oppose them on principle (even the mummies who are, themselves, Evil). Because all these mummies - Pharoahs, minor lords, their servants, etc - are petty bitches, an adventurers wandering the land will have a hard time figuring out who they should be looting and killing. They all think someone is The Worst, and will say as much. Navigating this political landscape is half the game. And we're not even getting into the MORTALS who live here and have their own complex relationships to the Old Kings. From those who continue the old traditions, to those who actively worship the mummies (in general or specific ones), to converts to a foreign religion that considers undead a bad thing (though practitioners have a spectrum of ideas about what to do about them, from "live and let live" to "kill them all"), to folks just keeping their heads down to avoid plagues and curses and undead warfare.

Can't remember where I heard it but I heard in old lore that a mummy lord could inflict you with their mummy rot, and then perform a ritual on you, if they succeeded you wouldn't be able to free yourself and then if you died of the rot you would, instead of turning to dust, rise as a new mummy, but because of the ritual the mummy did you would come back as one that has all your memories, class levels, and skills, but total loyalty to the mummy lord as part of the ritual, as such they can have an infinite number of these at their command. Which also means a mummy lord can have guardians that are actually stronger then it itself is if it so happened to capture itself a couple high level adventurers.

For anyone wanting to run mummies and interested in third party materials, I recommend Kobold Press' Tome of Beasts, which adds some very thematic monsters to diversify your pyramid dungeon like Ushabti (custodians and guardians of mummy tombs that range in challenge rating from just a little better than normal mummies to just shy of the power of a mummy lord), Possessed Pillars (basically animated statues that the artist decided to make look like a big anubis statue), Anubians (sand elementals), and Accursed Defilers (sandy undead that I personally flavor to be the undead forms of people who died from the effects of a mummy's rotting fist). I also recommend Nord Games' Ultimate Bestiary: Dreaded Accursed, which adds a bunch of different types of mummies of varying challenge ratings from stuff like armed mummy guards of varying challenge ratings, to mummified animals (an actual thing ancient Egyptians did), to straight up a mummified sphinx. They also provide the idea for dungeon masters to make Russian nesting dolls of mummies, where you kill a mummy only to discover it was filled with mummified snakes!

On the subject of making Mummy adventures, remember that there's an entire set of NPC stat blocks in the back of the Monster Manual (with similar sets of stat blocks in other books). If you want more variety in your encounters, just take these stat blocks and slap on mummy-specific traits, like the cursing touch or the vulnerability to fire. A mummy lord should not be limited to just generic mummies. They may have a plethora of favored servants with their own skill sets. From elite warriors (Veterans, Knights, Champions), to magical specialists (Mage, Archmage), to musicians and storytellers (Bards), to covert agents (Spies, Assassins, Warlocks), to diplomats and seneschals (Nobles). These folks might be "mere" minions, that die like normal mummies, or they might be full-fledged undead like their master, with their own heart jars. Because if their lord wants them around for all of eternity, it makes sense they should be able to return if killed. (Probably with the lord themselves or a favored overseer given control of those hearts, as final insurance to force eternal compliance). Nobody said you can't also apply mummy traits to beast or monster stat blocks, either. WotC can't stop you from siccing mummified baboons or manticores on your party. Unless the monster is naturally intelligent and the lord has a good reason for prizing that, or the beast is the lord's beloved pet, these mummies probably aren't given the recurrent undeath treatment. They're disposable unless the lord wants it otherwise. (Now a _mount,_ for the lord or a favored warrior servant, might merit having their heart preserved. Especially if it's a really cool one, like one that can fly. Imagine the mummy lord attacking the party in the desert on the back of a mummified fellbeast, like an Egyptian-themed Nazgul). Other cool monsters for a mummy lord: stone golems shaped like Egyptian statues; illusory or clay constructs (ushabti the mummy summons to life from tiny figurines); Shadows (from the Monster Manual) created from the bound Ka of those who opposed or failed the mummy lord; painted figures on the walls that come to life and attack intruders; swarms of flesh-eating scarabs; dust mephits, air elementals, and other desert-themed elemental creatures; and all manner of skeletons, of course.

The love story between a mummy and a vampire did happen with a little guy named Arkhan. Though his magic cure all had a little something missin' from it and she died anyway.

