ive tied over the years prob 100 of these,being a classic salmon flytyer myself ive read that the floss strand for the underwing which is a mystery to alot of people is there because the inventor of the fly,, JC Arseneault would catch so many salmon on this pattern that the floss would start to unwind from teeth cutting into it and supposedly made the fly even more attractive to the fish so it became part of the dressing..ive tried many times to do floss bodies with a bobbin and for a fishing fly its fine but on an exhibition fly is gets too unruly and unwound..when wrapping with your hands instead that problem is eliminated..im sure you mite know all this but maybe not..lovely job you did tying it also..

Are you certain that's a red fox hide? It looks very much like a grey fox hide and I believe red fox guard hair tips are light in color where as grey fox are black.

Would squirrel tail work for the over wing as a substitute?
@mattgrobert37738 жыл бұрын
You could use squirrel, but it won't give you that nice wing fox does, not that the salmon would mind - the traditionalists, they might have a stroke though. : )

Matthew Grobert thanks. I really want to acoid using fox whenever I can since they're my favorite animal. I know it's weird but the thought makes me feel awkward.

Woodchuck has nice contrasting markings on the guard hairs that may be a suitable substitute.

Tim I saw you today at the fly fishing show. You said you needed ideas... how about a good coffin fly? Got any good patterns?
@tightlinevideo8 жыл бұрын
Heck of idea Nick! I don't have a good pattern for one but will keep looking. Hopefully I can find something and put together a video prior to summer when they're about. Thanks for the idea!
