They're not refugees. Avoiding military service does not make you a refugee. A refugee is someone fleeing a war in THEIR country. It ticks me off that these people call themselves refugees, when they are not. I don't like them, I don't agree with what they're doing, and I think all Russians should be forced to stay in Russia. No country should take them in. I'm am 100 percent on Ukraine's side, what Russia is doing is pure evil, Zelensky is AMAZING, but you'll notice that all these Russians who are fleeing Russia never had a problem with the war until it effected them personally. They are selfish. They think only of themselves. When the war didn't effect them, they didn't have a problem with it. They only care about it now that it effects them. They are not refugees. Other countries should not take them in and give them hand outs. If they had morals, they would stay in Russia, and revolt against Putin, and actually change things.

Not his fault. I understand he feels bad but honestly, as a "westerner" (former Eastern bloc) I feel guilty as well. When Russia annexed Crimea the west didn´t do much. And I felt so angry and anxious about it. That was a precedent that should not have happened. We are as guilty as Russia.

700k have left as of 2 days ago. If you draft 300k, then this is 1million people of economically productive age. There are approx 80million Russians between 24 and 65. This means that 1 in 80 potential workers have left so far!!!! And these are the brightest and best, so they are probably 1 in 10 of the best Russia has. That is 100s of billions in lost productivity for Russia. This might actually hurt the economy more than the sanctions!

I don't know if "proud" should be the word. I agree with them leaving, but what they're doing isn't exactly heroic. Heroic is if you go protest in public in Russia about how you don't agree with the war. In that case, you're going out of your way to try to save people. In this case, you simply flee because you don't want to die for an unjustified war. Self-preservation isn't heroic. This is not a protest, we fear for our lives and lives of close ones, and when our government (as it always does) changes the rules once again to legally give a death sentence to almost 2/3 of male population, it sure does spark that fear into fight or flight. Remember the first day? First hour of mobilisation - someone already booked an airplane ticket. It’s not about cowardliness, it’s about modern world which excludes wars as those are nonsense, but old people still think it’s that time, that it’s ok to bring it up, like it’s ok to even do wars. And for the past 20 years (and that’s a whole generation) we’ve been fed only lies so absurd, that reality itself was so far from it that it sounded absurd. In the 90 there still was freedom of speech, now it’s just a money farm for oligarchs, we can’t say anything bad about government out loud (or at least officially) can’t post it on the internet, all the people who tried to fix the government are either dead or in prison, any protest (even just a small group standing with signs and not even shouting anything) is considered aggressive, all the choices for us were rigged. For 20 years we, people, had no say in what and how our government does, the only thing we can is either hide somewhere deep in the country which is a bad idea or run away which can not be a afforded by everyone

It's a quite complex subject that brings mixed feelings as on one side you can understand not wanting to be drafted to go to war and how scary that might be but on the other hand, these people have stood by and gone on with their lives in Russia while Ukraine was being bombed out day and night. It's not until it could (conditional, not even definitive) affect them directly that they've decided to take some kind of action. Not sure this is to be seen as a refugee crisis. Note: the couple explaining their dilemma in designer clothes and in an apartment with a dining table the size of whole room bring little sympathy to the issue being discussed here.

Yes it is quite complex. We can't read the minds of those fleeing but we can only guess. Some are calling them heroes but are they really? They could be, yes. Deciding to stand up to poutine and not fight for his crazy beliefs. They could also be fleeing because they are afraid to die. We don't know if they are truly against Poutine or they just want to live. The russians who protested on Russian streets are to me admirable and heroes. My father was drafted by military police to Yugoslavia's civil war 3 times. We as a family suffered a lot since 90's. And yet, everywhere I go around the world they point a finger at me, full of hatred. Everyone, since forever, that I am the aggressor and murderer, even because civil war happened when i was born and i spent my childhood in poverty and hunger in shelters affected by constant NATO raids on the civilian targets in order to press the army to retreat. My country as well suffered much. I know many people who never wanted to be part of the war, and then their village got burned down and family tortured and slaughtered by yesterdays neighbours, that made them animals who have nothing to lose and went on revenge campain to do as much horrific things as they can to "the enemy civilians" so the other side would know the pain. War is horrific, should never be glorified, destroys life for decades in countries. I grew up the way I wish no other kid in the world grow up, no matter skin color, ethnicity, religion or belief. Americans are really spoiled nation, they find way to divide among themselves, being ungratefull for the world suffering in order to provide for their lifestyle and freedom, unaware that their government in order for them to do have that "freedom" is enslaving the rest of the world. To all good people of this world - PLEASE do not seek war. I survived not 1 but 3 wars. I've seen lies of ALL media, not western or eastern. And NEVER condemn the nation. People are more imprisoned in the rest of the world than you can EVER imagine.

