Rutger brings such a calm reasonableness and sense of community with his vision. Like the BBC podcast "People Fixing the World," you get a sense of hope and doability by hearing of what others are doing at the grassroots level, and how the ideas spread, and how what you might hear in the media is not necessarily accurate. I loved "Humankind: A Hopeful History" too. Thank you, Rutger!

Medical for all too, sure would at the very least make humans feel like the world is more humane! This would help with those who can't work or have problems that can't be fixed! It might help put a dint in homelessness!

@@ThomiX0.0 who watches TV in 2019? stopped that long ago. watch videos like these on KZbin or actually talk to people from other countries on Xbox live is giving much more in return than TV or news.

@@GolDRoger-kn5kw that's right, it takes some time to find the valuable sources but makes you more aware of the unclean streams which are there too. It's like, watching a movie without the sound, taking just a little distance from the whish of so called informers of the meanstream, who nearly all have a corporate intention. Outside 'the box' is more room..:-)

If you eradicated Poverty you'd get rid of intense stress on humans and would give people hope for their future; along with that you'd get rid of all sorts of problems in crimes done in desperation. Like he says this would be a game changer and safe money!

Great talk, thanks for sharing it! I’m also so glad he mentioned that the way we treat animals is one of the most terribly unjust things we do. Living vegan can change that, and I’m very much in favour of building a society based on the utopian vision Mr. Bregman has. www.GentleRevolution.nz/v

~35:39 We don't need to introduce UBI by stoking conflict between classes. We should respect property rights more, not less. Make industries pay when they take natural resources or pollute the air and water. Make them pay more when random polls show that most people want to see less of this or that kind of impact. We will then embody in practice the basic precept that claims a right of the people to set limits to humans' impacts on the environment. Proceeds from environmental impact fees (a monetary representation of the value of air and water to the human economy and society) should be shared to all people, to each an equal amount. Money transfers from those who use more natural resources to the people at large. We are psychologically inclined to think that we are not causing more problems or harm than most people. We will want to identify ourselves as members of the less-polluting class. So we will not be inclined to see the UBI policy as slanted against ourselves. The policy will benefit the environment and promote sustainability without triggering a psychological response from a targeted class. Among those who see that they are bearing the brunt of the price increases that result from environmental impact fees, some may welcome the more honest price signal as a necessary tool for educating consumers. In what way is UBI introducing conflict when it is actually a solution for class conflict. The rest of your comment is great and I am happy for you sharing, however I am not exactly sure what your point is regarding this topic.

The proposed funding mechanism is explicitly a 'tax-the-rich' proposal. Fund it by taxing polluting industries and those that deplete resources or otherwise degrade the environment, to avoid this class antagonism, and to get the benefits of a more-honest economic system.@@clarkbowler157

UBI is a lazy choice. A federal job guarantee is a responsible alternative.

I'm against UBI when there's literally so much to take care of and find funds for! Such as combating climate change with a massive green stimulus, universal single payer health and pharma coverage, housing, universal job guarantee, universal good quality education free at all levels, etc. UBI doesn't make sense when all of these issues are put on one table!

It still makes sense and would help humanity and get people options, why would you be against it unless you are afraid of being taxed?

The problem is that poverty costs us more. It's the reason for high crime rate, lack of education, poor heath and unemployment. Automation and AI plugged into upgraded digitalised renewable energy source would boost economy enormously by it's efficiency at near zero marginal cost as last time I heard Sun doesn't charge anyone. Whichever country upgrades quickest will be the leading economy. That comes with eventually loss of jobs, a plenty of them, more than was assumed in first industrial revolution and so we can't invent new jobs at this rate. And products need consumers who can afford to buy them. Here's the fact: automation is so much more efficient than human that even with heavy taxation on it the industry still wins, with the same tax we can cover the cost of UBI + the money we will save on dramatic drops in crime, prisons, healthcare costs and other unsuccessful programs for poor. Eradication of poverty is not only socially but even financially beneficial. Now some are obviously most worried that people will end up sitting home and watching Netflix all days, but I think this Bregman is trying to say that all evidence suggests that's not the case and people are intrinsically motivated to contribute to society. I personally think that there will be eventually a lot of human jobs invented. Except, they will be much more meaningful and fulfilling than the job options now.
