Russel: I have watched your video about 20 times and finally was able to understand what you were trying to explain and then take it from my living room to the garage to the range to the course. I'm 76 with a 15 index. That in itself is amazing to me. Thanks for making this lesson available. It really helped me hit the ball better. I can set up and think about turning the ball with a bit of a hook. For me now it is how can I hit the ball straighter so that 3rd shot to the long par 4 is a bit shorter. Straighter by 20 yards is 20 yards closer to the green. Go figure. Simple idea with a clear explanation is what your lesson is all about. Good idea for us older guys. Thanks. Pops B.

Awesome, Russel, really awesome. This is by far the best explanation of this topic right shoulder I‘ve seen here. I personally struggle so much with this move - I think as many many other recreational golfers. Although standing over the ball thinking „only one thing: keep the right shoulder back“, then coming to impact and again the shoulder is passing the ball - it just makes me crazy. Your description is so clear and comprehensible. Thanks a lot.

I've recently made a concertive effort to drop my right shoulder in the downswing & not only have I virtually eliminated my slice but have increased my driving distance significantly with consistent results.

I have a tendency to chunk my irons and it makes sense now that it's all in my set up making my swing inconsistent. I'm going to practice dropping my right shoulder this year to see if it improves my ball striking. Thank you.

This video reinforces a drill I've even working on. Slow back on backswing then on downswing drop the right shoulder to hit through. Simple but it made a big improvement in my results.

This helps me get that right shoulder “down, under, and through”… As soon as your ball takes off, you should be watching it with a slightly sideways view(right side bend). You’ll kinda feel like your hitting through the shot with your right shoulder, if you’ve rotated properly. Don’t try to get the right shoulder down, and under by just sliding your hips forward. You’ll struggle with fats, and thins, and a high ball flight. The through part requires rotation. Watch Jauquen Niemann swing, and pause it through impact. You can see both butt cheeks, from his hips rotating out of the way. You can also see that amazing right side bend, as his right shoulder goes through. Not everyone has the flexible of him, or DJ, but we can all stand to do more of these things in our swing.

I just got out of a session with my coach, and this was the topic. My shoulders have been tremendously flat. What you happened to explain, that my coach did not, was the lateral hip movement facilitating an easier, more organic shoulder tilt. It makes too much sense after seeing this video. Looking forward to my next opportunity to try your drill. Thanks

This video was exactly what i needed... I tried this out last Saturday in 1st rd of club champs & it worked like a charm...but your drill is what was missing... + the move I made was right shoulder down towards right hip with no reference to rotation and left hip. btw.. net par for 1st rd of club champs... I'll practice this drill & maybe I'll get a good feel for exactly how much i need to do. Brilliant... I'll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks heaps Russell

The Orange Whip has been helpful to me in this context. Simply spread your hands 6 to 8 inches apart. Take full swing and release the trail hand at or just after impact point. Follow through with strong hip rotation (left side). Great drill to enforce and feel what RH is sharing.

Add to this drill "lead hand knuckles should be facing the ground on the down swing, this will get hands to the ball well before the club head".

Hi Russell, can you do a video on the right foot for RH golfer, specifically in the downswing? My heel is coming off the ground and wondering if this means that there is too much weight going towards my toes and not enough through balls of the foot laterally toward lead leg. Rgrds

7:45 - "Pre-delivery position" EXCELLENT! I practice this nearly everyday, AND lately I added keeping the wrists "uncocked", in a state of "ulnar deviation" at address and throughout the swing, BUT maintain or slightly increase trail "wrist extension." Mostly eliminating one of the two wrist axes. So I still get nice pressure on the back of shaft, with blending lateral side bend and rotation, but the accuracy increased significantly. If I need a little more zip, I add a little more wrist extension, and if I really need more zip I may re-introduce just a touch of "ulnar deviation." I found out that trying to time the release into "ulnar deviation" only became more complicated as my swing got better, and that confused me a little. Then I realized over the top swings don't have this complication because they release wrist cock (ulnar deviation) way at the top. So as my swing got better, my release was delayed and became more critical to get the timing right. So now I know, for consistent shot making, keep the wrists less cocked, and reserve it ONLY for when I really need it.

This was very well explained. I like the thought of anchoring my torso, although I know I'm not and letting the left arm cross in front of me. That make sense? Brings about a side bend naturally.

Really good video to explain the importance of dropping the rt. shoulder. But at 8:14- you say at this point we have to let the hands and arms do their thing and don't rotate at the bottom part of the downswing. I do not understand this. I thought that you advocated to keep turning the left hip back and up to catapult the club through. Please explain this important point you are making. Do we actually stop turning to let the golf club catch up. If that is the case can you go further to explain how to do this. because I believe that is where most of the speed is and I fail to take advantage of this. thanks

I believe Russell's explanation will show that the Arms and Hands will deliver a "Downward - Forward - Upward" motion, (think "V" shape from a Front View) After the Body Rotation has started and when the Rotation is approaching the midpoint. From Address, the Arms and Hands rise above the Trail Shoulder during the Backswing, Descend back to Impact and then Rise above the Lead Shoulder Post-Impact into the Follow Through. The Body Rotation doesn't "Stop" during the Dropping, nor are the Arms and Hands being "dragged through" by the Body Rotation. I plan to look for and view Russell's explanation.

Hi Russ, most of your stuff always seems to relate to avoiding coming over the top which is great but what if your issue is that you come to much from the inside? My coach and I are always working on trying to get the club head to come from the outside on the downswing. Thoughts? Thanks.

Maybe, I believe it’s the same movements. Some golfers pronate more (under-plane) others supinate (over the top) but the root cause is the same

Tilting motion where amateur shifts forward likely cause by grounding out the club in the swing. Means they're lower body isn't opening up and rotating and clearing the hips. So I think part of it's mental to do the above. I think there needs to be more drill in how to open/clear the hips in order to swing thru and keep the core stable with rotation without shift.

Confusing to me when you sway the pelvis to get the trail shoulder down, that the pelvis no longer points down over the right leg as you so often advocate is needed. So what is it? Pelvis pointing up when you sway in the downswing or pelvis pointing down. Help me out here please.