I am Czech, I was following what was going on in Yugoslavia when it was happening, I felt horrified and I was angry that none of the transnational organizations did interfere... But as you say it was a civil war and it was difficult. Yes, Americans did interfere in the end, it was faulty, but what I felt back then was "too late". Not " too faulty" but too late.... Can you imagine that NATo and US would have stopped the madness earlier? It was a legit horror, whole villages being murdered... Yugoslavia had many major minority islands within the majority "states" and many old grievances... I understand you are a Serbian from what you write...

I was friends with the late Russian Writer Vladislav Tamarov who wrote "Afghanistan: Soviet Vietnam". He passed in December 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He used to stay with me many times in his travels in the U.S. in the mid 1990's. War changes a country in the soldiers who bear it forever in their Souls no matter whether you "win" or "lose". He was a troubled, haunted man scarred for life. Looks like his country never paid any attention to him and learned absolutely nothing. May he Rest-In-Peace. "He was holding his right leg, but the blood soaked through his fingers and flowed over his hand onto his sleeve. Intuition had served me again this time: my kick had knocked his automatic out of his grasp a fraction of a second before he could press the trigger. The second kick was to his face. It sent him flying about six feet. I set my sights on his head, but something stopped me, one of our guys let out a yelp behind me. Another bullet whistled by right next to me. Apparently, this Mujahadeen was not the only one here. Again, I aimed at his head, but something again stopped me. I saw how his hands were trembling. I noticed the horror in his eyes. “He is only a boy!” I thought and pressed the trigger.” - The late Vladislav Tamarov (1965-2014) "Afghanistan: Soviet Vietnam". Looks like Putin himself in his small withered Soul conveniently avoided military service in the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980's and, therefore, personally learned absolutely nothing about the devastating human spiritual costs of war. So it goes. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Nobody ever learning anything generation after generation.

Draft evaders See also: Draft evasion en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War_resisters_in_Canada Estimates vary greatly as to how many Americans immigrated to Canada for the specific reason of evading conscription, as opposed to desertion, or other reasons. Canadian immigration statistics show that 20,000 to 30,000 draft-eligible American men came to Canada as immigrants during the Vietnam era. The BBC stated that "as many as 60,000 young American men dodged the draft."[25] Estimates of the total number of American citizens who moved to Canada due to their opposition to the war range from 50,000 to 125,000[26] This exodus was "the largest politically motivated migration from the United States since the United Empire Loyalists moved north to oppose the American Revolution."[2 So, just take the numbers "facts" and multiply it by 2, so as to not make the Russia draft dodgers look so bad.. 125,000 in 9 years compared to 350,000 "some estimates are as high as 650,000" in 1 month=same thing gtfoh

Less about the selfless nature of management and more about the preservation of the business, itself, but i'm sure its a mix at the end of the day. Mobilization is going to cripple their economy internally in this respect as countries impose external pressures, too.

@@redrick8900 No, that would because Australian forces were siphoned off by Britain to for it's failed defense of Singapore. Large numbers of Australian soldiers were captured there and interned in Japanese POW camps and died on the Burma railway. Then too, Australian troops were sent off by the British to fight in North Africa. Some highly for the 'benefits' of the British Empire. It is one of the reasons there was so much discussion in Australia after the Queen's death whether it was time to become a Republic and another why Australia was never going to be Britain's 'white knight' after Brexit. There is actually quite a lot of Anti-British sentiment in Australia. To an outsider, as I suspect you are from your post, it might look like Australia waited for the US to protect it during WW2 and it is true that US support was invaluable, but from an Australian perspective it had been abandoned to its fate by Britain. Also remember that the population at the time was only 7 million, around half of whom were of Irish descent and therefore not inclined to be sentimental over links to Britain, and it was resource rich.

In 2007 they organized a riot in the capital - looting shops, flying russian flags and calling for putin to invade because - as they were shouting - "everything is ours", i.e belongs to russia. It's near impossible to cahnge their imperialistic mindset.

I recall as well that during mobilization for the first Gulf War there were numerous active military and reservists who “came out” against the military action and refused to honor their oath to serve. These deserters of sorts expected bouquets for their anti-war stance but the court of public opinion judged them to be self-serving frauds who just wanted all the benefits gained from service without having to pony up when things got hot. In the end Leavenworth and a dishonorable discharge were all that was gained in defiance of a short, popular war.