I ran a Mummy Lord who, along with his wife and servants, acted as would be guardians and advisors of their family line. After ruling their land into prosparity for several hundred years, they decided to retire and allow their decendents to take over and do the heavy lifting while they enjoyed their lavish tomb in relative peace. However, they cursed anyone in their family who abused the people, and inflicted plagues upon them until they straightened up or were eventually overcome. The party came on during these plagues, to which the current pharoah attempted to enlist them to their cause offering them their weight in gold, citing the tyrant had ruled over this land with impunity for thousands of years, and his guard (Who were basically the best and most loyal guardsman of the OG pharoah's age) were to strong. The party went to fight them, only for them to learn that this guy had effectively been retired, and the guy they got hired by was a prick. Rather than their weight in gold, the original pharoah offered a spell book with their divine spells to the party as well as a trinket to return to his descendent and politely refuse, with the trinket 'for their troubles'. Party wisely decided to take the spell book and peace out, cause family disputes just ain't worth it.

I was in a campaign where we planted a Magic Bean and summoned a pyramid with a mummy lord inside. We all almost died but it then got 2 shot because we were all around level 8 when we did this. The DM then learned Mummy Lords have hoards and the items he rolled were stuff we were already planned to get during the campaign, so we ended up skipping a chunk of the campaign. So that’s fun. We later got attacked at our base and the 2 sorcerers on our team (Divine Soul and Wild Magic) channeled their magic to teleport our base, and me (Horizon Walker Ranger) used the portal detect ability to find a good trajectory for us to teleport, and we teleported to where we summoned the Pyramid from.

Whats really scary is a Mummy King/Lord coming back to life, becoming a God to a Army of Cyclopes and proceeds to turn them all into an army of Cyclopse Mummies, then starts a campaign of mass death to enable him to rule the world in his never ending dynasty of undead. Thats a free D&D campaign idea for ya

the most annoying part about these, litches and basically any ousider is that they literally just respawn if you dont kill them right. Imagine fighting a mummy lord 3 different times just because you cant find its heart. I could never, the moment it even smells like I might get mummy rot my character my character is gone. However I would like to pitch a concept. Fungal spore mummy in the under dark who awakened underneath a myconid colony and turned them evil and now evil fungal rot spreads from the colony with the mummy at its heart.

I love mummies as divinely powered (clerics rather than wizard liches,) and this pointed me to Pointy Hat's great undead video. It opens up story ideas, and fits with the classic story that mummy brains weren't preserved like other organs. A mummy can't cast intelligence spells, it literally has no brain. It's just going on vibes now

I think you would basically play it as a revenant style character who is after something or someone as a condition of its rising. Might take some work to justify leveling it up as a class.

I like to think that the mummy rot effect is like entropic tax evasion. Despite being both physically and magically protected from rot, the weight of time still bares down on them, building as a sort of "decay pressure." When a mummy strikes a living creature, some of that pressure is passed on to them, causing them to decay in the mummies stead.

I ran an adventure where a mummy lord had hidden its heart inside a large stuffed tiger, and couldn't be killed until the heart was destroyed, which required cutting open and digging through the tiger and passing a check to find it. Or, as my chaotic asshole party did, setting the stuffed tiger on fire the instant they entered the room just because it looked spooky, killing the mummy lord and skipping the boss fight before he even woke up, and leaving none the wiser.

I have a cleric that her lore basically is that she is a mummies created by the Egyptian god because for a complicated reason she can't really go to the Egyptian afterlife. So she just comes back each time the gods needs her to do shit.

For extra badassery and DM laziness, just take the Tomb Kings from Warhammer Fantasy (bonus points for Settra or Arkhan), and get some nasty stone constructs or ghosts to go along with them. Though if you pull out a not-Settra type mummy, he really HAS to be a badass King, and really be a threat to your setting, for Settra does not serve.

I play a shadar-kai in descent into avernus right now. dude had his arms cut off and skeleton arms grafted where they used to be like the 3.5 prestige class "Pale Master." He was kidnapped by a thayan wizard and had this done to him. I use this for his Elemental-Adept-Fire-Damage that he gets from being a blood hunter. I call this Ghostfire, because we've flavored it as like that black flame from the elden ring, and because of you.
