Rush: Half the World: One of my hidden gem favorites...

“I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate, are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear? For my father and my brother it’s too late, but I must help my mother stand up straight.” One of the most haunting lyric passages ever.
@JimmyRJump2 жыл бұрын
I hear you brother. My dad was in a work camp (not a concentration camp) from 1940 til 1943 and escaped with three other inmates in late 1943 and went on foot from Aachen to Dunkirk all through the warzone. My dad escaped to England and came back to drive ammo trucks all the way into Holland to provide the troops with ammunition and food and fuel right until the end of 1945 while at the same time suffering from shell-shock, picked-up during his escape from the ports of Hamburg and Bremen when they were bombarded by the allies during their escape. My father, Rubinchuck (a russian dude), Frans Gooris and a guy from Holland, Rotterdam, who was a pick-pocket. They split ways at Aachen (the Russian and the Dutch guy went back North-East while my father and Frans Gooris went West towards the coast) to end-up at the coast of the North Sea and got a ride to England on a fisher's boat to enlist in the Amercan army. Frans Gooris became military police but my father wasn't allowed into the army because of his condition; but since he was a good truck driver he was given a permit to drive ammo and fuel details.

@@debbieplato5107 My grandfather was a so-called "veldwachter" (field-watcher, a police officer in those days, although he wasn't in function under German law. You had "veldwachters" and "boswachters (forrest-watchers)" and because they needed police in the small villages the "field-watchers" were chosen to act as police. So, my grandfather had his office at the municipality building because the guy appointed by the Germans wasn't talked to when problems arose; my grandfather was the guy they talked to because according to the villagers he was the guy in charge, so he walked in and out of the office like it was still his and as such he was able to make "false" real papers for my father and three of his friends so they had an "ausweiss" for control posts and possessed passports for border control. False names, but real papers with the correct stamps. Belgians weren't controlled that severely so, after they got stuck in both the harbours of Hamburg and Bremen, they decided to take a train to Aachen and go on foot from there. It worked too. Cheerio lass.

This song is about the Concentration camps in WW2 Germany. Geddy had family in there.
@sumonjamal16532 жыл бұрын
The lyrics to 'Red Sector A' was from the account of Geddy Lee's mom, who was a Jewish girl in Europe when she and her family were taken by the German nazis during World War II and forced into death camps... Her dad and her brother died in that camp before the Allied forces broke through and liberated them from nazi captivity... she and her mom were able to flee Europe w/ Geddy's father and settle in Canada. Geddy's father was also a Jewish youth forced into labor in nazi death camps when he met Geddy's mom... they eventually got married. However, the experience of working in those death camps was (likely) what led to Geddy's father passing away from health problems when Geddy was just 12 yrs old. Geddy Lee recalled that Jews like his family were treated like pariahs, growing up in Canada... it was still the horrible racism and bigotry they experienced well after World War II.

@@POPE. Rush rocker’s mom, an Auschwitz survivor, was his biggest fan Mary Weinrib, who died at 96 earlier this month, lived through the Holocaust before making a new life in Canada; she was an early supporter of son Geddy Lee’s band ....Rush lead singer and legendary bassist Geddy Lee has paid tribute to his Jewish mom, Mary Weinrib, who passed away on July 2, 2021. Weinrib, who was set to turn 96 on July 16, was not only a massive supporter of her son’s music career but was also a Holocaust survivor. ( from .timesofisrael. article... ) @sumonjamal1653

Rush was the best product any gathering of three musicians could ever produce. Three genius musicians assembled into a band by chance and producing music in such grand fashion that the world would listen in awe. "Grace Under Pressure" was their then latest feat and "Red Sector A" was their salute to holocaust survivors. Both singer Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson's parents were holocaust survivors who escaped to Canada at the end of WWII, so, the guys knew what they were talking about.

I really like how the emotion in Geddy's voice and on his face here augments the impact of Neil's lyrics, vividly bringing the horrors of the concentration camps to life; with anti-semitism and other forms of hatred on the rise, it's a powerful reminder that we must do all we can to prevent anything like this from ever happening again. Great reaction; looking forward to more! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

Best guitar/drum duet, ever! Such a haunting tune about a dark subject (Holocaust). The solo paints a very ghostly picture, while the drums highlight gunshots.

Red Sector A is the area they sat to watch the 1st space shuttle launch of Columbia in 1981.from the song Countdown. They used that for the song title about the holocaust !

This was my “Live” introduction to Rush waayyy back on Oct 26, 1984. First time I saw them in concert and only my third concert ever. First being Judas Priest, second was AC/DC and man as great as they were, especially in hindsight, Rush blew them away in every aspect of live performance. So longer story shortened, no other band EVER lived up to them…saw them another 15 times before the end and man they got better every time.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼🔥

One of the darkest Rush songs off a semi dark album. "Red Sector A" is a post-apocalyptic story reminiscent of the Holocaust. Rush was also one of the first rock bands to use a computerized light show. I mean, this is 1984 (oooo, Orwellian!) and yes, they were always great live!! ✌

(Speaking of The Twilight Zone: Rush has a song called Twilight Zone.) Now, about the lasers, Rush has for the most part, a great Laser show. Getting High when La Villa Stragiato starts playing, while the smoke rises from the stage and the smooth lasers go overhead makes you feel like you are floating in the sky. If you haven't reacted to La Villa Stragiato, I highly recommend it.
